JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

I personally love the simple elegance of the original: by far my favorite starship. This one is just ugly IMO. I also hate the fact that it's built on earth and not in orbit (which I believe is part of GR's original concept, why change that? It's so stupid). What's that about? I'm sure that anything I say has been already echoed in this ever increasing massive thread. Anyway, I am looking forward to the movie and I hope it's good but screwing with the Enterprise and making it so ugly is disturbing.

Koerners model is spot on totally acceptable...

I'm sorry, but Gabe's ship looks like it was assimilated by the Borg :lol

The new ship is different, but equally ugly. I fully expected the ship
to be rethought for this movie, and I was open to it. But it's just awful,
a mishmash of parts that don't go together.

What if, at the end of the movie, they will show us THE Enterprise we know, while this is the Enterprise of the rest of the movie... Would you like that?:)
(A sort of refit-before-the-refit...)

Good point Ramiel--this is Pike's ship after all. It should look different by the time Kirk is Captain. Y'know--they've got to lose all those cheesy gooseneck viewers!! ;)

Yes. That would be fine. Only if there is some explanation as to why it looks post TMP when it should be Cage era.

maybe they will follow Trek lore and we'll see the captain (Pike) sacrifice his ship to save mankind/earth, and we'll get a bit more background on where Kirk gets his ideas from ?

Right... Well, if it ends with a ship too damaged to "simple repairs", and they simply, after the "refit", show us the old big E (refubished "cinema-style":cool), I think we won't need an explanation I suppose...:D

But I'm just speculating to the nth degree here!:lol

(What's that about?

What it’s about is the filmmakers taking a bit of artistic license canon-wise so as to create one of those stirring hero-comes-face-to-face-with-his-destiny moments movies about Leaving Home are so fond of.

In this case, it’s an homage to The Right Stuff.

Remember the beat in which Yeager rides out of the desert on horseback and suddenly comes face-to-face with a flame-belching X-1? Same basic concept in XI, with Kirk discovering the under-construction Enterprise while riding through an epic expanse of golden cornfields.

Now, I fully understand why fans might gag at the idea of their beloved starship having been built in a ****ing Iowa cornfield, but taken in context, and on its own merits, it’s actually a nice bit o’ foreshadowing; Trek XI’s version of Luke gazing out at the twin suns (there’s A LOT of Luke in Kirk’s farm boy backstory).

The great thing about all this reviewing of disappointing things in this thread is that by the time I see the movie I will be so devoid of hope or expectation I might just manage to enjoy it. :lol

More than likely it's raping, a la Galactica. Un-imaginative people who can't sell a concept of their own. So they steal the name of another property and call it a re-boot.

Face the facts: '70s Galactica is only good if you have nostalgic feelings for it... or if you like campy crap. But this is 'bout Trek. :)

Pathetic.

Living in the past? Indeed. :) But saying that... you defend the PT, huh?

But then Paramount seems to have made it their mission to do the most harm to their most valuable property at every turn.

Are you referring to Indy or The Godfather franchise here...? :p

In regards to the new Enterprise, I always thought that the Enterprise was a lame design. Yeah, I said it. :rolleyes ;) I like TOS -- is that what you kids call it? :) -- but I can't sit through anything else that has the Trek name attached. Besides Wrath of Khan, that is. I liked that a lot. But I don't watch TOS or Khan 'cos I want to look at the Enterprise... I watch it for the great characters and story (definitely not the hammy Shatner, as cool as he was in TOS :lol). And who knows, this new show might be give us that. The other flicks certainly haven't.

People always say to me, "What if they, like, remade JAWS?" :unsure Really, three ****ty sequels is no different than a remake. (And frankly, I think it would be totally cool to see a mini-series that is faithful to the book.) And I know I wouldn't ***** about a new ORCA (face it, the ORCA is cooler than the Enterprise :cool). Now, what if they remade STAR WARS? Meh, no biggie. I can still watch Mark Hamill and company in the original†. And I'd still give the new stuff a chance to entertain me.

What does this have to do with this thread? Let it go... at least watch it before you make a decision.

†Let's leave it at that, huh? :p

Once again, I am honored that another member feels my opinion is of such importance that is requires a point by point rebuff. Never realized I could be so influential.

It's just an opinion.

Since you jump in to every BSG thread [or PT bashing thread], I thought I would do it to you. ;)
