Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (100% Complete!)

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Both Helmets Added!)

kwratster - I would recommend FB Mat, as that's what I used and I found it very easy to work with. However I have heard that cloth is SLIGHTLY stronger, so up to you

----------------------------------------------- Small Update ----------------------------------------------------

IMAG0415.jpgIMAG0420.jpgIMAG0422.jpg
I Knew at some point id have to do the hands - and I was a bit intimidated by the file - but tbh the Hand was actually quite easy and im quite happy with the gauntlet and the arm

IMAG0418.jpg
The Legs are looking good, and im wondering if I filled the soles of the shoes with Resin would the Ironman stand up by itself

IMAG0414.jpg
In-case it cant support itself I have made a Duct tape mannequin!! lol this was quite a fun procedure ;)

In other news as I was lazing around eating my pringles I realised the lid is the perfect size - so im sure I can make some crap out of that lid :D
PRINGLE LID = FTW!!

So ive Officially started with the finishing process - the Right forearm, Handplat and Hand have their first coat of rondo on, waiting for them to cure

In the meantime I was testing out some colours today - thought id test it on the 2nd helmet - This helmet is just cardboard at the moment so the edges are very rough and some other excuses I cant think of ;)

IMAG0424.jpgIMAG0425.jpgIMAG0426.jpg

I think ive found my Blue for the suit - its slightly darker than what the pictures show it as - but I like it...

The dark grey im not too sure of - I thought it may be shinier.... BUT I assume that will happen when the suit is rondo-ed and maybe a clear coat over the top
Does Anyone know how to paint things so they look metallic?

(Also ignore the light grey on the faceplate - that's just primer)

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Both Helmets Added!)

What kind of metallic? The easiest is to use the metallic-finish paints that companies like Rustoleum and Krylon offer, but the finish is still very difficult to achieve if you want a good-looking mirror-like finish like a chrome. Gunmetals, silvers, aluminums and titanium finishes can be mimicked pretty well with rattle cans. The best metal finishes I've ever gotten were from using Alclad through a gun, but that was never on anything bigger than a helmet.

I Was wanting like a slight shine to it, not reflective, but I assume maybe once the paint is applied to a finished surface as opposed to plain CB it may take care of itself?

Do I Use clear coat? whats that for, does that give it a shine?
This is mainly to do with the Gunmetal Grey colour as the blue seems to be alright on CB so I reckon itll be wonderful on a finished surface

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Both Helmets Added!)

I'd start setting yourself up to do some paint samples, both to look at the finish and also make sure everything's compatible. I think you'd get the best results for what you want by spraying your gunmetal grey, and then clear-coating it in. If you go that direction, you would want to use a gunmetal base-coat (not a gloss), and then seal that base in with a few coats of clear. The base gunmetal will look boring and flat, but the clear coat will both give the reflective glossy depth and protect the gunmetal finish. Spraying two-stage finishes like this can be tricky, you definitely want to follow the directions spot-on and also spray a sample or two first. The clear coat is going to give that grey a LOT more depth, and also darken it somewhat, so you won't know exactly what it's going to look like until you've clear coated a piece.

Another option is to try is to just spray a single-stage gloss gunmetal on, and leave it like that. I've used some of Rustoleum's metallic aerosols, and they have given good results. I try to prime/seal everything with the same brand as the paint I'm using, to prevent coats from reacting badly with each other. The final finish can only look as good as the surface underneath. :thumbsup

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Both Helmets Added!)

Ahh this painting thing is definitely hard work
I will definitely be whipping up some sample tryouts as I don't wanna mess this up Thanks laellee -
Captain France - I have looked into the plasti-dip thing, which would work wonderfully on the blue, but wouldn't do much for the greys if I understood that video right?

Kryro: There is a Silver Plasti Dip too.. there're a lot of colors actually.
The big thing is this spray is noxious, so you must put a mask and glasses. It's easy to paint or remove it if you're not happy of the result.

