Indiana Jones Forbidden Eye ride journal & map image request

I posted this on COW a while ago, but I thought it might get better exposure here. I know it's sort of a paper prop, but I figure a journal is more of a prop (though feel free to move this thread if you want mods).

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone made the diary or inserts based on Indiana Jones and The Forbidden Eye ride in Disneyland California? I've never been there myself, but have been reading lots about it online and watching a lot of really dodgy pitch black YouTube vids. lol

I know that there are opened diaries throughout the queing area (3?) as well as letters (12?), but the only diary photo I've managed to find online is this one:

Anyone got any better pictures? I'd really like to make out the writing.

I'm also interested in the map and obelisk sketches:

Looks like the old, no-longer-sold map was heavily based on it:

The above link is the best quality map pic that's been found so far, but it's still not good enough to make out text. Anyone have any scans of the map that was sold back when the ride opened?

Has anyone got any better quality photos of the journals and papers from the ride? I've scoured Google images and Flickr but there's nothing that would let me reproduce the journal entried in my own journal.

I can't remember there aver being journals sitting around while waiting in line, and I've been on that ride about 50 times since it opened. I used to have that map, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it for the last couple years.

When I get home I have to find my scanner and then I can send something your way. PM me your email.

Well there's the one in the image posted above and there's another one on the bench just below this large mural of Mara:

Embedded images don't work, so here's the links:

So they exist, but again, no photos clear enough to reproduce in my own journal....

And PM is on it's way. :thumbsup

I'll have to look for those next time I go in March. I've never noticed them or that mural anywhere around the ride.

I second that. I have a disneyland pass, and I havent seen the journals..Maybe they removed them. I know the line isnt the same as it used to be. They took several things out, and most of the boobie trap areas dont work anymore.

I remember going on opening day. They gave you this card to decipher the hieroglyphics on the wall. Most of them talked about long distance phone services etc etc. The ride at the time was sponsored by At&t or sbc or pac bell. They constantly change their name, so I cant remember what name they were when they sponsored the ride

Yea, I went when it first opened and really enjoyed the fire effects as well as the cool stuff in line. I don't remember the journals, but I was young and the mural does look familiar. At any rate, I don't think they're there anymore and probably haven't been for a long while.

I just picked up a few of these. They are supposed to be cast off of an original prop or something made for the ride. I have never been on the ride before. Anyone seen this before or have anymore info on it?

That is a really really weird coincedience. I was just given one of these, yesterday it arrived bu mail actually. Although mine is chromed. I was told it was sneakily pulled from the front of one of the actual cars. Who knows what it's supposed to be though. An artifact? lol I'll post a pic when I find my camera lol

One of the journals can be after the movie room. The room that shows you that 2-3 minute video. The line stops just before a display case with some artifacts, but the workers dont really give you time to look at the display..

Next time I go which should be soon, Ill take my camera and see if I can takes pictures..Maybe I can located the eye too.

Okay, here's a small scan, just like the above link. Low-res, to give you an idea of what it looks like. This is taken from one of those Engineering Disney type books. The entire rides queue is part of the map, along with the supposed treasure rooms that we never get to see. The ride's journey is simply notated as "possible hidden entrance to the legendary tunnel of torment". Unfortunately due to the image size in the book, one can only blow this up so big before looking bad.

Next is a quick picture of the map they sold. They 'aged' it and put a big Indiana Jones Logo in the upper right corner. The nice thing is, it's huge.

The back of the map was a bunch of hints on how to 'survive' the ride queue, as well as the Mara alphabet.

If I remember properly, almost all the good props were in the 'office' portion of the queue, and it's hard to stop and get pictures. I tried once and nearly got stampeded over.

Edit: BTW Ash, great album.

Some great pics there Ash, thanks! I especially like the sketch of the Obelisk of Doom (pity the other side is cropped out).

The map is so cool, I really wish they were still available. :( Of course, high res scans of the map would suffice for now.... ;)

And that sucks if they have removed the open journals - they look cool.

That resin eye looks a bit like this badge:

If it did come from the car, could it be this on the bonnet? (Looks priable....)

Interesting.... Be great to find a copy for my collection.

More than likely the journals were probably just stolen by the first teenager with a backpack to walk through the line with a large group of friends on each side.

From the photos they look like they're actually carved wood made to look like journals. Look like they're permanently attached to the surfaces they sit on too.

Got bored waiting for my journal to arrive today, so I drew up a test version of a page for the Forbidden Eye entry and tested some aging methods. This is obviously TOO weathered looking for a normal jornal page, and is done on A4 size paper, but I just wanted to practice sketching and writing. For the actual journal I think I'll do the drawings in pencil first then go over them in ink, rather than drawing directly in ink as I did here (some of the shapes and symmetry are a bit off).

Looking good.

If I remember correctly all the props are behind mesh or plex.
It's been about 10+ years since I've been there and i had already been up for over 30 hours when I went on the ride.:wacko

I did a quick buildup of the Forbidden Eye medallion to see what it would look like. I thought it needed a jewel added to it. What do you think?

I am pretty sure you can download my scan of the map. It's a fairly large file, 47.5 megs. This link is supposed to be good for one week or 100 downloads.

And yes, I put a microscopic tell in the map, just in case.

That's an excellent scan of the map. Thank you SO much for making it available. :):thumbsup

And Run Runner, that looks great - I really like the added 'jewel'. What size is it BTW?

I just snagged one of these pewter paper weights for a really good price:

I plan on making a rubbing of the temple section (minus the writing) for my Indy journal.
