Jayne Cobb's "Vera" from Firefly (3D printed parts - Image Heavy)

... I should state that the FS thread will go up once I've determined a price for my kits, since a price is required for posting a FS thread.

I will have kit pricing once I've printed my first full kit to determine machine time used and material used to calculate costs and a reasonable selling price.

This should happen within a week or so, as I'm currently printing my 2nd tray of parts. (For reference, just the Showtime kit requires 3 trays of parts... the full kit will require many more trays of parts... the magazines alone are HUGE). That, and remember that trays take 3 to 10 hours to print... each.

I'll keep everyone posted with updates... and maybe even some photos. Stay tuned. :)

I love finding a thread with a gathering of Browncoats!

I've been watching the 3D printers evolve. They're like digital photography; the first digital cameras were pretty awful - and awfully expensive! Now they're dirt cheap. I can foresee 3D printers getting the same way :).

Amazing work! Geez. I have Boo parts coming from Sidewinder for my Denix; I really should get in on this (or on a second run/standby list). Once you cost it out, I'll know if I can swing it. :)

I'd like to share an update on my progress.

I've successfully assembled all the files into trays of nested parts.

The printed parts needed to convert from "Showtime" to "Vera" took up space enough to require three trays... and these three trays took a total of ~20 hours to print.

In addition to the three trays detailed above, an additional nine trays of nested parts are required for a complete "Vera kit"... for a total of twelve trays.

That's right... it will take twelve trays of nested parts printed on a MakerBot Replicator to build a "Vera"... and just three of the trays took 20 hours to print. :)

Next week, I'll begin compiling and printing the remaining nine trays of parts.
I'll throw up some photos sometime, too... watch for those.

I have nothing to announce on pricing (and I'll save any pricing details for my FS thread, per forum rules). I just wanted to share my progress on printing a single complete kit of printed parts.

*Also, I'm only printing these parts in "slate gray" for simplicity... and since everything is printing mixed together in trays of nested parts, I chose a basic color that works well for raw parts requiring cleanup and paint. :)

Not that I HAVE any parts for it, but are there any real world Vera bits you might wanna scan in order to get a better product?
You mentioned being least proud of the sights. Is there anyone here that could laser scan actual sights for you, or something?

Man, this thread is exciting. Such a great build. I need to get my 3D printer dialed in so I can try to make anything even close to what's been done here. Very inspiring, and looks fantastic!

Honestly, the sights came out pretty good from what I had to work with... but ultimately, I'd probably use inexpensive airsoft versions of the real deal. Those would look best while keeping the cost down. That's part of the reasoning behind my making the top rail/optics detachable... partly for safe transport, but also so I could switch them out at a later date.

"For Sale" (FS) thread is up...

MOD EDIT: Please do not post Junkyard links outside of the Junkyard forum, thanks.

I'm going to transfer the list of names from this thread to that one... if your interest changes, let me know, and I'll add/delete you as you like.

OK this was greatness ! I an not believe I kept missing this thread somehow.
I know everyone has said it but WOW .. WOW

Can not wait to see more work in the future.

I am just looking to make a prop for a costume. I would not be selling parts or props and would site you as the creator of the files. I am short on time and am having trouble finding files that will work for this, it would be a huge help if you could share your files with me.

See the post immediately above yours.

If you're short on time, 3D printing likely isn't the best bet since for large things, it can take DAYS to make and you still have to smooth it out and assemble it. If you really are short on time, you're likely better trying to do a scratch build.

Good luck.

Nick is right. My kit took about 50-60 hours to print, if memory serves.
And again, no files are even available.
