IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 19.3

First, this is fantastic work. Seriously! I have two questions concerning the paint job.

1. Your red and gold paints are beautifully coated. How do you keep the two colors from mixing? In other words, how do you cover the red while painting the gold, etc.

2. I want to paint my armor to appear more worn and distressed, so the colors shouldn't be so clean and shiny. Do you think I could use regular acrylic paint and then the clear coats over it to get the same shiny, plastic effect?

Thanks for any advice!

You need to study how to mask for painting. And no acrylic will never give you those effects. Need to go rattlecan over the counter spray paint or automotive paint.

Seeing this build makes me want to scrap mine and start over. Good job !

Y im actually ready to start on the sealing etc and this really makes me rethink about what way to go with it.

This is far and away the cleanest and best proportioned Iron Man suit I've seen. Amazing job, glad to see that the 'xrobots' method works so well. I would love to start by making just a helmet and I wondering how you made yours. Did you do it yourself or use a pattern online? I see a lot of slightly off/warped helmets that I wouldn't want to put so much effort into making if they didn't turn out as nice as yours.

Is that foam? If so, that's probably the nicest one I've seen So far:thumbsup

You should probably take the time to read through the massive 5 pages of this thread :behave

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 19.3

Once again many, many thanks for all the positive comments and I'm amazed this thread has gone over 100 posts:eek
Magison I used JF Customs edit of Darksides pep files, but there are many brilliant files out there.

Drack 7kg Plastic?? what you building an army??? Or are you gonna cast that superb lid of yours?:confused

Well not much going on with the painting as its been arctic here in the UK so thought I'd remake the helmet. So even after reading many threads which warned of increasing scale by 10% what did I do?

You guessed it.....made it 10% bigger and it looked like a bobble head Iron Man:facepalm Hence the following picture:

Yep, remade it at 5% bigger which was spot on:rolleyes
Only after building it did I give any thought to the plastic coating decreasing the size of the eye openings hence the rough cuts where I increased the size of the eyes.

Plan to plastic coat inside and then separate faceplate (hopefully this will maintain the shape) before coating the outside. Will post pics as I go.
Good luck all:thumbsup

Yeah it's for casting a run of my helmet. I am so close now to finishing it. Wasn't happy with the upper lip, jaw and teeth so ripped them out and got the lip and jaw perfect before putting in new dentures :)

As for how you are aproaching the face plate removal, coating it then cutting it out is the best option. If you make them seperate they won't align correctly. You could try it in 2 pieces but heat gunning it to get it all squared up could prove problematic.

Sorry for my negative sounding comment on your thread earlier but I think you deserve more respect than I felt you were getting. I believe if you are going to ask a question on a thread then you should at least do some reading through it to see how it was achieved first and yours deserves at least that :)

Drack, might be tapping you up for one of those helmets if I can't get mine spot on mate.
Rodolfo, try as I might I couldn't get them to fit inside each other:D

What do you get if you cross an old deodorant lid, a bottle cap, a Lego brick, some polymorph plastic and a bit of paint????

You get some shoulder bolts:lol

Awesome technique! i am working on warmachine and needed a way to sand out the imperfections created by my lack of skill and i think this is the ticket. keep at it, and i feel your pain about work and family leaving you with little time to work.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

Cnt believe this is a foam build!! incredible! Just wondering if you could post links to where you sourced all your materials, if its not local of course!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

These are the best foam lids ive seen..good luck with the resin coats!!
Are you finding you have to be careful not to crack the resin once on and dryed?? Giving its going on to foam?

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

I really love that red what brand is it? I'm in the UK too but cannot find the right red

Had two or three tiny cracks on the edges but haven't been a problem.

As above mate will list up all the suppliers, the paint is Custom mixed AX5.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy)

Ok, so made a bit of progress on the helmet and even managed to sort out the hinged faceplate:D Still needs a lot of finishing ect and still need to separate the rear piece.
