Ho' made ray gun build.

I love vintage sci-fi and decided a fun quick and dirty summertime project for my son and I would be to build an old ray gun out of crap we have around the house (picture coming).

I found an old soldering iron to use as a base, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a really cool fin for the top/sides.

We've no skill in sculpting, and our found parts don't seem to match up. Curious about your thoughts.

you might check out Estes Rockets. They are cheap and can be found at most hobby stores and will offer a variety of fin types. Another option is to buy some thin Styrene, which is also available at many hobby stores. I know you said you dont have much in the way of build skills but you can cut Styrene with a Xacto knife and then you can make whatever shape you need. Also if you want to curve it, you can heat it up in the oven and actually shape it very easily.

Sweet ideas. Above are the basic pieces with which I'm starting.

Awsome! I love "from scrap" builds :)

I'm in the middle of a scrap build for my two boys at the moment myself, but its a bit off topic (not retro or ray guns) and I don't want to hijack or spoil your thread.

If this is a first scrap build..

Two part "slow cure" apoxy resin for most things (most standered apoxy is fast cure [24hrs] but tends to be brittle, slow cure, as the name suggests, takes a few days to cure fully, but is way stronger). For plasic, Fishin' glue, I've seen parts break off above the join with that stuff :thumbsup

Ignore above if it's old news to you :lol

looking forward to seeing your progress :)

Not old news at all; being a newbie, I welcome any and all advice/input/threats/taunts.

:)

We have a family vacation coming up at a place where there's no phones, TV or computers, so I'm hoping we can make some real progress.
