I've wanted to make this dress for years but never thought I'd do it. Then when an old friend made it and gave me her left over fabric it became more of a question of when rather than if I'd make it. After living at Disney World for a year and not being able to sew I came back home and wanted a big project. My friend wanted to do Ron's Yule Ball robes so I decided to do Hermione's so we could attend the Yule Ball at Dragon*Con together.
Because I'm not a tiny girl, I am changing up the gown a bit. I look better in seperates so instead of it being a dress I'm making it a skirt and bodice, but the way they will be sewn I don't think you'll notice they are two seperate pieces. I was preparing myself to struggle with this costume, but so far it was gone together beautifully! I drafted the pattern myelf, made a mock up, improvised with the ruffles knowing at some point I'd hit a roadblock but so far that hasn't been the case. Everything has lined up properly, sewn nicely. Everything.
Here are pics so far...
Skirt laid out. Still have one more ruffle to put on towards the top:
Pic of the front of the skirt, still haven't sewn up the middle:
Back of the skirt:
I do have a few things I don't like about it. The first being the colors. Because I didn't know if I'd look good in the gown and didn't want to spend the time and money dying the pieces that I might not look good in, so I did the fabric in different colors. I'm not entirely happy with this decision because I don't like the transition of the colors on the dress. It's also not dark enough towads the bottom so I am going to go in and sponge on some color to it to make it better.
I also am not happy with the next to the last ruffle. It's not fluffy enough and looks a bit awkward compared to the other ruffles, which all still need to be cut to sized and serged.
But what do y'all think so far?
