that we have to look at giant pizza ads now? i mean, the standard google ads are annoying enough... but really?
does it honestly cost that much to run this place that we cant not have ads? even with maybe a member fund raiser or something?

I agree...
But then again I was given a thumbs-down for mentioning that every time I visit RPF I come away with spy bugs on my computer and was guessing it had something to do with all the adds.
That was about two weeks before the big announcement was made about a malware virus on RPF.

Be careful now...you might get a thumbs down.:angel

Yup, we are testing out new ads from google adsense, essentially the same ad service but with image ads allowed as well as text ads. As with all of our ad testing we will probably let it run for about two weeks, see how it goes, and then try something else.

Because we don't yet have the site fully optimized and because we are an incredibly niche market, yeah, you are going to see some less than relevant ads. Trust me, we are working on that. If the ad has little to no relevance to our members than it is as much a waste for us as it is for you.

In regard to cost... as we continue to add more and more services and take care of more things, yes, the cost of the site goes up and so our revenue requirements go up as well. We are trying to optimize things like our ads so that the revenue generated will meet not only the site's needs today but its needs for the future, which include a lot of new things.

And, no, we are not doing a "fund raiser" or donation drive. They are too inconsistent and force us to rely on too many unknown quantities.

You might get another.

You are grossly misrepresenting things (as you did previously) and whether ignorantly or purposefully what you are going is equivalent to fear-mongering.

You don't come away with "spy bugs" which imply that there is something nefarious and sneaky going on. Does the RPF use cookies and some of the ad services we use install cookies just like virtually EVERY OTHER SITE ON THE INTERNET? Yes. Is it some type of clandestine scheme to steal private information from you? No. If you find this so outrageous just go ahead and unplug from the internet now because the type of cookies you get here are the same as you would get from any site running adsense or vbulletin, no more, no less.

And to imply that the cookies that come from this site are in any way related to the malware that was maliciously put on the site via a third party is again either being said out of ignorance or due to a purposeful desire to stir up fear. Cookies from our ads and the SQL injection attack have nothing to do with one another.

Well I wouldn't want that Art.

Fear Mongering? Here I thought I was raising some interesting points.
I get your point however and will try to contain my ignorance in a respectful silence.

I'll take pizza over the political ads from late October. I was trying to get the RPF banned for going all political on us.

I am all for raising "interesting points" but when you points are implying something that is completely false AND paints the site in a bad light that cause people to be hesitant to come here, yeah, that is pretty much fear-mongering in my book.

Those were indeed annoying. We are working with both Google and our web team to try to optimize our words so Google will pick up more relevant terms which in turn means more relevant ads. There is nothing worse than ads which have little to no relevancy to the site.

Come on, complaining about Pizza ads?

I can't think of a MORE fitting site for Pizza ads.

Victoria Secret? For viewing maybe. To generate sales? Now that's not likely here. Except for the occasional gift.

Ads I get, and like Mic said, pizza ads make sense. I eat pizza, don't you?

Today I got a survey popup though. Just a small one, it was clean and X'd out readily, but I admit being more than a little taken aback by it.

I get quite a few unexpected things opening when I visit the RPF.

But I attributed it to my old MAC system. Updated as it can be, but still Pre-Intel, stuck at OS 10.4.11 and Safari 4.13 no further OS or Safari Updates coming ever.

At my work computer, i get a survey as well...It only happens after I post something...it happens for a few seconds and disappears/redirects into the thread..

Can you try to screencap this the next time it happens? Ads are one thing but you guys shouldn't be getting ANY popups from us!

Don't adblock on here. The ads are what pays for the RPF to exist. Photo ads are worth more than text ads. When you use adblock, the RPF doesn't get revenue from your views or clicks. I'd bet that if just a third of the RPF members used adblock or another similar service, then the RPF wouldn't make enough money to function properly.
