Great Tutorial

Step by Step is always the best Thank you.

15 - Et voila. It should now look like it needs to pee.

Seems you have fun while building it.

Re: Indiana Jones Voodoo Doll - Tutorial - Update - 24 April -The Body

Thank you fellows :)

Yo Mike ..... you give me way too much credit ... but I like it :lol :)

-------------------------------------------------------

So it’s Monday. That makes today next week :lol

Here we go for the trousers.

This is the ‘pattern’ . It is not to scale, so no saves and print-outs this time. What matters are the measurements, and simple, as they are at 90 degrees.

trousers-408x600.jpg

The procedure is practically the same as we did for the body.

1 - Cut a piece of material for the trousers, approximately 15 X 30 cms. Mark the centre.

pt1-398x600.jpg

2 - Draw the pattern on the bottom half using the above measurements, using a simple pencil and a ruler.

pt2-398x600.jpg

3 - Fold the material under itself at the centre mark.

pt3-398x600.jpg

4 - Insert the pins.

pt4-398x600.jpg

5 - Cut the top part open.

pt5-398x600.jpg

6 - Cut out the trousers.

pt6-398x600.jpg

7 - THEN cut the leg parting.

pt7-398x600.jpg

8 - Prepare the extractor of naughty words devices.

pt8-398x600.jpg

9 - Start at the bottom corner of a trouser leg, and sew using the same in and out method external stitching as we did for the body. Before proceeding upwards, in the corner itself, do two stitches from right to left, in the same place.

pt9-776x527.jpg

10 - Then two stitches from top to bottom, also in the same place.

pt10-771x524.jpg

11 - This will prevent the material from coming apart or fraying throughout its life-time. Strong sturdy corners on the trouser bottom legs, and at the top.

pt11-398x600.jpg

12 - Ready

pt12-398x600.jpg

13 & 14 - Give him a decent pair of shoes

pt13-850x579.jpg

pt14-851x580.jpg

15 - Insert the tips of the safety-pins into each trouser leg. Unlike the body, don't turn the trousers inside-out.

pt15-398x600.jpg

16 - Only handling the doll’s legs by grasping the tips of the safety-pins through the trousers, slowly crease the trousers and push the pin down.

pt16-760x516.jpg

17 - Then, pull the trousers up the leg by gently grabbing the material. Of course, my other hand should still be grasping the tip of the safety-pin while pulling the trousers up, but hey, you want photos right ?

pt17-760x516.jpg

Do this a little distance at a time alternatively on both legs to pull up trousers evenly.

18 - Ready.

pt18-398x600.jpg

19 - Remove shoes, and we're done.

pt19-398x600.jpg

Next post, the jacket :)

The Jacket.

Here is the ‘pattern’. This time, its to scale. So save, resize, and print.

jacket-839x667.jpg

1 - Cut 2 strips of leather, so that the pattern fits on the leather.

jk1.jpg

2 - Ah yes. More forgotten hardware. Pegs. Go nick some from the laundry room. Secure pattern to leather.

jk2.jpg

3 - Now that band-aid comes into play, as you will need to do some some firm pushing of that pointy nail we saw before, through the pattern marks, onto the leather. Grab the nail as you please of course. I do it this way & then place my thumb on the nail itself and push down. Not too hard though. Just enough to make a mark

jk3.jpg

4 - Once all are done, you should end up with something like this

jk4.jpg

5 - Now just join the dots with a pencil.

jk5.jpg

6 & 7 - Turn the piece of leather over. Make some rolled up small pieces of selotape, and place them roughly as indicated. You should be able to slightly see the marks on this side. If not, squint. They’re there. Where they are approximately placed I marked on the pattern on the left, those ovaly squiggles.

jk6.jpg

jk7.jpg

8 - Place the other piece of leather on top of this side and press down on the points where the selotape is.

jk8.jpg

9 - Turn it over

jk9.jpg

10 - Cut the jacket out.

jk10.jpg

11 - Take both ends of the bottom of the jacket and bring over the two edges in order to find the mid-point.

jk11.jpg

12 - Mark this spot with a pencil.

jk12.jpg

13 - Do the same for the top of the jacket. Let the curve of the shoulders be the guide. Mark the mid-point.

jk13.jpg

14 - The two points.

jk14.jpg

15 - Join them together with a ruler and pencil.

jk15.jpg

16 - The neck opening should be 2.4cms wide. So place the 1.2cms mark of the ruler on the mid-point, and mark the 0 and 2.4 points on the leather.

