Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, photos on post #23!

For reason that must remain nameless, my wife is creating a Trillian costume from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Does anyone have access to a good high quality picture of the Heart of Gold logo (pics below)? PowerDVD isn't really cutting it well enough for me to fire up Inkscape and illustrate a design (too artifacty).

Also, did anyone ever make a Hitchhiker's Guide prop from this film?

Thanks!

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

You two are not alone. I like the film to. Hell, I like anything to do with the "Guide". TV show/comic book/ radio show. everything.

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

Well, my mother-in-law stopped by to collect measurements and photos so hopefully we'll have something pretty close. She's going to take a stab at the Heart of Gold patch as well, so that's going to leave me to come up with a Guide.

I'm going to grab some screen caps tomorrow, I'll post 'em up here when I'm through.

Interesting story (to me)... my wife and I probably wouldn't have been together if not for The Hitchhiker's Guide. We were both on our high school speech team at the same time, and she was doing Radio speaking at the time. She had her copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide Radio Scripts, which she let me read a bit of on the bus ride home. I thought it was cool, conversation struck up, and here we are almost 11 years later.

Needless to say, I love pretty much everything that has to do with the Guide. We've collected 1st edition/1st printing signed copies of Mostly Harmless and So Long and Thanks for all the Fish. Working on procuring the rest, that's going to be one of those lifelong collections that hopefully one day we will finish.

Got long winded there... anyway... Guide screen caps coming tomorrow!

For those of you curious... my costume will start with this as a base. Not perfect, but close enough. I already know I will likely not be able to come up with Arthur's identical towel, so we're going with an 80/20 rule for this costume. :)

Here we go - a little rough round the edges, but better than the grab! :)

I have a couple of shots of the Book from the website & trailer (don't have the DVD!), so I'll see if I can find 'em on my old PC.

Wow, thanks Coz! That's fantastic!!

"Glad to be of service... " ;)

I found my copy of the making-of book, so here's a couple of larger scans of the book:

The original logo - a little cleaner than the online scan.

If you're in a building mood, what about the Point Of View gun?

Nice Story Dante8

I never met women like that.

I once tried to chat up this cute bird at a fancy dress party.
She was like "Who are you supposed to be?"
and I said "I'm Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the galaxy baby!"

She just stared at me like I had 2 heads... and 3 arms.

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

jonny5, I'm a pretty lucky guy. No doubt about it.

Coz: thanks for all the material! I am kind've in the building mood right now, but she's very clear that she doesn't like the POV gun because its not canon to the books and it bothers her. Plus she doesn't want to have to tote it around at the convention. :)

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

I received my green robe from Land's End (looks GREAT) and a "close enough" towel from Ebay (lime green striped beach towel)...

Later on this week I'll be going to Hobby Lobby to see what I can find to construct a guide. I'm secretly hoping I can find a CD/DVD case or bifold picture frame that will serve as a good base, I'd hate to have to scratch build it.

If I had to scratchbuild it, I was thinking maybe some acrylic, built up with sheet styrene for the cover and probably some sheet styrene and some metal paint for the interior.

Anyone have any better ideas for how to get this thing done? I've got three weeks before I need it and I'm eager to get started!

Thanks!

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

As I'm looking at the film, the opening crawl (where they show the giant guide) seems to make it appear that the spine text is written in the block style letters that the movie title is in.

That makes me very curious as to where the spine text as it appears in Coz's photos and images comes from... I wonder if there was more than one version of the guide?

For that first scene, it seems as if both the logos and the inside of the guide has light sheet or something in it to make it glow. This makes me believe that the prop we see in Coz's pictures is the same one, since the four wires likely hook the guide up to a power source so it will light up.

The curling at the edge of the spine could be something like gaffer's tape to cover the side of the prop, or a temporary measure.

I went out to Hobby Lobby today and found a table top picture frame that appeared as if it was the proper scale (I compared my hand to guy's hand in the picture below).

Its measurements are 5 1/2" square, and 7/8" thick, however I think the actual prop is likely thicker than the frame that I have. I may use this frame as a size reference, but I think for the sake of this costume I may scratchbuild my Guide.

I'll probably forgo the light sheet for this go around and settle for painted on or printed stickers, but I would like to work out some sort of brushed metal for the interior of the Guide.

More progress coming soon, I've got a scant three weeks to finish this one! I'll post some construction pics once I get underway!

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

This video is from the UK Hikers movie site, but must be from a early test, as it differs pretty wildly from the movie version:

Curiously, in the prop build pics, it looks like the spine text I posted is on there. Thats where I got the spine text from.

I think that the curling is black paper used on the prototype (the finish does look a lot like paper to me - black foamboard maybe?).

Here's a shot of the movie book spine - the same font as the Don't Panic on the back cover - couldn't track it down myself, but might be easier who can google-fu:

Dante, you could maybe build off of the picture frame, or re-fix the hinges to a spine (two piano hinges), and build up the 'page edges' for the screen.

Could maybe chain some white LEDs around the inside edge for a simple backlight (those dollarstore lightsabers?).

The cover logos do glow quite visibly red and yellow, but the 'off' pics make it look yellowy - maybe pale yellow frosted or milky plastic backed with red lighting gel?
Or printed transparency film?

Think your scale is right, BTW!

Personally, I like a couple of the earlier designs also shown in the making of book. As well as the BBC TV version of the book!

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

does anyone have any props from this movie? I debating on whether or not to get the prop guns from the movie that neca released. Not sure why they sell the toy version and the "replica" version, from pics it looks like the exact same thing. any one of them too?

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

If anyone decides to make a run of the Heart of Gold patch count me in for one. It's a cool design.

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

Imagine my surprise at this thread as I am working on a prop of the book right now. I am almost at the "asking photo shop guru's for help with the graphics" stage! :lol

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide and Heart of Gold patch, some questions!

Did you ever get this finished? I would LOVE a copy of this prop! I loved the way it was built in the new film! Any pics yet?
