Iron Man mk42 AV2 Paint Scheme : Sintra Build

Hey all. And welcome to this build thread.
This is my 4th build of the mk42, and hopefully, the last. I dunno but the armor just screams at me asking me to perfect it in every angle possible. You may check my last build of the same armor here : http://www.therpf.com/f78/iron-man-mk42-v3-finishedpics-vid-last-page-175374/index7.html which got sold earlier than I thought.

As you can see, the previous build was okay, but nonetheless, am still not satisfied with the final outcome. Then I came across this guy's build (whom I happened to be friends with in facebook) : https://www.facebook.com/paulorober...508718622485287.121147.100000414607987&type=1 and woah was I amazed. He scored every detail possible with his mk6 using, not foam, but styrene, and other scrap, including the under armor details! Plus he has working gauntlet missiles and working abs-armor! So I looked for the material here but the only available retailer was a 4hour drive away. So I looked for an alternative. I got tired of foam, and as a friend of projectearth, he motivated me to use other materials aside from foam. Good craftsmen always find ways to have the correct look for a prop. Then I found sintra was a viable resource in my area. So I researched about it. There are good builds of using this material here in the forum alone, take Pannaus' Iron Man helmet build and demolition's helmet build as well, all sintra. It only takes a lot of patience heat bending the stuff and gluing it right.

On my experience using sintra, I've found several pros and cons against it versus rubber foam.

Sintra

pros:
Has a fiberglass smooth side to work on
Less sanding needed
Less filler needed
Easy to paint
Armor like hardness and thickness
Lightweight

cons:
Brittle [but I've found a way to work around this will be discussed later]
Hard to bend
Hard to cut

Foam
pros:
Easy to cut
Easy to bend
Easy to glue
Cheap

cons:
Hard to get that fiberglass like finish
Can crack the paint due to over usage of the piece/costume once sealed
To avoid cracking, rubber foam comes in 6mm, stiff but heavy, too thick as well

[if there's something I missed out here feel free to pm me I'll add it :)]

So there. Based on my experience, that's why I try to turn down foam this time around, but you'll see tiny bits of foam throughout the build which I'll explain. I needed to get more room inside the suit without sacrificing the fit look of the armor for my gadgets and electronics. The last build took a toll on me when the flaps failed due to my large back [due to weight training] squeezed the boards and batteries :(

First step was to gather enough references, and in this case, I wanna go movie accuracy again.
Here's a handful I was able to get :
408417_602364933107837_806184871_n.jpg599326_602364876441176_1888011608_n.jpg

1236057_662720230405640_147035760_n.jpg

As you can see in the pictures above, the suit doesn't have that car glossy feel. Something I kinda got in my previous build but not enough.

I also wanted to make the suit more functional. Sure I've made the helmet open and close, shoulder and forearm missiles but still, I wanted to do more power poses while in it. Much like this.
Trixster_TRG_3000_01_Poster_v004.jpg
Still think it's not possible? My buddy who made the detailed mk6 made a mechanism for the mk6 and he's able to bend in it.

Hopefully I can figure it out. I also wanted to have the interior look, so expect this build to take longer than my last build. [and yes I do commissions in between, I have commitments with my customers ;)]

So to start, here's where I'm at right now :

I'll explain how to get those angled cuts and gluing later on. Right now am working on the back so I can show more to you guys and hopefully give out some tips how to do it yourselves. Yes I know, I've been busy. :D

Cheers!

Greaat !
i thought i was the only one to notice the ab mechanism because no one built it lol!!
dont forget to make the extruded arc ring on the chest !
great build man !

Re: Iron Man mk42 v4 : in-depth explanation [NOT FOAM]

love this,,, cant wait to get an abb set from you when you work all that stuff out... you know i love the thinner look... keep up the great work.

Yup. Thanks! The arc ring has been installed. Was just waiting for the cast to cool. :)

Thanks man! Don't worry I got ya down for the working ab set. Just need to twerk, i mean tweak it out. :)

well as I've said I installed the arc ring to the chest.
1422457_701311126546550_520412261_n.jpg

and started to put filler to the seams
1468807_701311146546548_697176392_n.jpg

Now done with the main back part. Time to put those details in.
988760_701333759877620_12362360_n.jpg

And now I deal with some scratches and cuts I got from the material itself while working on it. Lol.
Time to run the heatgun across this beast and then filler/sanding time.

