I have a 7 year old son whos shown no previous artistic intrest, though he loves to watch me work and loves to help. he was off school and I had booked the day off and i was just pottering around I noticed he was busy crouched over the living room table engrossed in something i went over to see what he was doing and I was totaly blown away he'd made a small 1" sculpture from modeling clay it really chocked me up the thing was so intricate. he said there you go daddy i hope you like it. ...:cry
he then spent most of the afternoon making 4 more. well the thing is as its made from modeling clay how can i preserve this i was thinking maybe acrylic resin but I have no casting experience and no idea were to get stuff from Im in the uk any help pointing me in the right direction would be a great help

You are a good daddy, but terrible poster. This thread needs pics.

Modeling clay will remain in its shape if undisturbed. You can build a small display box, or simply spray a few layers of Acrylic matte finish onto it and keep it on a shelf.

Modeling clay will deform if exposed to heat, so keep it off the window sill.

I'd suggest putting it into a clear plastic box.

Great story! Hope you get it cast okay. :thumbsup

agreed!

Also, you can buy silicone from tapplastics.com and make a mold of it, then cast in in resin or whatever you want. It's pretty resistant to heat too, so you might even be able to make a bronze statue or something
:):thumbsup

or maybe if you want the actual thing he made on display you can coat it in clear resin... or even make like a cube of clear resin around it. they have that on there too.

Silicone can't stand up to bronze casting temps, but you can cast britannia (pewter) into it. For a bronze, you'd need to cast a wax pattern from your rubber mold and investment cast it.

That is a really awesome story, hope your efforts to preserve your son's sculpts turn out well.:)

Thanks, always wondered about that :thumbsup

you know, you could always preserve them in a block of clear acrylic resin
it would be much simpler to do, and would keep the colored clay, because obviously, he designed those to be finished pieces

and then you'd have a phenominal paperweight to show off his creations

btw, those are great

That clear resin always goes yellow over time.

I've got a paperweight I made more than 20 years ago in clear casting polyester and it still looks clear.

You may want to use caution embedding a non drying clay though as the heat of the resin setting might melt the pieces.
