Is "uplifting" TV dead?

F is for Family is one of my favorite shows, but it is rather depressing. I get same feeling when watching Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Funny, but messed up.

I recently got my wife and stepdaughter into Brooklyn 99, which is funny as hell, and it's got a lot of positive messages.

The Cool Kids is another one I'm into lately.

This is exactly why i stopped watching Walking Dead and Game of Thrones... both became so depressing I was wondering what the hell I was watching them for.

The only time I watch TV is when I go over to my parents. (Netflix)
My last few visits I binge watched Death in Paradise. "British-French drama series"

Entertaining and likable characters in a tropical location.
Danny John-Jules, the cat in Red Dwarf is one of the cops (thinks he's a ladies man and always giving bad advice to the younger cops)

Love that show!

I feel like this is happening with movies too. While I can say that I am highly critical of some movies and shows, often times it's BECAUSE they are so depressing.

I love all kinds of stories and genres but it seems the trend for entertainment has to be dark and gritty and full of realism to the point where the only levity you can get from most entertainment these days is if you watch comedy. With very few exceptions (like Thor Ragnarok and most of the Marvel movies) I find it exhausting sometimes that there is almost no market for uplifting entertainment. Real life is depressing enough. Does entertainment have to always reflect that or will we ever get something that resonates emotionally and inspires us again?

One of the biggest factors in this is "do the characters like each other?"

Old Star trek, stargate, the Orville, the good place, parks and rec., Etc....that was their key.

They were able to make stories happen while the characters respected each other. They don't need to.manufacture friction.

I first noticed this in NU Galactica. There was so much manufacured friction between the protagonists.

I just discovered "Final Space". The main character is so dang positive with all the desaster around him, I can´t help it but like that show. Despite all of the mutilating and killing...

Okay. I am 5 episodes into FINAL SPACE and I must say that I LOVE IT! It IS uplifting!!! It is SPACE OPERA! And I do wonder why it gets so little recognition around here...

Yes, I am actually kind of binge watching Brooklyn 99. I love all of the characters and the show is really Funny and positive. Great TV.

Good wholesome family television ended in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. I actually had this conversation with my wife a month or so ago.

Everything put out now is so PC and pushing a certain agenda IMHO.

If you are talking comedies, last man standing, the Orville. I miss How I met your mother. I wish Girl meets world had continued, but that is because I had a kid in 8th grade and I thought it did pretty well with dealing with early teen issues.

“Dramas”- Bull, God Friended Me has its moments.

Yeah, gotta agree on The Goldbergs. Good show.

JTP!!!!!!..................what does that stand for anyway?

The Price Is Right... Adam Sandler direct's, Drew Cary is funny, and it's a brand new cast/show every single day.... try binge watching this monolith from the beginning!! ;)

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is my current watch. Good show, fun. Stand up in the 50's....

And Orville is the only network show I look forward to. Funny and uplifting (often)

Second Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Also, my daughter binge watches Fuller House and it takes me back....
