JC's Space Marine!

Yeah that was really my next thought after my jdfhbglaisudv;l at the dog subsided, but it's been almost a week and he hasn't shown any signs, so were assuming he didn't. He just loves to take things apart, does the same with his stuffed animals, tears them to pieces and piles their carcasses outside his lair.

Yeah I'm not totally sure yet about the damage, a lot of it does look cool, but I think I'll have to wait till I start detailing and see how much I can cover up or fill in.

Hey guys, probably last post this weekend, wanted to show my progress for this saturday.
Good news! I'm pretty much back to where I was before the dog happened, albeit I have one more piece plus some slightly damaged pieces.

Here's what I built last night.

Did the cutting work this morning!

and here is where I am now!

Pelvis is prettttttttty rough at the moment, I think it will hold a better shape when I build the inner piping.

So yeah my next steps are to build the inner structure for the other leg and pelvis, then get busy on the belt, which will probably be fun, albeit time consuming. :thumbsup

Hey Amish,

No I am not using harbor freight mats. I attempted to use them to make some stuff previously and they were super dense and hard to work with, in part due to my inexperience probably. Plus it seems like it would difficult to make large pieces like I am spanning across so many mats.

This is the exact product I am using, (1/2" mostly) the store in Burbank is like a 40 minute drive from my house so I cruised up there to check out the foam and the guys were super informative and helpful, totally worth the extra couple bucks a sheet over this: https://www.foambymail.com/MC2-/cross-linked-polyethylene-foam-2lb.html, which is the same as far as I know, but I wouldn't quote me on that until you've held it in your hands and compared.

Those two foams are essentially identical, the finish on the faces might be slightly different depending on the rollers they come off of, but otherwise interchangeable. I currently use the exact stuff you linked to from foambymail (that's where I order mine from). It is not nearly as dense as the harbor freight mats, but works (and cuts) very well. The full sheet rolls are a decent size, and they also don't have the shape-memory that make the Sears BestStep mats a hassle to get flat after you unroll them.

Just mt two cents, but you definitely want to go with 1/2" (at the least) for a Spacemarine's major pieces, it won't collapse nearly as easily under its own weight as the 1/4".

Appreciate the link. Man that's a big price difference for there largest size which is 72x48 is $35 vs the HF mats which are 50x50 on sale for $6.99. Maybe I should look at the HF stuff for legs possibly arms and for the chest, helmet etc use what you linked. I have a heat gun to make the foam more bendable.

Hey guys,
Had some spare time today and picked up my piping and fittings so that I can pretty much exactly copy Sylgian's stilt build. Unfortunately, mine might have to be a bit taller, so I'll be doing some experimenting with stability once I've got them fixed to the wood base this week. Anyways, here is what I've got so far, not too much, but it's a start.

If you don't like the PVC set up I have seen a lot of people going Henriq' s route with the stacked up foam "discs" keep on trucking :thumbsup

Thanks! Yeah, I've been taking inspiration from Heinrik as well, his foam stack stilts are my backup. Hopefully I'll have time tonight to cut some wood and give these things a real test. Progress report incoming this evening if all goes well.

I was considering using my ice hockey boots minus the blade of coarse to strap onto my stilt base but I think the weight would suck so I'm considering some cheap Velcro shoes from Goodwill. I get my foam next month. Figured when the kids go to see their mom I'll have the time to jump on this so I'm grabbing techniques and ideas from everyone. Look forward to more of your updates.

Hey erebodies,

Spent a couple hours finishing off the stilts today! Pretty excited about how the came out, but I'm going to need to do some serious work on securing them to my feet before they feel ok while walking.haven't attached them inside the boots yet, they're just chilling right now.
Added an inner frame to the pelvis as well, but still need some work to make it wearable. Webbing and buckles arrive on wednesday, so I'll be doing some serious wearability tests then, and should have the inner skeleton secure on both legs, so that the thigh can hang from the pelvis, and the shin can be clipped into the thigh piece. Gotta get that rigging figured out.

Hey guys,

Here's where I am with the costume as it stands.

Got the inner structure done for the whole bottom half, and let me tell you, the rigging and making the suit wearable makes cutting foam look like a piece of cake. It took me several tries, but now I've got some rigging on the pelvis, and the shin and thighs connected by joints. Will continue walking tests until I feel good about the longevity of wearing it, then will continue on to the belt and chest pieces. The hardest part is keeping the shins facing forward and not twisting, so I constructed a joint similar to Sylgians out of some pipe and will be testing that tonight.

You are blowing through this build. I know some guys used flat bar bolted to the shin and thigh. That might help with the twisting. I noticed when I created my strapping for my TK I had it criss cross and that helped with the cod/buttplate from spinning since they basically fought against each other

Thanks for the great ideas Amish. After my pipe joint turned out t be kind of half-*** and flimsy i decided to adopt Henrik Pilerud's method, which as far as I'm concerned, involves a mending plate attached to the shin, used in conjunction with a pin affixed to the thigh piece to create a strong joint. I think by shortening my stilts a bit, along with creating some better joints like the ones pictured below, I can improve the wearability issues I'm struggling with. More updates to come this weekend as I implement some of these solutions. Although to be honest I'm really looking forward to moving on with the foam work :p

Hey all,

Spent a good few hours working on this project today, shortened the stilts a bit. Been looking at a lot of Henrik's pictures and I am super impressed with how easily he can walk! It looks very effortless, whereas my current rig seems pretty floppy and my shins seem to bounce around a lot... The way I have the thing rigged now, the thighs hang from the cod, and the shins hang from the thighs, with the improved knee joint I constructed, but the seem to bounce around a lot, and my stilts don't feel very stable, which is in part due to the shoes I'm using, but I also want to connect the boot/stilt to the shin i think... Lot more work to do to get my walk down, but in the mean time, I did the belt! Looks pretty cool!

Hey guys!

No new pics today, but I've working hard on getting the shin to sit right over the boot without too much waggling, which I think is what is causing some of my walking problems. Other cool stuff, I got my Glospex today! Checking out some more Death Company art for detailing inspiration until I get some more foam to start on the chest. This one is my favorite:

Hmmm maybe adding industrial velcro to the boot and inside shin may help keep it in place. I dig the Deathcompany, cool. I definitely decided on the Templars but I think I may do a Deathwatch version.

Yup, Industrial velcro would do it. If you use some, you'll want to glue the velcro on even if it has an adhesive backing; otherwise the stuff will pull away from the foam, the grip is that good.
