My 3 year old daughters a kinder egg fanatic so for Easter I want to make a giant kinder egg from fibre glass then air brush the details on. Can you guys advise how hard it would be to use fibreglass but mainly I need advise on how to make the mould. What can I use to make the mould. I would like it to be around 4foot high. Thanks for reading guys

I hope she doesn't try to eat it!

Ermmm, I've no clue, but this is what I'd try:

To make something to mould, get something 3 1/2 feet long, piece of wood etc, wrap some filler around it (foam for example, shaped to an oval with duct tape), then wrap it in aluminium foil until you have the oval shape you want, lots and lots of foil, to make an armature of sorts, and then apply clay to the foil, and smooth it until you are happy with the egg shape... then mould that maybe? You could then apply some mould release, then mould each half in plaster/plaster paris.

I'm sure there will be plenty of other easier solutions though from other members.

Sometimes it is easier to pay someone else to do it, rather than starting from scratch, learning, paying for mistakes etc. Not to put you off making it yourself, but sometimes there are huge learning curves.

Thank you so so much for replying. Can I just ask what you would suggest making the mould for the fibre glass from once I've assembled the egg. Thanks

Personally I would have made half an egg the moulded that with fibreglass making sure it coated in a good release agent first. Use quite a few layers of fibreglass and resin as it wants to be stronger than the piece you are making. Then pull the mould and use it to make 2 halves of the egg and stick them together. Its alot of work for a static piece. Did you consider making a paper mache egg around some chicken wire and painting that. Just thinking the paper mache finish would look like the foil the kinder eggs come wrapped in.

The cheapest option would probably be plaster or plaster paris, but I've no idea experience with fibreglass and plaster moulds etc. Hang around, and no doubt you'll get a good few replies and tips and suggestions to the thread.

I would go with styrofoam. you could try this on a bit smaller scale.

Thanks so much for advice people. I know it's gonna be long winded but it's the smooth finish I'm after which is the only reason I'm doing it like this and that in turn gives me an oppurtunity to try out my air brushing skills. I just can't think if anything to give me a smooth finish like the fire glass but in turn have no idea how difficult it will be to work with

When you start, you should change this into a "work in progress" thread so we can see how things are going, and people might be able to give advice too.

If you really want fiberglass, you could look into techniques/videos for making surfboards and windsurfing boards. To make the egg hollow, you would just make a hole and pour some acetone to melt the foam away. Epoxy isn't affected by acetone, so you'll be left with just a thin outer shell. The video above would be a good way to make the core, which you would then laminate. Make a small scale model first to get the hang of it? You may need to do quite a bit of sanding to get a smooth finish.