jk16.jpg

17 - The vertical opening should go down 3.2 cms. Mark it.

jk17.jpg

18 - Now draw in the ‘lapels’.

jk18.jpg

19 - I'm afraid so. Same as before, outside stitching. Oh, and getting wives / girlfriends to sew ANY of this for you, invalidates your claim to a prop you built yourself, and is cheating :lol

jk19.jpg

20 - Done.

jk20.jpg

21 - As before, special emphasis / extra stitching, on the corners, armpits, and the top of the neck.

jk21.jpg

23 - Extract all the selotape with the tweezers.

jk23.jpg

24 - Cut the central line.

jk24.jpg

25 - Cut out the ‘lapels’.

jk25.jpg

26 - You should be here :)

jk26.jpg

Don’t put the jacket on yet. That’ll be one of last things we do.

Just toss everything to one side for now.

We’ll do some wood-work next. But definitely not today. My eyes ache :lol

Just a short note to reply in one go to some messages I have received.

I haven't abandoned this project :lol

I've just been very busy doing house maintenance for the past couple of weeks, and end up too exhausted to even think of continuing on this little critter.

Should be all done within the next 1-2 weeks though.

Re: Indiana Jones Voodoo Doll - Tutorial - Update - 25 April - The Trousers & Jacket

Very nice, alan...

Good work...

Re: Indiana Jones Voodoo Doll - Tutorial - Update - 25 April - The Trousers & Jacket

Seriously what an amazing tutorial!

Re: Indiana Jones Voodoo Doll - Tutorial - Update - 19 May - The Head

Took a break from house maintenance today, so got round to this.

The Head.

How better to do this than using a picture of the actual screen-used prop itself as a template.

So here is the ‘pattern’. Print and resize to scale.

headpattern-886x620.jpg

1 Prepare a piece of wood 4.5 X 8 cms, 3cms thick.

h1.jpg

2 Pierce the pattern with a needle at the points you will need to transfer the outline to the wood.

h2.jpg

3 With a needle, mark the points on the wood. DON’T press to hard. Depending on your wood, just enough to mark it.

h3.jpg

4 The wood with the marks

h4.jpg

5 With a ruler and pencil, using the marks, draw the horizontal lines of the top of the head, the brow, top of the mouth, and the bottom of the chin.

h5.jpg

6 Join the rest of the marks to get the whole head now onto the wood. (Don’t worry, we’ll soon wipe that smile off his face)

h6.jpg

7 Cut the top of the head straight down.

h7.jpg

8 Cut the bottom. (I leave a little extra here, just in case)

h8.jpg

9 & 10 Cut the sides.

h9.jpg

h10.jpg

11 To look like this

h11.jpg

12, 13, 14 Start cutting / carving small chunks of wood, approximately this size. You must do this by holding the head in your left hand, and cut with your right, exactly as you would do if you were peeling an apple. Instead of a continuous ‘peel’, cut chunks instead.

h12.jpg

h13.jpg

h14.jpg

15 The shape (as seen from the top of the head) should look like this. Leave the top shape shown flat. Do NOT carve/cut this area, as this is where the hat will rest.

h15.jpg

16 Get out that band-aid. Sorry if you are squeamish. If you are reading this, you HAVE to suffer with me :lol (Yes, those are dollops of blood on the cloth :p)

h16.jpg

17 This should be the final shape you give it, as seen from the bottom.

h17.jpg

18 And from one side.

h18.jpg

19 And again from the top.

h19.jpg

20 And the other side again.

h20.jpg

21 & 22 Sandpaper the edges a little, just enough to get rid of the sharp edge.

h21.jpg

h22.jpg

23 Cut out the brow. Do this at a 45 degree angle with the knife. Go down VERY little. First from one side of the pencil mark, then from the other. You should remove just a sliver.

h23.jpg

24 Sandpaper the edges very slightly.

h24.jpg

25 Do the same with the mouth. At a 45 degree angle, cut along the whole shape.

h25.jpg

26 Then with the tip of the knife, pick out in very small bits the inside of the shape.

h26.jpg

27 To end up looking like this.

h27.jpg

28 Sandpaper the area to remove the rough parts.

h28.jpg

29 To end up looking like this

h29.jpg

30 Again at a 45 degree angle, at the top part of the inner edge of the mouth, cut a deeper ‘trench’, just as we did with the brow. It should look like this.

h30.jpg

31 Now sandpaper from the top of the mouth, till the marked line that is the bottom of the nose. Just enough to give it a slant.

