Interest Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model

Re: Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model - METAL - KIT VERSION

Hi guys,
we analyzed all pics of the original prop and always we find that symbol on it. There are someone that could help us to identify it? In that way we can recreate it perfectly! ;)

Those are just numbers.

Sorry, third line is two numbers. I thought the second line was the same symbol just not as sharp. Could be wrong.

Looks like proof markings for military surplus weapons. A lot of m1917s were proofed and sent off to British and Canadian units. It is basically to prove that it was built by the proper or actual maker/contract holder for fullfillment purchases to allied militaries in foreign countries.

Can we identify the correct number/symbol in the pics I attached? :D

How about this?

Here you can almost match just about everything on this one, minus the numbers on the prop

Mmm it looks different, in the third line it seems to be a 44 number

Just do an image search for Smith Wesson markings

It is 44. Like I said it's two numbers.

Re: Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model - METAL - KIT VERSION

You're right. Oops, I was thinking it was a faded out "19". I'm thinking it may be from being changed from .455 to .45 perhaps? I say that because it was common to do so. *back to reseaching*

Re: Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model - METAL - KIT VERSION

Or 49 lol!

Re: Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model - METAL - KIT VERSION

Maybe the year date? 1949? They were built until 1955....

Ugh, and there isn't a proof code database that I can find. Might just have to register on the "Smith & Wesson" website and see what those gurus have to offer for info.

Thanks for help guys! If you'll have more idea just let me know ;)
Thanks to both :)

Re: Indiana Jones - Smith & Wesson 2nd Model - METAL - KIT VERSION

I joined and posted the picture on the S&W forum. I'll update if/when I get any feedback.

@Sarednab

ETA:
Ok, so it appears that the number probably was "44" and what it likely means is that was the inspector's number. The "E" is for the Enfield factory that it was inspected in.

From the S&W site:
The broad arrow and the "stack" of numbers and what looks like Roman numerals most closely resembles what Charles Pate in his book on WW II handguns describes as British/Commonwealth military inspection marks.

See the attached picture of markings on a 1941 Pre-Victory with an Australian pedigree I recently acquired. I don't know the specific meanings of the individual components yet either.

But the year it was made is certainly not part of it, since none of that stuff (nor the markings on yours) looks like anything that was applied at the factory or anywhere in the US.

I will post more info if and as I get it.

Sorry, I thought you were just trying to identify the marks to replicate them. I didn't realise you were looking for descriptions of what they actually mean. The whole stamp is British military inspection/acceptance.

Some are explained here. The top one is known as the 'broad arrow'. The next two lines (may also include the fourth) are the view marks, which you could write a whole book on according to the link below, but the 'E' is for Enfield.

Whether the Indy gun reads 44 or 49 I'm not sure. Hard to say from that photo. Do you have any photos from other angles with different lighting? Other than those two characters you have all the other information needed to replicate the stamp.

Broad arrow
Crown thing
44 or 49
E
II
