IR remote LED switch for my Millenium Falcon

So, here is what I ended up with...

I glued the A23 parts in place for spacing, and cut a slot in the E42 part.

I trimmed the EL tape to fit and pushed it in the slot...

the EL tape has a sticky backing that will hold it in place...

I will end up using some double side sticky tape to install the EL tape for a bit more spacing and I really dont trust the stuff that came on the EL tape to hold it in place...

I used a small drill bit to drill a thru hole, then a second larger bit to countersink and a third bit to chamfer the top edge...and used a small surface mount LED from inside the hull to act as the large spot light just under the escape pods. The LED is pretty tiny, I think it should look fine. The LEDs are the type used to backlight the buttons on keypads. They will be wired to the off board LED pads on the PCB I etched. I will use the same ones to light the landing gear wells.

Excellent work! I'm slowly building one of these, mainly because I'm trying to figure out some of the electronics. I have a Madman kit, but I have no idea where to put the battery pack, I don't wanna button her up until I know I can change the batteries, etc.

Do you have a diagram of the hull lighting? I had one awhile back but can't find it for the life of me.

Thats the diagram i had! Thanks a ton! Upper hull looks good. How did you go about filling the sink mark around the outer perimeter? I've been having some trouble there sanding without removing the detail.

Could you please show me the sink mark? I cant see it...but in answer to your question, I haven't done anything with it yet. :confused
 
Around the perimeter of the circular section of hull between the engine area and the docking ring/escape pods. About a centimeter in from the edge off the hull. It's much more apparent when primed and held perpendicular to a light source. Hard to see until you get the angle just right, but definitely there.

I'll see if I can throw up a pic when I get home, although mine is partially filled, looks messy though.

Yep... I see it now. I had to take it outside in the sun to see it. It looks like it is even with the flanges that the side panels attach to, its all I see now. Thanks for pointing it out. I will be heading to the auto parts store and buying some polyester filler...that light green stuff for filling scratches in primer. I'm sure it can be built up enough to fill that sink. BUT, I think the lesser of two evils would be to just leave it be, I'm probably going to make it worse, now that I have all the parts and primer on...
 
That's how I felt about, however I already began attempting to fill it with Squadron Green. Probably not the best choice. Fortunately I haven't added any pieces to those sections of hull yet. After realizing I can't properly sand it without killing the raised detail I leveled it the best I could and squirted some primer in a cup and used a toothpick to put a bead over it. Hopefully between sanding and primer I can level it out. I was afraid after I finishd the paint and gave it a flat clear coat the lighting conditions in my display area would make it more obvious, so I attempted to fix it. Plus I've been hacking and hollowing out some of the forward hull pieces to make it more accurate so I figured I should try to fill it.

It's also one thing the videos on YouTube never cover. :/

Are you thinking about doing any mods with the interior? I was toying with the idea of building a short section of hall at the top of the boarding ramp, in the gun turrets or even opening the cockpit door and making a short section of hall there. Nothing too fancy, just some detail since it will all be lit up.

I also have a Slave1 I'm building up to go with this, possibly in a little diorama. Well maybe not so "little" hah.

I think I will probably give it a try too. I'm going to have to do some sanding anyway. I would love to ramp up my build too, I am liking the mods in the ramp area idea...and the open cockpit door is a great idea...mind if I steal some of your ideas?
 
Well, I wasn't able to wait to paint the top hull. I used Tamiya acrylic flat white and flat deck tan at 50/50. I thinned with an additional 40% alcohol. I sprayed at 20 psi with the brush set to open about 3/4 full and held the brush at about 6 inches from the surface. The brush was making about an inch wide pattern. I stood the hull up on the bottom end to paint...

Painted the inside with a few coats of flat black to block the light from the fiber optic strands...

I'm not even sure how I'd do it yet, so share what you come up with!

Unfortunately I can't start painting until I get a new airbrush. Thinkin about picking up an Iwata HP-CS.
 
Nice setup! Eastwood is only a short drive from me, cool place with alot of cool stuff.

Can I ask how you did the exhaust fans under the PE? I'd love to do that! Really like the look.
 
I bought the PE grilles and the resin fans came with...CLICK HERE... look for the little thumbnail to see the fans. The set is a bit pricey and very fragile...
 
Ah I already have the grilles from the Acreation set. I may pick that set up as well just for the fans. I really like the way they look.
