IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) update pg 10

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) (Pic Heavy) update 7/4

WOW again! Still can't believe my little build gets so many posts and such positive feedback:rolleyes
Soo I've been away for a bit and I've had lots of requests for suppliers details and quantitys etc so I will post a full list in the next couple of days.
Drack regarding a tutorial I'm not sure how much it would differ to James' but I'll have a think about it mate, there maybe a few little things which may help others.

Right, been beavering away to try and get the helmet up to scratch. While I'm not completely happy with it I'm not sure how much better I can get what is after all a foam helmet. Think I may go down the resin path at a later date.
Anyway here's the pics:

I think it looks fantastic. Seriously, you've got the best paint on this forum, IMO. I just ordered some smoothcast 65d to finish my armor. I want to be like Shelfside when i grow up! Haha!

I've got a question since you're the finishing master. Any idea on how you could get the gold to look more like the brushed gold you see in the first movie? A different paint that's got more metallic in it? Some sort of drybrush/hand turning technique?

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

Lol thanks mate, let us know how you get on with he 65d. Regarding the brushed look to the faceplate dry brushing and steel wool works well. I used grate polish on my faceplate ( camera doesn't really pick it up) these crappy iphone pics show it a bit better.

Page 2 he quoted the colour models and where he got them from. Great looking build, inspiring me to make this happen with my warmachine build (albeit matte grey and silver!)

Fantastic work shelfside, still cant believe its foam your mark 3 is slowly turning into a life size action figure

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

Absolutely the best foam bild I have seen. I am going to put my Masked Rider suit on a mannequin, and start a foam Stealth Mark 3. Well, after I finish Predator, and Judge Dredd...then I will start...yeah, that's the ticket!

Looking better and better every update. Stoked to see the chest piece finished and painted!

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

I've been lurking on this forum for a week now. I have had to create an account now just to tell you how bloody awesome this build is looking! I plan to build a MKIV suit sometime soon but now you're putting me off. I know in a million years I could never make anything this good :/ Keep up the good work mate.

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

Dont say that man. You should use builds as good as this to inspire you. When I started I never thought I would have made some of the stuff I have but with time and patients I now am the proud owner of an Iron man helmet that looks exaxtly like what I wanted. Its a big learning curve but such fun. I have kept the awful first attempt and keep it next my (if I may say so myself) near perfect one :)
Never give up and you will achieve your goals.

Lol I said it tongue in cheek mate. I've downloaded the foam files I need but have run out of printer ink at the moment. When I have some more I will finish printing them out and get some foam ordered. My goal is to be able to pick my son up from school on his birthday dressed as Iron Man. Got until February so hopefully plenty of time. :)

Another question for you when coating the helmet in the resin how do you go about making sure you keep the lines and the grooves of the helmet I can imagine as I'm coating that the helmet would turn into one solid shape :D

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

What you've done so far is absolutely amazing. Does the resin make the foam rigid or does it still have some flex to it?

Re: IM Mk3 Plastic Coated Foam (WIP) updated 24/4

This is a labor of love and it shows. my first suit was a "decent" build, but my paint skills destroyed it. Since I actually like the Iron Patriot suit as my favorite model, I think I am gonna try for that one this time. To say you did this all out of foam is remarkable. If I could make a helmet close to that, I'd be happy. The biggest issue for mine was that the face plate always wanted to flatten out, and the side of the jaw had a similar issue. I know that since you plastic coated the pieces it is now more rigid, but how did you get yours to hold the shape even before doing so? The foam i used prior was 6mm EVA (gym flooring)

Yes!! This is AWESOME... Immediately started making my look for that foam, but not seeing it in the US lol maybe its called something different here? Regardless AWESOME!!!!!! I Can't wait to see more....
