Help with basics for making a sonic screwdriver

Alright, first off I have only done something like this once and that was when I was 14 or so. Back then I decided use a couple red LEDs and a visor toy I had to make my own X-men Cyclops visor (it worked well enough for me but didn't really look the part.

So, that said I have next to no experience with this sort of thing and I would like to change that.

I have 1 working Character Options toy sonic screwdriver (10s) and one broken one (pretty much same design).

The broken one is broken (but glued) physically, and the wires have been severed. I'm looking to cannibalize this one for the project so I'll have access to the sound chip from that for the new prop. (though I have no idea how to get it open without smashing anything, which I would prefer not to do if possible).

I've yet to work out my design for the new Sonic I'm going to make but I want it to look based off 10s.

After re-watching "Smith and Jones", "The Eleventh Hour", "partner's in crime" and the second to last episode of Torchwood Season 2, I came up with an idea for a script in which a human found the discarded Sonic Pen as well as one or the other broken Sonic Screwdrivers that 10 and 11 had just chucked on the ground. (If I manage not to destroy the casing for my broken screw driver I'm going to see if I can't pain it to look burnt out like those two). Between having a working sonic device (the pen) and possibly access to Toshiko's sonic modulator (Torchwood) the character could then have devised a prototype sonic, which is what I'm hoping to make.

Is there anyone on the forum who could help point me in the direction of a beginner's tutorial for this sort of thing (especially getting the old one open as carefully as possible.

Lastly after the voting is done on the custom Screwdriver challenge if the creator of number 17 could give me any advice I would love that. That piece is gorgeous. All you people in that contest and the reason I joined this forum.
