Icons Klingon D7

Wow, I knew those guys were a little shady way back when but I never knew they were downright criminal!! Anyway, not to change the subject or anything (maybe there should be an icons horror story thread) but I have all the parts for the D-7 cast from the mold Greg Jein made of TOS filming model when they did that DS9 retro episode.

Interesting, how big is it?

Well, it's as big as whatever the original filming model was, but by laying out the parts I have I would say between 28 and 29 inches long.

I understand, just not sure what the T&T miniature size was compared to the original TOS filming miniature. I too would like to see some photos.

Given that the TOS FX miniature was approximately 28 1/2 inches long it sounds as if Greg built his T&T model in the same scale.

It wouldn't surprise me if Scott Alexander's model and Greg's T&T model didn't originate from the same source. Ditto Gene's "mystery" model (have you ever compared the two, G.K.)?

Greg's was in the same exact scale because he molded directly off of TOS FX model and then used that to make the DS9 T&T FX model.

FWIW, I just got off the phone with "Captain Cardboard" who confirmed that his garage kit replica and Greg Jein's T&T miniature are essentially the same, both having been molded off a copy of the D-7 miniature currently (previously?) on display at NASM.

I was under the assumption that the D-7 at the NASM was TOS FX model, I didn't know that one was cast from the original....... my bad. Guess I should have mentioned for confirmation purposes before that I know Greg and I've worked for him on a couple of films many moons ago, and that was the story on Greg's D-7 mold that he was able to borrow the model directly from the NASM. Anyway here's a quicky snap of my casting from Greg's mold, try to ignore the dust and quicky primer dusting....... this thing's been sittin in my shop for many years!

Didn't mean to confuse anybody with my post; the model at NASM is a TOS FX model. At some point Scott A. was able to cast a copy off a cast that had been taken off the NASM model. Scott didn't tell me where the copy came from, and I didn't ask, but I think we can all make a pretty good guess.

Point being, the casting you have of Greg's models should match Scott's model fairly closely (minor size issues notwithstanding).

Oh ok, cool..... whew! Well that clears things up, I didn't think Greg would have settled for anything less than "THE" OS FX model...... especially if he's making an FX model to be used for the star trek series.

Yeah, my bad for the confusing post.

Or posts.

In my previous post I stated that Scott's model had been cast off a "copy" of the (Smithsonian) FX model. I phrased it that way because that's how Scott himself phrases it in the 2nd paragraph of description on his D-7 page...

http://atomiccity.yuku.com/topic/615/t/DISCONTINUED-Klingon-D-7-Battlecruiser.html

Upon further reflection, what I think Scott meant to say is that his castings were taken directly from the original FX miniature (i.e. the same FX miniature Greg cast), which is pretty much what he says in the first paragraph.

It was Scott's use of the word "copy" that threw me...:)

Whew! It's thanks to guys like me that there's so much disinformation out there!

Would be interesting to compare the two (yours from GJ and the CC version) and see how much difference there actually is. I've always wondered.

Not at all! It's guys like "us" that make sure the facts are clear and accurate to the best of our ability! :thumbsup

Since the original D-7's were cast, are there any distortions(size, shape) in the model's cast from the original?

And have there been a few generations of castings?

I'm sure there are multiple generation castings out there. Speaking for my casting which is a first gen cast made directly from TOS filming model, mine doesn't have any distortion.

I did finally end up getting a CC version. It's a pretty clean cast and the size is impressive but the split main hull could be interesting whenever I build the thing!

I Picked up 2 of the CC's when they were available - awesome.

Both were nearly flawless. both of minne had NO = 0 pinholes or imperfectons in the casting, and are awesome models.
