Josh's Captain America: TFA Costume

I kept saying I wasn't going to do this, but I'm a terrible liar. :D

Hey everyone,

I'm back and now I'm working on a replica costume for Captain America: The First Avenger costume. This is the first time I've ventured in costume making or any type of cosplay. So let's get started shall we?

Here's what I'm looking to make essentially:

You've all seen this costume before, this isn't anything new. I'm having a bit of trouble getting started.

Base Costume

There aren't a lot of options as of late to make this costume. I've seen tons of builds using the Hello Cosplay costume as a base.

However, this costume is no longer available.I emailed Hello Cosplay about this costume and they are willing to make it for me but at a higher price, which is a bit unnerving.

My other option is to go with a costume from Cosplay House.

Admittedly, this costume doesn't look too bad! I've emailed them as well and asked if they could make it with a white undershirt, and thankfully they said it would be no problem at all. Has anyone ever used this costume instead of the one from Hello Cosplay? How's the quality?

Helmet

Thankfully, I'm having this made by a fellow RPF member roblenzz. Go check out his work if you're interested in a quality helmet from an awesome individual. http://www.therpf.com/f13/captain-america-tfa-completed-helmets-162311/

Shield

messageparts.jpg

I made a shield about a year or so ago. With help from Valor, Chris Fields, and several others on the forums. Go check out the thread here if you're interested in my build! http://www.therpf.com/f9/joshs-captain-america-shield-132398/

Also, the star and brackets on my shield were provided by Valor. If you're looking to build a shield, I would HIGHLY recommend a pair of brackets and a star from Valor. He does quality work, is very helpful, and a very nice guy. http://www.therpf.com/f13/captain-america-shield-brackets-handles-193097/

Boots

I'm having a bit of trouble finding a good pair of boots to use. I was either going to go with one of these:

Amazon.com: Corcoran Men's 10 Inch Historic Jump Work Boot: Shoes

or this

Captain America Movie Cosplay Boots Mens Size US9 27cm | eBay

I'm leaning towards the latter.

Gloves

Here's where I'm REALLY having trouble. I cannot for the life of me find anyone who can make gloves that are similar to the ones used in the movies. I don't want to pay $200 for the UD replica gloves. I know the base costume from Cosplay House comes with gloves, but I don't know how good they are. I've tried looking on Etsy.com as well for someone who's willing to do commission work, but I haven't had any luck. Any help here would be great.

Chest Star

I'm fortunate enough to have Bamabat make a star for the chest. I can't wait to get it!

Belt + Pouches

I'm having this made by a leatherworker on Etsy.com. Hopefully it'll turn out really well. I may forego the belt and pouches if the cost is too high and the base costume one is done well enough.

That's all I got for now! If there any suggestions, I'm more than willing to take them!

Personally, I love to see a new Cap TFA build. There are so many awesome, quality threads on here with a million different nuances. I am just finishing mine up for Halloween. I have seen the above suit (Cosplay House) in person, and honestly, I wasn't impressed at all. To make it into a decent costume would require some major overhaul. I don't know how much time or loot you're looking to spend but Magnoli makes a really nice suit...
Super Soldier Uniform
And of course there's the UD Replicas motorcycle suit (my choice), which you can actually still get complete or in pieces here...
Secret Compass online - Collectibles, Tech, Gear
They just reworked their site so you may have to hunt around for the Cap stuff or contact them directly.
For boots, this is what I went with...
Combat Service Boots
I just polished them to a color I liked, added some weathering, leather conditioner, etc.
And remember, if you get stumped, just look for help or inspiration right here. There are SOOOOOO many great tutorials (Fly4v's was the most helpful to me)
Also, if you're putting together a belt, there is a run of fully functional TFA belt buckles on sale right now in the Junkyard.
Good luck and keep us all posted!

I like the Hello Cosplay suit and I can get it from them, but the back of the suit is wrong. That's the ONLY thing that bugs me. I guess I'd have to modify it but honestly, I don't know how or what material to use. Magnoli's suit is REALLY REALLY GOOD, but I can't spend that much on a costume (heading to grad school next year). The Cosplay House suit looks okay but I'm not sure on their quality. I've heard they're very late on shipments as well. And sadly the UD replica suit is too much for me as well :(.

Right now it's boiling down to the Hello Cosplay suit or the Cosplay House suit.

For the boots the first pair actually looks closer to the TFA boots than the second pair. The latter looks more appropriate for the comic Cap costume, they kinda look like pirate boots. If you add a piece of leather to wrap around the top of the first pair of boots, you can make it look pretty similar.

For the base suit, look up CaptainSuperman's TFA thread. He took one of the cosplay store's suits and modified it to look pretty good.

I don't know if it's the same thread third3eye is talking about but now that I think about it, there was a build someone did where they actually had Hello Cosplay modify the back of the suit to make it more accurate. As I recall it wasn't perfect but it was a lot better. If you dig around I'm sure you'll find it.
And I forgot to mention in my last post, the shield looks badass and great choice for a helmet. Rob really is a stand up guy and makes an affordable, quality Cap lid.

Josh,

That is a great looking shield.
For the boots, the jump boots (your first selection) with the top cuff from a WW2 two buckle boot will be spot on. If you keep the cuff seperate you can reuse the same boots for the TFA rescue.

Have you considered using a fisher stripe worksuit for a base to make your own suit?
Also there are some good motorcycle gloves out there that you can mod into TFA gloves. Graphic Jordan did a really great job on the gloves.

Yeah that's what I think too. But the second pair are cheaper. I actually found some similar Dr. Martens lace up shoes that might work just as well.

I did see CaptainSuperman's TFA thread and his 1:1 suit and it looks fantastic. I didn't see any of the pictures of the back though. From what I remember the base suit from Hello Cosplay has the wrong back. I've contacted them about making changes to the back and they had no idea what I was talking about. So it makes me kinda nervous that they've done it before and don't remember.

I did find that thread but for some reason Hello Cosplay didn't have any idea what I was talking about when I asked them to change the back. And thanks for the compliment! I'm very excited to get Rob's helmet.

Thanks Fly! I think I'm going to go with jump boots, but maybe not those.

Funny you mentioned making my own suit. I just got off the phone with a custom costume maker in my area. She's done a killer Loki cosplay before and said that Captain America shouldn't be a problem. So I may actually go to her for the base suit. Is the fisher stripe worksuit commonly used to make the suit from scratch?

Those are going to be some nice looking gloves.

SGmorton first came up with the worksuit idea but in the end he color removed the fabric to get the off white sleeves since he was able to find the fabric and made a scratch suit.
I used a work suit and painters pants. Color removed both, at the same time, to make the suit light blue after cutting it up and re-building both.

There should be a third worksuit conversion popping up soon... or should I say fourth if you join the party.

Can you provide a link to his work? I'm not quite sure I understand how he did it or how to color remove?

Use rite aide color remover. It is available on Amazon.

Here are some links that may help but the search engine can add even more.

My TFA build starts on page 10, among other Cap stuff

But all the Caps here are really helpful at getting things together.

So here's a bit of an update for everyone. I was able to find a cosplay guy in Pittsburgh who said he would help me with my Captain America suit. So having said that, I went I ordered the Hello Cosplay suit. I'm going to hopefully work with him and change everything on the back to fit the movie style. Hopefully the suit won't take too long to get here!

I haven't picked out a pair of boots yet but the ones that were linked have been really helpful!

I've also hit a snag with the pouches and the belt. I can't seem to find the right kind or even have someone make me one that's similar. :(

On a higher note the gloves came in and they look REALLY GOOD.

Also I forgot to post here, but the star from Bamabat came in as well. And much to his reputation, it looks and feels great!

You won't find anything accurate off the shelf, but you might get lucky and find something close. Boogie is right though, there are several members who can do the custom work :)

Boogie, can you go into detail how you polished/changed the color of the boots? I have no idea how to do that.
