Iron Age Iron Man Build

I got a LOT done over the past weekend to my Iron Age Iron Man build. I am now less than a few days away from the Con on Sunday and I need to get the whole thing wrapped up asap!
So lets get to it!

I started with the torso piece. I will be wearing a cape over the back so for time saving reasons, I decided to just make the front piece of the chest for now to achieve the overall look.

I templated the torso out nicely using Kraft paper. This is excellent stuff for sizing things up prior to your foam cutting and I would highly recommend it to anyone. You can see it below:

She fits great! I did however run into a problem that hopefully turns into a happy accident. I got so worked up and into the build that I made a bit of a beginner mistake. I cut the torso piece in two seperate halves for ease of use and construction. However, in my excitement I forgot to flip my pattern for the second half of the chest piece. The result you can see below:

The result was two havles, perfectly cut, but now one side had the EVA foam mat texture on and the other was the smooth side. I had no more foam for this and I had to run with it. My solution was to sand down the ENTIRE left side of the chest piece in order to achieve a smoother finish and match the opposite side.

This was a bit hit and miss, I sanded as much as I could by hand and managed to put my shoulder out in the process. However, I remembered that using the heat gun essentially CURES the foam top. I managed to cure the foam just enough to almost melt the remaining texture off! There were a few places where I burned the foam, but the more I look at it, the more I realise it should make for a pretty convincing metal texture.
20150307_165021.jpgHere you can see the two halves now stuck together with hot glue and its a pretty rigid construction. I also added some extra foam supports to the rear of the armour to ensure its not going anywhere.

As for the Iron Man chest light, I cut a hole out of the centre of the armour using a pint glass for size reference of all things! This was then neatly covered by another slightly larger circle cut in craft foam.

If you want an excellent almost frosted plastic for coverings such as an Iron Man chest peice or even eyes that don't need to be seen out of I would highly recommend the front covers of notepads! If you go into any store that sells note pads of any size, most these days come with a frosted plastic cover across the front. For £1.25 I picked up one from a local Wilko and used the front for just that! See above! It works great for difusing light when placed behind it!

This is where I will leave it for today, I have alot more progress that I will post as the week progresses! Stay tuned to see the whole thing done by the end of this week!........hopefully. :p

This being an iron age, is the chest piece going to have something like fire behind it, or an amulet? Since electronics were not really iron age....

Or is this more of a if Tony traveled to the past and had to recreate some armor?

Excellent question! I had thought of doing that indeed! Unfortunatley time has been my biggest barrier here and I'm a few days away from the con now. For this con I'm just installing some blue LED's into both the chest and the eyes. After the con, I will probably do exactly what you suggest and I'll re-post some pictures :) So for now, Time Travel Tony it is!

How about some more progress? why not! :)

So, I needed to address an issue which regarded footwear. To go with the armour and as seen in Skyrim, most people opt for the large leather boots to finish off thier look. Me however, I don't own any large leather boots and have none lying around!

Being as I will be doing alot of walking around Cons in the armour I opted for comfort first! I decided I'd make my own leather footwear instead.

Below you can see a pair of £3 sneakers from Primark. They are sat upon some £8 leather from a local market. I decided to add them together to achieve my look.
20150308_145807.jpg
20150308_151019.jpgTemplates were cut out of Kraft paper and then added to the leather. Of which the leather was then cut out and applied to the Primark sneaker base shoe.
Using some simply hot glue I stuck the leather to the sneakers. The overall basic look can be seen below! Considering I will be wearing shin armour and surrounding fur, I can create the illusion of a boot just by using this show base hopefully!

Looking awesome!! Cant wait to see more photos! Question on the helmets? They are absolutely mind-blowing! What are they made of and do you sell them or have you considered selling one?

Hi! Thanks, that really means alot! I make the masks using the same methods that they use in Venice to make Venetian masks! Its mainly layers and layers of pressed paper and all strengthened with plaster and gesso. The result is a rock hard mask thats pretty durable! :) I do sell them indeed! You can check out all the Iron Man masks over at my facebook. Check out "Fearless Facade" and you can see a few more in more detail :)

Thanks alot!

So last night I managed to get the chest armour all painted up with some metallic goodness! Probably took me about an hour in total which was rather fast!

As with all the metal armour I have created so far, I start with a flat black base coat on the piece. This was no exception, below you can see it painted black and starting to dry!

20150312_001546.jpg

As I had already inserted the chest light and the plastic surround, I had to create a temporay foam "cap" cover for the chest light as to not get it covered in paint! Drybrushing is not the neatest style of painting afterall. You can see the foam cap in action below, already earning its keep with paint on it!

