Historical Artifact Replicas

The sword and shield of Achilles and other arms and armor from the Trojan war would be interesting. Homer does describe it in detail in the books of the Iliad. Salimbeti made some nice reconstruction drawings.

Since I know of its existence, I always wanted to have a working Enigma cipher machine. But as I would never be able to afford one is started to replicate my own.

And so far, I manged to build one working rotor.

I love old and ancient objects too so this thread has been so interesting. I have been making a replica The Spear of Destiny/Longinus from scratch. I am up to the part where I have to add the wording to the gold cover but I am not sure how to go about it yet. I also made an old rusty German Mauser broomhandle pistol. I wanted a found battlefield relic of real interest so decided to make one. I wanted to make it look like it had been dug up by metal detectorists and was grotty, holey and knackered. It was made from card which was re-enforced and aged. Turned out quite nice.

I've had a push on this for while, but unfortunately so buried with work that I couldn't pursue on my own yet.

I would really like to make a replica of Tut's door seal, cast base with real cordage, clay stamping and iron where needed. Nothing huge, but plaqued and mounted nicely for a mantle or in the living room.

That's really unusual and cool. Is this the real thing? How did that rope last that long? I get about 4 years from modern rope that protects my shed roof from force 9 gales! They knew what they were doing back in the day.

Yep, colorized. Here's the original. I like the idea of a 3d printed backer, iron for the bars that can be rusted up a bit, real rope, and a then stamp an air-dry clay with the cartouche just like the real one and let it harden up.

Oh and yep, 3,245 YEARS. Pretty bad-ass.

Some interesting projects on this tread. I find it more challenging to replicate historic artifacts well, because you are trying to copy something in a way that looks like it was made with historic techniques, and then giving it "enough age" to make it look either old, or something that had a lifetime of use.

I once replicated an entire 16th century house, with modern techniques.

It 12 ft wide, 22 ft long and 16 ft tall. Oh, and it is portable. the whole thing unscrews and fits in a 24' cargo trailer

Beautiful project, and I love the portability!

At the Renaissaince Festival in Shakopee Minnesota (I want to say it's the largest in the midwest), they were building a church using all of the correct tools and techniques for the period. They were building this thing for years I believe, only working on it during the festival season, but it was awesome to see the tools and craftsmanship used in real time to build this one structure.

It was sealed underground far from air, moisture and bugs/rodents where other wooden pieces, and I believe seeds/grains were found too?
