On the contrary, when a mass opinion is all the same, it is no longer an opinion, it is a standard. I'd say the opinion of the new "Joker" (quoted as my own small form of protest) has been largely negative.
The tattoos are absurd. The Joker I've grown up with and known for decades now would never be so g-d obvious and on-the-nose. He's damaged and screwed up and PROVES it. He doesn't need it LITERALLY written on his forehead. Come on. He's THE JOKER for ******'s sake! Why in world would he ever think "I need a skull jester and the word 'HA' a bunch of times so people know I'm crazy"? Give me a friggin break. These new set pictures that came out just add to it. Not only are the ridiculous tattoos present, but he's dressed like a street pimp.
WB/DC completely missed the mark. In fact, they've missed just about every mark possible. I hate what the DCCU is becoming.
Totally agree. The Joker looks like a ridiculous thug/pimp/junkie, because it's all David Ayer knows how to do.
Watch the other movies he's made (except Fury and U571) and you'll see that other than a slight DC Comics influence, this movie looks exactly the same as all his others. He has no range and cannot work outside his comfort zone. He should not have been given a DC movie.
I think that if it was made and marketed as a stand alone, non DCCU canon film, then fine. That's what the Nolan movies were, and even though a lot of aspects of the Nolan movies veered wildly from DC Canon, everyone loved those movies because Christopher Nolan was very honest from the very beginning that what he was creating was his own vision of Gotham.
But this Suicide Squad movie is supposed to be an official addition to the DCCU, which means that these characters are only ever going to show up looking like this in future DCCU movies unless they do some kind of stupid movie version of the new 52 and retcon everything and confuse everyone in the process.
What annoys me most is that everyone who defends this Joker look says "but he looks insane and the Joker is insane and therefore it's a perfect fit!" but the whole point of the Joker is that he's a very SPECIFIC brand of crazy. There's a reason he has maintained the same key design features and personality traits throughout 75 years. Because THAT is the Joker. He's famous for a big, white, toothy smile. He's famous for bleached white skin and red lips. He's famous for the purple suit. There are so many things that make him the Joker, and though they may differ slightly between comics (like length of hair, difference builds of muscle, slightly different styles of suit), the core concept is always the same. Even Nolan's Joker had the same look and even a similar personality, just presented in Nolan's unique version. And again, Nolan was very clear with everyone the whole time that his films are not supposed to be DC Canon, so there is a reason he was able to get away with changing things.
DC is definitely losing control over their film division. They have no idea what they're doing any more and they're apparently happy to just hand over the director's seat for their films to anyone who bothers to ask. I think I'll give them a call soon and direct the stand alone Batman movie.
There are two things I'm taking solace in:
Firstly: Jared Leto is incredibly talented and will nail the performance even if his costume is stupid; and
Secondly: at some point, in one of the films, we're going to see Batman beat the crap out of this version of the Joker.
