Is the XL Rubies Supreme Vader more accurate than the Standard?

Was waiting to finalize the boots before I posted pics. Vader stands at 6'7" right now which is driving me nuts. I just ordered one inch lifts which SHOULD get him to the 6'8" I would like.

I put together a 1/1 Vader on a padded up 6'4" mannequin using the XL supreme rubies costume and MR EPIII helmet and thought it looked really good. I upgraded the gloves to the leather Sitharmor and took the lining out to get the right fold in the wrist. I was very pleased with the look.
I'm one of the few EP III fans out there:)

So... WHERE do you find these at 1/5 the price used? :confused

A close friend of mine would love to have one, but the 5-800$ price has kept him from buying. (he isn't a prop nut like us, just would love a fullsize Vader if he could afford it)

I googled and found a site that was down that appearently used to sell them used.

Ebay are all full price. Even a "used" one that is over $500.

Hey. I bought my Supreme XL used. Scuffs on helmet which I polished out, no smell, everything clean and nice. Paid about 1/5 of what a new one costs.

I'm 6'3". The suit was a bit snug in the torso (shoulder to crotch), but not to the point of restricting or threatening to burst the suit.

I plan on slowly upgrading and modifying - but for now, it works for me :)

Lowest I have seen eBay used in the last 3 weeks has been $450, and that usually comes with some scuffs and scrapes.

Has anyone documented the inaccuracies of the Rubies to screen used replicas?

Thanks,

Eric

Well Eric, there are a lot more qualified people to answer that question (look for a Vader in their avatar or a link to The Prop Den in their signature. :lol

But, I will take a stab.

That question is not a straight forward one because there isn't ONE accurate screen Vader. There are four. Vader had noticeable differences in each of the films (Episodes 4-6, and 3) with regard to his appearance, including his helmet, armor, chestbox, cod piece, gloves, belt buckle.

So the first step is to choose the Vader of your liking. Most say the Rubies costume is MOST like the Episode 3 Vader in Armor paint scheme, size of the armor, color scheme of the chestbox, etc.

I think most will say the differences will include the materials used (light "soft" parts, including the Robe, cape, and faux leather body suit - which were heavier in material on the screenused Vader also appearing differently.

The armor is smaller than it should be, and obviously the belt and chestpiece are all plastic without the metal components in the film.

Finally, the helmet is NOT an Episode 3 helmet (which had many differences from the original films including symmetry, droopines, and neck flare shape).

Hope this at least gives you a small idea, I am sure someone more knowledgable will chime in.

That about covers it. :) I knew there were differences between the movies, but did not know how the Rubies stacked up against movie used versions. I am almost finished with my R2 and there were plenty of differences from film to film there as well.

After R2, I am going to work on a Stormtrooper costume I picked up last year. I have seen a lot of info on the Rubies version of that compared to the screen used versions. From everything I have seen and read, there are some very noticeable differences.

While I have not done a lot of research on Vader, what I have read has been far more positive compared to a Stormtrooper.

Def. check out starwarshelmets.com. There's some info on the Stormtrooper there. In the pics I have seen, and from what I have heard, the armor is disapointingly thin and the head is WAY shiny for some reason. But I haven't seen it in person and could be wrong.

If I can explain some of the animosity toward the Rubie's Vader, there are a great handful of members here who are incredibly passionate about Vader in general. That means they are knowledgable about each nuance that makes the particular screen Vader down to the scratch. What is frustrating to them is that there are cases where blatant liberties are taken when it wasn't necessary to make that particular change. Sure, there are cost considerations, but there are plenty of cases where mask shapes, costume pieces etc. could have been much more accurate if time and care went into that. They also become frustrated when after taking these blatant liberties, the licensed versions puff their advertisements that mislead people into thinking the designer had much more access to the originals than he or she really did, or including misleading claims like "CAST FROM A LUCASFILM HELMET!!!"

Sure - it was a helmet that was chopped to pieces and reshaped by Don Post and then reacquired by Lucasfilm, then chopped up again and cast again, but you see that on the box.

With ALL that said, someone coming from a place of wanting a recognizable Vader costume that will say VADER without needing a nametag, this will literally blow you away. I was incredibly happy with the presentation and the pieces. This is unlike any packaged costume you will find, it is high quality. Just not AS HIGH a quality or accurate as a more expensive pieced out Vader costume would be. But he IS Vader out of the box, and its a fun stand in as you slowly replace parts with more accurate ones. Just take a look at the pics!

Thanks for the information and your commentary. :) I can understand when metal pieces are replaced with plastic or the thickness of pieces are thinned to keep the weight and the cost down as long as it looks right. But, I do not like it when the proportions just don't match up when they could have at no additional cost.

What really eats at me is when they use photos to sell their product that are not of what they are selling!

No prob HD.

I just found this thread that was immensley helpful for a Rubies ROTS conversion:

http://www.therpf.com/f24/vader-rots-costume-96358/

Here is the info by member DuneSoldat:

"Rubies Vader

To ROTS:

Helmet - needs to be replaced with an ROTS MR or equivalent OR modded to appear symmetrical and painted solid black
Chest armour - the Rubies is modelled on the ROTS armour but is on the lightweight side. It will not stand up to heavy trooping in the long term. Recommend reinforcement from underneath or replace with an alternate ROTS set. The Rubies needs to painted in the accurate colors and the shoulder pauldrons permanently fixed in place.
Chest box - needs to be modded as follows: 1. replace rods and coin slots with accurate metal pieces; 2. repaint box; and 3. light orientation must be reversed.
Belt and boxes - needs to be modded as follows: 1. repaint boxes and buckle; 2. replace foam belt with leather substitute; and 3. replace plastic knobs with metal reproductions.
Shins - modelled on ROTS shins; minimally passable if painted appropriately. Most replace these with a sturdier version.
Cloak - needs to be lined, hemmed to floor length, and an accurate chain added
Surcoat - passable as is, but most eventually upgrade
Bodysuit - passable as is, but is notoriously hot. Most upgrade this to leather or pleather
Codpiece - passable as is, most upgrade
Gloves - the Rubies gloves are not stitched accurately and will need to be replaced."

This happens all the time unfortunately. Our own CSMaclaren actually determined one shot of the Rubie's mask had been completely photoshopped. :confused