Subscribed :thumbsup

Thanks!

I installed the chest and back pieces together, using magnets for the top part and buckles on the sides. It is visible in the following shots you can check my setup. This method and material is similar to paper pep, but not much bondo and sanding needed, which I prefer. The brittleness of sintra can be solved by, yes you guessed it, Fiberglass. I'll be laying fiberglass tomorrow on the insides of this thing. The other side of the sintra I'm using is quite rough, so yes, fiberglass sticks to it. I haven't put my heatgun to work yet over this thing so some parts are still looking awkward, needs to be heated to have the proper shape and angle. Overall, I think it's looking nice. :D and more room for electronics as you can see

Let me know what you guys think. Cheers!

I'm really hoping there's a high-rez of this out there somewhere. It displays the two mechanical\functional things I've been trying to figure out - the knees and the boots. I don't understand the articulation points especially in the ball of the foot. I'm still working on the upper torso of mine but when I get to these I'm hoping to make them not just look good, but actually work properly too. I'm looking forward to seeing what solutions you come up with.

Ultra clean build!

Thank you :) But in person it's not that clean yet. :)

Take my money dammit!!!!

Thanks! I have the movie poster in my room with him posed like that pic above.

IMHO it's not possible to bend like that in the suit. It's purely cgi. The way his shoe is bent in the shot/poster isn't possible at all. And the knees can't be bent like that without cracking or hitting the thigh to the shin, well, based on my foam suit experience. But who knows. In my years here in the rpf someone usually pops up that defies theories of others. :thumbsup

The only logical and most-possible way you can power pose in the suit are like these:
%u00255BIron-Man%u00255D_redsteam_3d_armor_Mark-42_posed.jpgPhoto(34).jpg

AWESOME......................simply....AWESOME.

Thanks!

No updates for today though. Finishing orders.
I did, however, went to try it on. It feels lighter than usual, compared to foam that I usually use. I'll see if the weight changes once the fiberglass has been added. I ran out. :(

Wicked, subbed as well, I like your sharp lines looks very clean. :thumbsup

Re: Iron Man mk42 v4 : in-depth explanation [NOT FOAM]

wow, I Like it man

Thanks. Hopefully, you'll like it more once I'm done with it. LOL. Kiddin'. :)

Thanks! Trust me it ain't clean yet at this stage. Still needs bondo upclose :(

Here are some updates.

Again, I'm trying to recreate the under armor appearance. I'll be making the chest, back and abdominal pieces functional as much as possible.
So expect it to look like this in the following weeks or so.

Trixster_dev_Mark42InnerChestBack_v003_highRes.jpg

It was shown briefly in the movie, during the assembly of the armor around tony's body.
1471965_701918459819150_420898905_n.jpg

I scoured the web for reference pics for the under arm ring. It's not quite visible on the pic above, and as an avid Iron Man fan, it's always been there since the first movie.
iron_man_3_37866.jpg

I came across this
1470235_701918489819147_2081683911_n.jpg
and judging from it, there are two under arm rings for the mk42. The push rods help it move into position. My fabricated "push rods" made from scrap will be installed tomorrow. Once I get them done. :D

I made the base for the under armor. Good thing my mannequin and I have nearly the same shape. Yay! So it solved my problem with fitting. As I've said, you'll still see bits and parts of rubber throughout the build. The rings are also made with sintra.
11203_702395459771450_1634703822_n.jpg
Once worn with the back and chest pieces, it'll sorta look like this, minus the push rods for now. It's looking really ambitious now.

Hopefully I get to work more on this baby once I finish out the mk42 run I made in the jy.
Thanks for checking!

Re: Iron Man mk42 v4 : in-depth explanation [NOT FOAM]

Update time.
Started on the arc ring that kinda supports the unibeam for the undersuit.

734168_702939813050348_588028349_n.jpg

I also replaced the buckles holding the back and chest pieces together. Replaced them with rare earth magnets so I can remove the chest, or both chest and back pieces and just wear the under armor if I wanted to.

How they close :

And how the locks on the back are set up

It's like a sporty bra that you can wear under the suit lol

Re: Iron Man mk42 v4 : in-depth explanation [NOT FOAM]

That's looking sweet!

And thanks for adding those reference pictures. There's a lot I haven't seen before.
Hope you won't mind if I grab them :)