h31.jpg

32 Also sand the inner part we cut out in pic 30. All should finally look like this.

h32.jpg

33 & 34 Now sand the side of the mouth to the left and right of the jaw to give it a roundish shape.

h33.jpg

h34.jpg

35 Cut off that extra bit at the bottom.

h35.jpg

36 & 37 Leave 1mm from the bottom edge of the mouth area, and at a 45 degree angle, cut downwards.

h36.jpg

h37.jpg

38, 39, 40 Sand to smoothen and end up like this.

h38.jpg

h39.jpg

h40.jpg

41 Now draw a triangle for the nose, the base measuring measuring 1.2 cms, and 1.8 cms high perpendicular from the base, on a piece of wood about 4mm thick.

h41.jpg

42 Cut it out.

h42.jpg

43 As we did for the head, but on a smaller scale, slice off parts of the nose.

h43.jpg

44,45,46 To give it this final shape.

h44.jpg

h45.jpg

h46.jpg

47 Glue it on the head.

h47.jpg

48 With the big nail, make the shape of the eyes. Press the nail down gently once. Then twirling it between two fingers, go deeper. No more than 2/3 mms.

h48.jpg

49 To get this.

h49.jpg

50 With just the very tip of the knife, very gently, pick at the inside of the eyes. The aim of this is just to give it that rustic look with 'bits' in it.

h50.jpg

51 To end up looking like this instead of two perfectly round holes.

h51.jpg

52 We are done with the head.

hf1.jpg

hf2.jpg

hf3.jpg

hf4.jpg

hf5.jpg

hf6.jpg

53 Starting to take shape.

Next post, if I finish the bleeding maintenance I have left by early next week – The Hat.

I just finished turning my guy right sideout, and started stuffing, we had some regular batting lying around, so I'm using that. I stuck myself a few times with the needle but no blood.... Yet

You haven't started carving .... yet :lol

Hi alancastillo1,

Thanks for the tutorial :)

Hi Everyone,

For those who doesn't want to risk getting hurt, you can get the wooden heads here:

First prize for bandwagon jumping :lol

Re: Indiana Jones Voodoo Doll - Tutorial - FINISHED

Woke up this morning and couldn’t get the Voodoo Doll out of my head. So I took all the day off maintenance & continued him.

(ignore some of the step numbers out of sequence. They are just to correlate text to images for my guidance)

1 Prepare a piece of wood 10 X 10 cms, and 1.5 cms thick

f1.jpg

2 Draw a circle with a diameter of approximately 7.5cms

f2.jpg

3 Draw this shape, 2.2cms wide, and 3.3cms tall

f3.jpg

4 Cut out the circle

f4.jpg

5 Like with the head, start cutting out small chunks.

f5.jpg

6 Always check with a ruler so as not to over-carve. Minimum diameter should be approximately 6.4cms

f6.jpg

7 Carve sloping downward, but don’t carve the inside of the pencil mark

f7.jpg

8 Keep on checking the size as you go (frequently). It is sooooo easy to over-carve, and you would have to start all over again

f8.jpg

9, 10, 11 The initial shape, as stated, has to be sloping downwards, like so

f9.jpg

f10.jpg

f11.jpg

12 The back of the hat, from the bottom part, no has to be carved upwards slightly

f12.jpg

15/17 Check how it is looking on the head. Make sure the tip mark of the hat is in line with the centre of the nose

f15.jpg

f17.jpg

16 As you can see, for example, there is way too mauch at the front

f16.jpg

18 Once centred, mark where the head meets the bottom of the hat with a pencil

f18.jpg

20 Now carve around this bottom area at a slightly downwards angle. (For screen-accurate, this part should be left 'flatter', with just the back of the hat having the upward tilt)

f20.jpg

21 / 22 To end up with this shape

f21.jpg

f22.jpg

23 Check again to see how it is looking on the head

f23.jpg

25 At a 45 degree angle, cut around the border of the mark

f25.jpg

26 Pick at it to hollow a little, around 2mm deep.

f26.jpg

27 / 28 Test it on the head to see how it fits, and fine tune the areas that need to be corrected so the top of the head will fit into this space

