Howard Studios 1:1 Reeve Superman bust painted

Agreed - looks great.

This can be a harsh environment to show your stuff of in... I for one think the sculpt and paint look great, especially for someone who has tried both and failed miserably (talking aboutme, not you)

Dan, I would bet the people who had a negative response to your work couldnt do a better job themselves. Im going to make it a priority to learn to scuplt in 08 and "brush" up on my air prushing techniques. I think you did a fine job. Keep posting. On an even more positive note. Ive noticed that others get a bit bashed as well. When you keep posting your work, people can get a visual of how you improve over time. I know Street judge got some of the same responses when he began to paint. These days all I see are raves about his work. Keep up the good work and keep posting!

Thanks, Scott, but I can't claim to be a newbie--I've been painting and sculpting for 11 years! This is my first 1:1 paintup, though, so there has been some learning curve involved. I do strive to improve with every piece, both as a sculptor and a painter.

If you are interested in learning to sculpt I have some basic tutorials on my website--it's www.danperezstudios.com in the workshop section. Good luck!

Great job Dan! I'm familiar with your work and am a fan.
Looking forward to seeing more!!
:thumbsup

Regards,

Ron

Yup, I am well aware of your work as well. I love your site man, great job on that and have been visiting it for many years.

I wish this board was warmer and sometimes its downright harsh. I don't get some of the angles that people come from or the basis from which they draw such criticism but for what its worth, I think you did a fantastic job.

You are no newbie to this hobby, that's for sure.

Here is the bust with the eyelashes completed. It added about six hours to the job but I think it was worth it.

Oh man, I hate to be harsh:redface, but you want constructive critique right?

Personally I think it looks like he has eye liner on now :confused...

Sorry, that's just my opinion, you obviously can paint fantastic, dont get me wrong, I think it would be great if other bust owners could chime in with their paint jobs, I do believe most of the detailing is more subtle overall.

Sorry, I think some people here need to back up a bit before posting. photo realistic skin on a solid cast is really hard to pull off, photography and lighting can flatten detail, and its for a client who could have given DanPerez a specific brief too. More detail in the paint would have highlighted sculpting issues too, I might add ;-)
Also, superman logo is a superman log, no? ( just curious , rather than stamping my feet here, i might add).

Constructive criticism is okay. It does look like eyeliner, particularly in that 3/4 angle photo, but that's more due to the photos than anything else. It looks pretty good in person.

In any case, I can't afford to spend any more time on this one--it's going off to the customer today or tomorrow.

I'm glad you took it that way Dan,

There is no doubt you are a fantastic painter.

If the client is happy that is the priority, but sometimes as cold as people can be some critique is often beneficial, not all the time, but sometimes.

All the best :thumbsup

Then you would lose that bet. If I am asked what I think, I speak my mind. This thread did not say, "Only give your opinion if you like it." When you show something off you take the risk of someone who doesn't care for some particular aspect of the item.
Was I disreseptful?
Was I rude?
Was I spiteful in any way.
No.
I didn't even say that I didn't like his paintjob!
I am not a fan of the sculpt and that is that.
If I didn't care for the paintjob I would have certainly said so as well.