Captain France - I have looked into it some more, but I think im gunna stick to the regular spray paint.... although im now not sure which is better: enamel or acrylic

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took a couple days off this build for work related reasons, but I should be posting some updates tomorrow or sunday.
As It stands atm, I have one complete gauntlet with 2 coats of rondo and smoothed down, I shall be applying spot putty to the little pin holes tomorrow so I should be able to get one full glove painted and finished soon - then ill move onto the rest of the suit.

I am also working on freehanding the inner armor that people don't make because it would make it impossible to move: such as the Armpits... Crotch.... Buttplates.... Inner Elbow/knee etc

Updates soon...

---------------------------------------------- Update "Revenge of the 5th" --------------------------------------------------

So I have been working on this suit for the past couple days and im so happy with the results
I Have the full suit laid out and im working on the inner details

IMAG0441.jpgIMAG0442.jpg
On the Left is the "Game accurate" Helmet and on the Right is the "Movie accurate" Helmet - Personally I prefer the game helmet so ill be sticking to that helmet

IMAG0430.jpgIMAG0433.jpg
I Had to Join the Chest, Back, Abs and Cod together as one piece due to how the files were made - and aas this is a statue piece that doesn't bother me...
IMAG0438.jpg
...Even though it would still fit me if not for the helmet

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And well I kinda recycled a unused neck piece which seems to work pretty well as under armor - so I may use it for the groin and Armpits
IMAG0436.jpg

I Wonder how close we are to building a community House protocol?

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Suit Assembled!)

Wow, nice work there man, by the way I just want to ask, did you extended the side of the ab piece?

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (Suit Assembled!)

Thanks man, I didn't no - The Chest/Abs/Cod is All one piece - due to the way the files were modelled they needed to be joined to et the right overall shape so once I harden the torso, I can theoretically just cut the abs/cod away from the chest and then put an extension on the back of the abs so itll all fit again. However since this is a display statue not a costume ill keep it all as one piece :D

------------------------------------- UPDATE 16.5.14 ------------------------------------------

Wow, I really lacked behind on keeping this updated!
A lot has happened since I last posted - I now have a deadline to complete this by (but EASILY achievable)
For now I have elected to just rondo each part then prime/paint - When I return to England (next year) I will go back to this build and apply a layer of Bondo to every surface and get everything nice and smooth and uniformed. Because as you will see there are definitely imperfections - but for now I can live with them.

Also once that is done I will send it off to a professional painter to do the paint job as I do NOT classify myself as a painter whatsoever ahaa.

Anyway pictime!

IMAG0451.jpgIMAG0452.jpgIMAG0457.jpgIMAG0458.jpgIMAG0459.jpg

So I went down to my local £1 store and found the most ridiculous pirate mask and swords there was, luckily the swords were useful
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out a practical method to have the "Assassins Creed Hidden Blade" Style action BUT still be able to flex my hand with the handplate up:
Turns out it cant be done (effectively) so i've decided to Ditch the Blades idea (As Blue steel was never shown to have the blades....just saying ;) )

IMAG0460.jpg

I was then wondering what the suit would look like if I was to put a helmet that would fit my head in on it - Results were (well as you can see) comical.
Although I think somewhere just in the middle of these helmet sizes would work perfectly - but we shall see if I have enough time to build another helmet.

IMAG0463.jpg

IMAG0464.jpg

A Couple of images just showing the painting progress - since taking those pictures I have painted the full 2nd arm and 1 shoulder bell
Here (on the leg especially) you can see what I was talking about with the imperfections that I will definitely be smoothing out when I come back from work next year.

Tomorrow's Agenda - Either make a new Right Shoulder bell (as I am not happy with the current one) or Rondo the 2nd Leg

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (MASSIVE Update!)

looks really good :)
The blue is perfect.

Carboard is carboard lol, you will always have imperfections, the only solution is to put something on it to hide them, but it will be a pain to smooth and polish.

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (MASSIVE Update!)

The suit it turning out great! Can't wait to see it finished

Re: Iron Man - Mark 30 "Blue Steel" Build (MASSIVE Update!)
