Help with a studio scale clone gunship

Hey guys,

Noob here with a question for you master prop builders. As the title suggests I want to construct a SS clone gunship for my Medicom Clone trooper. Unfortunately I have no idea how to actually go about this, any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, what a question! I would first start by putting together every visual reference you can. The best thing would be to get hold of some wireframe files of the actual craft - I don't think one was ever build, apart from the concept maquette, if any, perhaps? You could probably get 3D printed parts for some sections - ie, the front, but I would probably build the central area in sheet styrene and perspex. The hard part here is going to be the bubble gun emplacements from memory on both the forward canopy and the wings.
I have a feeling that this is going to be a real learning experience for you...

Was there even a physical model? (Not counting maquettes)

Well I'd say there was a physical model. I would consider the maquettes as the the plain reference builds for the prequels as such. The gunship model was fully detailed, painted and weathered (I imagine for scannig and texturing purpouses for conversion to CGI).

There is perhaps info for it in the deluxe Sculpting a Galaxy (sadly, only a thumbnail in the regular edition in the visual glossary). So I have no idea what its specs are.

"The Art of Star Wars: AOTC" has a couple of photos of a gunship model on pages 160 and 161. The caption just says "model," so I don't know if it was used for filming or just as a study model, but it is fully detailed.

Hands down my favorite vehicle from the new movies, I would buy a kit of this in a heartbeat!

We are talking this gunship? right?

It's a Diecast model from Code3, might help with some details.

Yup:thumbsup, That would really help with my project, just out curiosity, Where did you get it?

Awesome! I'll try to find a copy this weekend, Thanks for the tip:thumbsup

:lol you said it bud, This will be my first time attempting anything like this so I'm expecting a lot of heartache and cursing in the future. Where would I acquire a wire frame model of the gunship? I assume your talking about digital wire frame, right?

I'm going to pick up episode 2 and 3 this weekend for reference, and possibly the toy version of the gunship. If anyone has any reference material (pictures, links to ss build up threads, etc.) they believe might be helpful please post in this thread, drop me a PM, or send me a e-mail at thrillho83@gmail.com

Thanks for all the help so far.:thumbsup

Sorry about the delay in this post. I only just found this thread.
They did make a fairly detailed model of the Gunship for the movie.
It was on the tour in the far east.
I would say it was about 1/24 scale, about the same size as the Hasbro Gunship. It has thinner wings, though, and more accurate rocket launchers, front cannons, and rear door mechanism than the toy.
A relatively small amount of work would be required to make the Hasbro gunship into a good model, and it wouldn't be as hard as scratching the entire thing.
Here is an image of the model they made:
