JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

At one time, Trek changed the audience.
It wasn't for everyone, but it grew.
It asked that people think a little more.
So ratings were not great for the original series, it took time for it to find it's audience later in syndication.

Now the audience has changed Trek.

Sad and true. The only way it could have been better is if Vin Diesel had been Kirk and the transporter guy was the bad guy.

You feel me , Yeah , That's a go I think. HOLLYWOOD here I come.

Now the audience has changed Trek.

Well, economic realities have changed Trek.

A film this expensive needs to attract an international audience, which is something the Trek franchise has never been able to do with much success.

As I've said before, I believe it's possible for Trek to cast a wider net audience-wise without alienating the loyal TOS fan base. Whether XI accomplishes this remains to be seen, but based on what I've seen I'm cautiously optimistic.

So...you say Trek popularity has been on a downward spiral and needs a reboot. Let's see if we can discover why.

First there was Star Trek. Not hugely popular while on network but undeniably became a cultural icon and has been a cash cow for Paramount.

Next came TNG. Changed the ship, changed the crew. But general vibe was there. Was successful but not as huge as TOS. Good show, but got a little long on technobabble.

Next DS9. Changed nearly the whole concept. Station not a ship, crew that hate each other and don't get along very well. Still a pretty good show overall but again NOT as popular at TNG. And let's not forget that the idea was stolen from the creator of Babylon 5.

Next up Voyager. Change even more. Woman Captain. Super ugly ship (IMHO). Gilligan's Island premise. And exteme pandering to the fanboys with 7 of 9. Still even less popular, can barely stay on the air through it's run.

And lastly. Enterprise. A ship and technology that looks more advanced than TOS. Gets canceled twice, then when it really starts go the right way, too late, it gets dumped.

So what have we learned.

The farther from TOS it got the worse the shows got. It's not rocket science.

How can adding yet a different ship, ignoring canon and giving it a iPod/Michael Bay vibe POSSIBLY help? Heck, I even like Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the Transformers.

It is simply impossible to pull in new fans of this franchise in the numbers that already exist in the original fan base. There are too many other things that distract folks.

I've been a Trek fan since I was 5 (I'm 47). I watched the show ON network. I was a member of the letter writing campaign that kept the show on the air and got the space shuttle named Enterprise.

Abrams states he's not really a very big fan. Sorry. I'm more qualified to judge what is and isn't Star Trek.

I'll certainly wait until I've seen it to pass final judgement but it's not looking good.

Okay, I keep hearing this is a reboot. That is fine however why keep ANYTHING from TOS? Why use the same style costumes? The same style ship? It looks like if it were going to be a reboot that Nimoy should not be in it and just have the new actors and go from there.

just for fun here is my idea of some "reboot" movie concepts:

We all know about Henry Ford right, then why not "reimagine" what he could have built as his first car? Start the movie with him in his garage tinkering away and then he makes this:

Then of course we can do a movie about the Mayflower but we can "reimagine" what it REALLY looked like:

motor-yacht-jo-cruifaefeaefaedfadsfasddfesing6.jpg

and finally how about a movie about the Enola Gay? Thing is if they had better technolgy back then they could have used this so just put this in there:

Oh well, I personally do not like the new ship but what the heck, if someone else does I am happy for them :) I do not understand why the wheel needed to be reinvented. Update the details of the ship for the movie and that is all but I guess I am in the miniority.

I would say most of the people on this board have similar experiences when it comes to Star Trek. I'm sure were all just as qualified to say what is and isn't Star Trek.

TNG and DS9 were lame. To preachy and goodie-two-shoes! Enterprise was the best one after TOS. It had action, sex and aliens... which is what we all want anyway! :lol So the farthest from the original was one of the best in my opinion.

rileyreplicas. all the things you mentione happened in real life! TOS was science fiction!

OK first glimpse of the landing party "exploration set"... heh...

Looks like we've got HOLSTERS attached to a belt around the waist... reminiscent of the Gold Key Comics equipment! The phaser holster can be seen banging against Quinto's leg as he runs. The holster on his left hip seems too big for the box he has in his hand... dunno if the box is a communicator or something else. I'm guessing communicator from the way he holds it, and starts to raise it as the shot cuts away.

What's with the Imperial Officer from Star Wars at far left? :lol

The awesome expanse of the main viewscreen. That helm console is about the size of a football field. Note Sulu's big handle grip at far left. That must be the eject switch.

043cj1.jpg

Corridors aboard the NSEA Protector. ENTERPRISE! I meant Enterprise. Well maybe it's the Enterprise. I'm guessing NOT the Romulan ship.

Note the graphics at far left. Also, I would hate to be the guy who has to change the light bulbs on this ship.

Protector about to jump to warp. ENTERPRISE! Darn, why do I always do that.

Sulu buckling some swash.

Try saying "dropsuit Sulu" three times fast.

Scotty's cold weather gear.

It's those baton-twirling Klingo-Romulan whatzits with Nero.

Chris Pine with some sort of Han Solo pistol. Excellent open-mouthed "I'll see you in hell!" Shatner expression BTW.

If this were a TNG movie, I'd say this was an alien ship flying out of an anomaly of the temporal variety. Probably intending to alter the past. IF this were a TNG movie that is.

Monsters of rock? What is this, Star Trek V?

And what the hell is this thing. Probably Spaceman Spiff.

Got a few of the Vulcan outfits. Perhaps the pointed sideburns are now a VULCAN style, and not a Starfleet style..? Hard to be sure but it doesn't look like everybody has the burns this time.

Spock beams down carrying some sort of object... really hard to tell what it could be. A stone, a bag... an old timey radio?

Once he materializes you get a nice view of his tunic and badge.

No, more like warp drive science. ;)

I'm 47 years old as well, and I've been a Star Trek fan since TOS originally aired in 1966. I found Next Generation tolerable, but disliked more episodes than I liked. I never liked Deep Space Nine or Voyager, but I am one of the few who enjoyed Enterprise (though I found the Xindi story arc drawn out and tedious), so take that for what it's worth.

As I understand it, this film is not supposed to be strictly in keeping with the canon of the original series, so I'm trying to keep an open mind. But, so far, I haven't been particularly impressed with anything I've seen. On the plus side, it couldn't possibly be as bad as Nemesis...could it? :confused

So who will be the first to tackle the police mask/helmet? It doesn't scream Trek to me, but it looks cool otherwise. I don't know why but it feels THX 1138 to me?

That bridge set is beyond gay. It looks decorative, fragile, and in no way functional. I assume all those glass displays and panels and decorative accents immediately shatter at the first bump? It looks like the spa at a W hotel.

Ok, I'm probably gonna get lynched for saying this, but noooooo way. As I've mentioned before, I don't walk around with a Trek uniform shirt on all the time but I did grow up with TOS... and I always watched it whenever it was on tv no matter how many times I saw it. At one point I knew most eps by heart.

At the time it WAS ground breaking, and it will always have a special place in my scifi-heart, but so much of it has aged very poorly. The set and ship designs, the sometimes insanely crazy/improbable plots, the music that sometimes seems to parody itself... the horrible, horrible diffused lighting whenever Kirk dramatically grabs a nearby Yeoman to kiss dramatically.

(The movies on the other hand, hold up a lot better... but I was always under the impression that TNG gained a much larger following than TOS?)

What diminished the popularity of Trek wasn't the differences to TOS... they in fact kept it going as long as it did. For the better part of the 90's there was always at least one, sometimes two Trek shows on tv and as much as they tried to keep it new and fresh, the stories were getting rehashed and people got tired of hearing about Trek, Starfleet, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Phase Inverters, Warp Speed and so on. It just became so familiar that it lost it's excitement for lots of people. (Though I myself loved and watched Enterprise until the end... thought it was a real interesting take on Trek besides the godawful Michael Boltonesque theme.)

A saying I often use when writing/designing, "The more you know about something, the less interesting it becomes.", holds pretty true here I think.

Now, I do acknowledge that there is a very real risk that Abrams has hippified Trek too much with this film. Stuart Baird was not a fan and he completely massacred Nemesis. But on the other hand Ron Moore succeeded immensely with Galactica, bringing it up to modern standards, still managing to respect the heritage of the original.

For me it has a McQuarrie "Fett sketch" vibe to it. I'm just glad the number on the police helmet wasn't "995" - I've had my fill of homage/references in sci-fi movies.

The shuttles look like the Space:1999 Eagle and a V minseries troop transport had a baby.

Maybe they are made of transparent aluminum?

I don't think the shuttles are too bad, the cockpit windows make me think of a workbee on steroids. :)
