If you have a Harbor Freight near you, they have an awesome dremel kit for $8. Comes with about 40 different bits, including sanding and drilling bits!

It's definitely a good start up kit!

Start with a handheld tool like a dremel rather than big stuff like circular saws. You might also want to pick up a kit to finish off to get used to it before starting something from scratch.

I think everyone is a little terrified when beginning, but the best way is to just try. A dremel is an excellent tool and useful in almost any prop build. Whenever I use a new tool, I like to try it out on scrap material first, just until I learn how it operates and to get a feel for it before I use it on an actual project. If you truly are uncomfortable, have someone show you how, and watch them for awhile before starting yourself.

I've been making costumes for a few years, but only just starting to get into replica/cosplay stuff. Starting to become obsessed with making superhero costumes...

Anyways, I don't have much of a portfolio at the moment, and currently working on Black Widow, Iron Man, Valkyrie, and plan to at some point do The Rocketeer, Scout Trooper, Boba Fett, etc.. My list is pretty long haha

My specialty, per se has been molds and sculpting, etc. But I'd like to get more into sewing and such.

And be smart about it. Make sure to wear eye protection and to tie your hair back when using a dremel. Safety first! When using cutting disks, don't force it forward, let it move forward while you guide it. Once you start forcing it you'll know right away because you'll start snapping disks. That's when tip #1 comes in handy - wearing eye protection.

Trust me when I say that I hurt myself and often. Generally on things I shouldn't be able to hurt myself on, but I manage to find a way. I've never, ever seriously hurt myself with a dremel and I've been using one for about 10 years now. I've been hurt waaaaay worse with my sewing machine...twice....but that's a different story. So don't fear the dremel. It is your costuming and prop building friend and soon will be your favorite tool!

It might even help you to have a dremel with the flex shaft attachment. This gives you a much smaller wand to hold on to which works great for us ladies with smaller hands. Feels like you have better control that way and is a little less weight in your hand.

haha, funny that I've never been afraid of a sewing machine and it's sharp needle, poke myself with pins so often that I barely feel it anymore, but power tools are scary. I'm just starting to want to make props to go with my costumes, so I'll look into getting a dremel around Christmas/Boxing Day. Hopefully I can get it on sale.

Pimperella - Your fabric collection sounds spectacular. For fabric, I start out at Joann to see what I need. If I can't find what I need, I have a list of fabric websites I go to specifically, a list for spandex, a list for decorator fabric, etc. I usually buy what I need but I always buy extra so I have a lot off fabric sitting around in my sewing room.

Moonwildflower - OMG, Silent Hill! Your work is amazing! I'm actually part of an all-girls Horror blog and I would love to feature you for a costume spotlight.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! I just posted this in the newbie thread, but I think it also seems fitting here. This is actually the thread that convinced me to finally get off my ass and join the RPF. Thanks Abby.

My name is Meagan Marie, and as you might expect, I'm new to the RPF. I've been meaning to join up for ages, and am excited to finally take the plunge.

A little about me. Been a fan of video games my entire life, which eventually lead me to secure a job at Game Informer Magazine after graduating college. Gaming (and more specifically, Lara Croft) got me into comics, which eventually lead to cosplay. I've been cosplaying since 2005, although my early costumes are pretty embarrassing. Funny enough, after writing a cover story about the new Tomb Raider for GI back in 2010, I was offered a position as Community & Communications Manager for Crystal Dynamics, and now work on the franchise. It's sort a dream come true.

The job keeps me incredibly busy, and I'm traveling for work at least twice a month at the moment. As such, I've been hesitant to join the boards - not wanting to start posting and be unable to commit to some meaningful interactions due to time.

I figure if I have time to make costumes, I have time to make them right, however. I often work on my costumes alone and through much trial and error, which has lead to unnecessary expenses and frustrations. So, I'm hear to learn, and to share when I can!

In regards to my personal style, I love armor and prop fabrication. I hate to sew, but I can do it when necessary. You can see my full gallery of costumes here: Cosplay | Meagan's Blog

Each costume writeup states if it was made in full by myself, a collaborate project, or a commission.

I try to learn a new skill with each project I take on, and right now I'm fixated on leather working! I've got a really cool project that I'll most likely detail here on the boards as soon as I kick it off!