f27.jpg

f28.jpg

29 / 30 Done

f29.jpg

f30.jpg

31 / 32 / 33 Final check

f31.jpg

f32.jpg

f33.jpg

34a Prepare a piece of wood, 5 x 3cms, 1.5cms thick

34a.jpg

34 Draw this shape, 2.2cms wide, and 2.9cms tall

f34.jpg

35 Cut the shape out

f35.jpg

36 / 37 Sand it smooth

f36.jpg

f37.jpg

38 Carve these edges in a curved shape

f38.jpg

39 To end up like this

f39.jpg

41 Cut the tip of the hat like this

f41.jpg

40 / 42 / 43 Test to see how it looks on the hat

f40.jpg

f42.jpg

f43.jpg

44 Now check it also on the head, lining up the tip of the hat, again to the centre of the nose

f44.jpg

45 Also check that the back is centred

f45.jpg

46 Mark this exact sweet spot with a pencil

f46.jpg

47 Fine-tune the carving around this new pencil mark so as not leave any flat area

f47.jpg

48 Now draw a line at the top of this bit, in the middle, like this

f48.jpg

49 Then add this

f49.jpg

50 As usual, at 45 degress, cut around the pencil mark inwards, around 1mm deep

f50.jpg

51 And 1mm at 90 degrees around the circle

f51.jpg

52 Pick out this area

f52.jpg

53 Till you get this

f53.jpg

54 Sand to smooth. Redraw the central line.

f54.jpg

55 Exactly like we did for the brow of the head, remove a sliver of wood along the central line

f55.jpg

56 / 57 Cut a small ‘V’ shape at the back (note new cut on the finger)

f56.jpg

f57.jpg

58 / 59 / 60 Now glue it all together and we are almost done with the wood

f58.jpg

f59.jpg

f60.jpg

61 Cut a piece of wood 3cms long

f61.jpg

62 Sand to rounden the edges slightly

f62.jpg

63 / 64 Glue it at the bottom of the head, at the centre of the flat area

f63.jpg

f64.jpg

65 Comparison to screen-used head to check for overall size

f65.jpg

THE HAIR

66 Prepare the hemp and the selotape

f66.jpg

67 Cut out a bunch like so

f67.jpg

68 Put some selotape on a piece of paper, sticky side up, under-folded at the tips to keep in in place.

f68.jpg

69 Spread the joy

f69.jpg

70 Put another piece of selotape on the other bit, to sandwich the tips of the hemp shut

f70.jpg

71 With the black marker, stroke the colour onto the hemp on both sides

f71.jpg

72 To get this. Now you can cut bits of hair as you need

f72.jpg

73 Here is the head, now with 2 coats of wood-stain and one coat of Matt varnish

f73-498x600.jpg

74 Cut out pieces of the hemp, and glue them to where the hat meets the head, all along the back and the sides

f74.jpg

75 Flower Power

f75.jpg

76 Give him a haircut. Cut very unevenly. He’s not going to tea with the Queen anytime soon

f76.jpg

77 Take those extra bits you just cut, and roll them into balls

f77.jpg

78 Glue them to the front

f78.jpg

79 To end up so

f79.jpg

80 A little trim

f80.jpg

81 Stick the hair to the head by brushing Matt Varnish all over.

f81.jpg

82 / 83 / 84 Put the bottom part of the head into the top of the open shoulders of the doll’s body. Sew both sides shut.

f82.jpg

f83.jpg

f84.jpg

85 Shoes now become gloves

f85.jpg

86 NOW put the jacket on

f86.jpg

87 Cut out some cord for the whip and give it 3 loops. One tip short, the other long.

f87.jpg

88 Tie it shut so that the loops remain in place

f88.jpg

89 / 90 Sew it onto the back of the RIGHT hand. Short tip of the whip facing away from the body.

f89.jpg

f90.jpg

91 Cut out a strip of leather, roll it up, and belt him

f91.jpg

92 / 93 Ready

f92-337x600.jpg

f93-271x600.jpg

94 Now think of all the needle pricks and cuts, and STICK IT TO HIM !!

Awesome sauce!:thumbsup

Going to look for material for the pants. If I wanted a closer to screen accurate material would a tan or beige suede work?

This is a great built, thanks for showing the proces pic's, a big joy watching it come together.

WOW

What a nice tutorial :thumbsup

It show´s nearly every step you need to make a realy cool Prop.

By the way

Instead of getting boring you can start making the Voodoo Doll of Jack Sparrow from the new Pirates of the Carribean Movie :love

And then you will be the great Voodoo Master of the RPF

Greets Paddy

Thanks fellows :)

You can thank TazVader for this tutorial. If it weren't for his 'reminders', this probably would NEVER have happened :lol

WOW

It show´s nearly every step you need to make a realy cool Prop.

Paddy, if you need to know anything else, please do ask & I'll clarify anything you wish :)
