Are you subscribed to Stealth on Youtube? He uploaded some tutorials for the eyes and arc, and will be doing a repulsor tutorial soon

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

I am impressed with your progress. Very nice. I bet it is comfy too unlike fiber glass parts

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! New helm and 3d hip pods page 5

@ bobby: yes, I watch his videos religiously! He is a god among costume builders! Haha

@keif: that's alot! Yeah, it's not bad. But I'm really praying for a cold halloween! The thing is like an oven!! I'm going to wear under armor and add some fans inside the suit and hope for the best.

Update time!
Not really much of an update, really. I am currently working On the hands. I used the copier at work and scaled the templates up to 110%. Now they fit nicely. I'm also waiting on my next shopping trip to finish the helmet, arc reactor and get foam to redo my abs. The craft foam just isn't going to work. It doesn't hold it's shape we'll enough. I was hoping for flexibility, but got more than I bargained for!
Anyways, here I am all suited up with what I have so far!

That is just a place holder arc reactor! Don't hate! Lol

Still new to fix the cod piece closure.
I'm pretty excited that I have gotten this far! It really makes me want to push on to the finish line!
I'm also going to get some coating and painting supplies this weekend. So hopefully you will see some color on my suit soon!
Stay tuned!

Yr suit is lookin excellent. You take pride in your work and it shows. Well done man :thumbsup

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

hurry up and paint this thing. The foam work is great but the red abs are burning my eyes...

....lol

That's badass man, you're almost there. :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

Thanks doc! Thanks stealth!!
I'll have some paint on it soon! Lol

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

I got my painting supplies! (obviously not enough to paint the whole thing. But enough to start and make sure I like the colors.)
fEJiu.jpg

I got roof sealant plastic coating. (IMIM2's idea) primer/filler, body filler for gaps. Metalic gold for a base coat. Gloss cherry red and sunburt gold metallic for the gold details (I believe it was docholiday that turned me on to that color.) after a quick test piece however, I realized that the red I got is too bright. Almost like a candy apple red. I'm going to go back out and follow docs advice again and get some "dark cherry metallic"
First progress pics should be up tomorrow or Sunday!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

Wow cant wait to see some color on this one.
That back looks really good nice job.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

I love how clean your back especially has turned out mate...looking forward to the "colouring in" phase as it will surely enhance your already detailed suit

well done and keep us updated :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

looks like it's all coming along nicely man, well done :) look forward to seeing more, especially the painting stuff. I'll be looking for the best ways to paint my foam suit :thumbsup

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

don't get dark cherry metallic for a mark 6. Seems too dark like the mark III

get "Banner red" from krylon. It's darker than cherry red but not too dark to a point where it's almost maroon like the mark III.

I used the Dark Cherry last year when I was test painting a Mark 3 cast it was pretty close

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

if you use body filler for the gaps ; it will crack ; i use a product named DAP its like a acrylic with sillicone and its PERFECT . also to seal your foam i made my own technique and it work like beauty ; 6 layer of diluted pva 1 layer of straight pva : it completly seal the pores of the foam after its 1 coat of primer and 2-3 coat of paint . after that 1 coat of clear coat qill make it look like metallic , the result in my opinion are better than using plastidip

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

New to the forum been reading this thread n ur Iron man suit is looking good keep up the good work :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

Thanks for the input guys.
Stealth; I have decided against rattle canning the red. I'm going to go get an airbrush and use house of kolor paint. Does anyone know the right HoK shade? It's a mark 4. Not 6. But I'm pretty sure they are identical outside of the triangular unibeam. Including paint shade.

Oma; I tried the spray on roof sealant, but I am going to go with IMIM2's brush on roof sealant method. Seams like it will give me a good mix of strength and flexibility.

I really appreciate your guys intrest. Thanks alot for the input!

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

So you finally found it!
You may try to dilute it 50:50 with water, but try it first, not all brands can be diluted. I used 4-5 layers of diluted layers, it'll give a very shiny finished.

Here is the difference of the painting on Mk4 and Mk6.
Not a lot of shade in Mk4, if you use airbrush, dark shading like Mk6 can be done easily.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

No, I don't have any paint done yet. :( my tests haven't hone as hoped. The spray on sealant just isn't going to work. I'm going to get the brush on roof sealer and go from there.

I dis ACTUALLY finish building my helmet!! I'll show pics of how I placed magnets to hold the face mask in both up and down positions as well as hold the back piece in place. They work REALLY well. As long as I put a piece anywhere near where they go, they snap into place. (with a satisfying "KA-THUNK!")
I may have gone a bit over board. I used 28 magnets! :lol but I'm happy with the results. This will work just fine for now. I just want this one done since my wife is on me to get her rescue armor done for Halloween as well.
Not shown in the pics; I have added on the ear pods and made a 9v battery holder inside. I also made an adjustable piece inside the rear that pushes on the back of my head to keep it from flopping around.

I know the face plate doesn't exactly line up perfect but come on, it's a foam helmet! It will work for now. I'll get crazy when I start building my 3d printed helmet! =D

28 magnets???
Even if Hulk slap you on your helmet, guaranteed that the faceplate won't come off!
As for 9V battery holder, just use two magnets, The battery will stick to it.
(Adding 2 more magnets won't make any different at this point :lol). So make it an even 30.

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

Lol!! That's my engineers mind. "if it ain't broke,.... Take it apart and make it more complicated!! :lol
It's funny, u can see the progressing of my dremeling and magnet placement. The two magnets on the white hoop near the "widows peak" we're the first ones I added. The two on top in the plack were the last. Bit of a difference, huh?? I'm just glad I saved the two that are visible when the helmets closed till last! :)

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

I wanted to pick on that, but then I thought: WTH, you already having to much magnetic interference in your brain anyway :lol

Actually you can place the magnet from the inside and stack it two or three (depending the strength), so it won't be visible.
With the magnet shown like that, you need to be careful. Covering with bondo will reduce the strength, paint can chip at magnet surface very fast, because two hard surface keep scratching at each other. Unless you want to make it visible like that.

I need to correct my previous comment, the sealant should be diluted 10-20% only (some do not recommend being diluted, read the instruction), brush at single direction, and perpendicular on the next layer. Use soft brush to conceal brushstroke

Re: Ironman fom first ever build!! The finish line is in sight!!!!

The two magnets on the very top don't even quite actually make contact with the face plate magnets. The two on the temples hold it wen it's up. But with out the top magnets, the face plate was a bit floppy. I added the top ones and the magnetic fields being close enough stopped that. So I don't have to worry about those ones chipping the paint. And they are the only ones that will be painted over anyways. If the paint does interfere, I'll just cut out the inside and stack another magnet to increase the strength.

Thanks for the tips about the sealant. I am going to try and pick some up tomorrow.
