no offense but ya know If ya would take some time and look thru threads and and do your own research to see what everyone is using instead of us doin the work for ya would save you time cuz doubt you'll get much help. Theres tons of threads that go into detail what materials used. Just fyi:)

non taken, gone through several threads and builds including youtube videos seen different sizes and material, just looking for a consensus on what looks best, and which is used more. also not really asking for someone to go look through the threads to find out i'd rather someone who built a few and have tried different sizes respond and let me know what they feel is the best thickness.

I use 10mm foam and I love it. I have only done the Chest, Back, Brace and Neck Seal sections so far but it is perfect for it in my opinion. I think I will need 6-8mm foam for when I do the helmets and hands but we'll see.

thanks HeyMcFly88 seems alot of people outside the US are using 10mm. seen several people using 1/4 inch puzzle mats, I have a garage full of em that i use for MMA maybe i'll sacrifice a few to make the chest piece see how it comes out. also i think docholiday said he was using 3 or 4mm for his hands, id take a look at his they come out good.

I would recommend 10mm only for large /big areas like chest and back.
8mm is what I prefer. Since now I am learning to do bending, I prefer 6 and 4mm. 6 for strength, 4 for curved surface.
It is really a personal preference. if you manage to get different thickness, you will get to know which is best suited for you.
I find 10mm is too thick and finding trouble making a clean cut.
But again, that's me saying.

I did find the 10mm to be difficult at first but after I did my frst piece (Chest) and started to do more, I picked up really fast on how to use it better and better practices for cutting or angling the foam, but again like IMIM2 said, it's all a matter of personal preference.

Don't laugh okay?
Here was my attempt to make Mk6 chest using 10mm. As you can see the cut is not straight/clean.
The other pic was my finished Mk4 chest with 6mm foam, that was my first build.

One more suggestion, it's not a crime to combine different thickness. I recently made foam shoes with 10mm as sole and 6mm for the rest.

Happy building.

You do realize that the only difference between the mark 4 and 6 is the chest piece, right? So if your building a mark 6 but using a mark 4 chest.... Your building a mark 4. :lol

Knowledge is half the battle... GOOOOOO JOE!!!!

i use the 1/2 foam puzzle mats from harbor freight. they only cost $9.99$ per pack! its alot harder to deal with than the thinner foam especially with angle cuts and you have to use a hot knife... but once you get the hang of " mountain cuts" you can create all sorts of bends and angle...i went with those inicially cuz they were cheap...but i have noticed they make a more sturdy/durable cosplay. now i actually prefer them...
ck out this tutorial:
How To Make Halo Spartan Armor

after that look up all of stealths tutorials also.
note:
the brace, abs, neck and hands/fingers are better with thinner foam.

Helagak, saw Stealth say something along those lines that the only difference was the chest.

Mig407, yeh ive looked at stealths threads and youtube vids its what made me decide to build this.

The difference between Mk 4 and Mk6:
1. Chest
2. Unibeam (mk 4 circle; mk6 triangle)
3. Bicep color (mk4 red/gold; Mk6 gold/silver)
4. Thigh color (mk4 red/gold; mk6 gold/silver)
5. Knee cap (mk4 red; mk6 silver)

I like Mk6 color scheme but hate the triangle, so I created hybrid.
Later on I decided to create Mk6 chest, and you know the result.
I did simplified version of the chest, but never got to build it. Someday....

If you got a chance, visit my thread about building tips (link below)

I love to use 3mm and 6mm foam. Sometimes, i will just use two layers of 3mm. Its more streamlined to me. The 6mm from wandy-foam is rigid enough for most peices.

You're right, IMIM. There is also a color difference. I just meant, the only PHYSICAL difference is the chest piece. :)

can someone explain the Mountain edge and Valley edge and single sided edge? i noticed on the pepakura that the edges are colored with the angle of cut its suppose to be, im just not sure those terms mean. is a Mountain edge a 45* from the face of the foam to back like this /| and a valley a 45* going this way (outside)|\(Inside)?????????????? :confused :confused :confused :confused :confused

I bought 10mm foam, also. It worked just fine for the helmet, but I don't like how my neck piece came out. Those are the only two parts I have done so far.