So the metal finish for this piece was achieved using the same techniques as before, layer upon layer of different metallics. I changed it up slightly this time as I added a nice bronze tone in there also for some real colour diversity. The overall effect I found to be quite convincing.

The photo's and my desk lighting does not really do it justice and does not quite bring out all the different tones. Rest assured, they are there ;)
The only additions I then made were to put in some nice dark grunge area's along alot of the edging of the armour, along with in the cracks and slash marks to really bring them out! This was shortly followed with an application of rust around the rivets and in some of the corners.

The overall finished look can be seen below along with the ever growing collection of armour. I couldn't help but throw the blue light behind the armour to try and get a sense of what it will look like with the lights installed. Check it out and enjoy!

The observant amoungst you will notice I also have the shin armour finished and within this shot. These were finished up in the same process as the similar gauntlets before them. I added some custom gold panels to them for time saving reasons. I am now 2 days away from the con and unfortunaley these are not identical to that of the Skyrim Banded Armour. I kind of like them though, and the gold is a nice kick back to the Iron Man side of the build :)

Next time I check in, I've likely been to the con and had a photoshoot! I will be working on the mask most of the weekend using more familar techniques. Don't worry, I'll keep you guys in the loop on how I do that too!

So this past weekend I went full speed ahead on creating the final peices for the Iron Age Iron Man armour! There was alot left to do, mainly consisting of leather straps and lighting etc. There was also the small matter of creating the mask itself to finish the whole outfit off! I will probably do some seperate posts on the mask itself as its quite a process on its own!

20150314_155837.jpg
Above you can see a quick belt buckle I threw together with some foam I had left. This literally took about 15 minutes to do and I simply stuck it onto some spare leather I also had. The armour set does have a belt around the mid-section so I needed one too! The finished belt can be seen below!
20150314_162116.jpg

I also cut some leather strapping that was both decorative and functional for keeping my shoulder armour in place whilst I was walking around! These you can see in the below picture. Again, very simply straps cut out and attached to velcro in order to keep them where I needed them
20150314_180418.jpg

After I had completed the needed leather strappnig etc, the rest were just smaller additions such as the cloths/skins and fur that made up the rest of the armour. Most of this was achieved using the existing fur I had and also including some decorating cloth purchased from a local wilko. I "dyed" alot of the cloth to weather it a little and make it fit in as it was originally just white.

As I mentioned above, I was so busy trying to get the whole thing thrown together at the weekend, some of the documenting process was lost simply due to time saving on my part. Below I have attached a couple pictures of the mask taking shape.

20150314_123937.jpg20150314_200715.jpg

I mold the mask myself using Venetian Mask making techinques with layered paper and plaster. The mask is then sanded and Gesso is applied to give it a nice smooth finish. The decoration you can see on the side is actually more foam cut and applied where needed. This is then sealed before the whole thing is then painted. I also have my own wood graining technique that I used for the mask. The above image shows the mask prior to the wood graining itself.

20150315_010526.jpg This is where I left it the night before the con. Finally all done and ready to rock!

The next post will be the whole armour outfit finished with me inside!

-- FINISHED ARMOUR!! --

So here we are at the end of the two week or more journey to creating my Iron Age Iron Man mash up armour. Just want to say thank you to everyone and anyone who has taken an interest in my project, it has been very encouraging!

After many late nights and early mornings working I finally arrived at the day of the Con this past Sunday (15/03/2015) Below are the images of my finished armour in full. I was lucky enough to have some photo's taken of me stood within the Iron Man booth there at Em-Con! Stood between the two slightly less Iron Age suits of Armour! :p

Check them out!

BEST.jpg20150315_133641.jpg20150315_140029.jpg20150315_121257.jpg

I had many excellent comments and feedback for my efforts for which I am very grateful and made it all worthwhile! This is not the end of the road for this project, I am now embarking on making a fitting Skyrim weapon of choice to go with the outfit and intend on having a woodland photoshoot in the full gear with weapon in hand! Check back next week for more photos in a propper Skyrim-esk setting!

Thank you so much for reading my post I hope you enjoy the images. Feel free to share them around and give me a look up over at "Fearless Facade" on both Facebook and Instagram for even more pictures!

Keep it Fearless

Thanks so much! Yes, I intend to go further with it, the thigh plates were on my to-do list, along with a weapon and hand plates, time unfortunatley ran out for this particular Con. But I will no doubt add to it and keep you all updated!

ahhh right! I certainly did! Could not have done it without the heat gun. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the foam was to manipulate once hot enough :)

Have to say it looks great. Good to see it all come together and looking forwards to seeing the additions. Really interesting to see the way you make the mask as well.

Do you plan to continue updating this with the WIP on the weapon etc?

Thank you so much! I am very pleased with the outcome so far. I do intend to keep the WIP on this same thread yes! More coming very soon!
