Help and advice new to modeling millenium falcon

Hi guys

I am very new to modeling i.e. this will be my first one. I am looking to purchase the AMT Millenium Falcon Cut Away model as I wanted something challenging that will keep me occupied for a while as my wife had informed me this will be my one and only......(doesnt want the house full of models!)

Anyway on point I want to get the model right and I would really like to put lights on it as I think it brings it to life. As I am a complete novice I am at a loss how to start it. Ive looked for the extra kits but being in the UK im struggling to find any, and they cant break the bank so need to do it on a budget.

Can you advise any cheaper lighting kits or even how I could make my own and what items I would need?

Dont know if I'm asking to much but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

How are you doing on getting kit?

You have some solid RPFers in the UK that are extraordinary modellers. Ralphee comes to mind... May check with your country mates about what resources you have locally.

Thanks for the reply. The actual kit I have seen on ebay and I am currently bidding on it. As to my local resources they are pretty poor to be honest, theres a old shop that specialises in train models and a newer one that only seems to stock remote control cars or snap together models.

Ill send Ralphee a message and see if he can point me in the right direction, cheers man

im currently attempting to build the very kit youre looking for.i decided to just glue the hull for simplicity.great aftermarket kits are available, like proper sidewalls, etc.most lighting kits are expensive,it depends on how involved you want to get.there are awesome builders on this forum, there advise and skills can help you alot!

Another thing you could do is use various model car parts and "found " items to detail your ship(your going to want to the kit is low on detail). Craft stores are great for inexpensive paints. Oh yeah, there is no cockpit to speak of! I had to scratchbuild mine. I bought some detail pieces from "starshipmodeler.com" fair pricing(yank dollars),good site try them.

Cheers for the reply mate, checked out that website couldnt seem to find any cockpit or improvement stuff, any chance you could post me a link of yours? just so I know what types of materials I would need, did you do it with card?

I did see some on Falcon Kits Home Page but think postage would be abit harsh and the sidewalls are a bit on the steep side.

Thanks

Trying to get a camera to post some pics. Yes I did use card to make cockpit.the only parts usable from kit were the floor and seats.you should look up what captain han solo has done with the mpc falcon on this forum.it will blow your mind!

I would not buy from Falcon kits, they ripped me off last year for quite a bit of money and then ignored my emails for about 8 months. I had to threaten a law suit before they would refund me for the products they never sent.

The owner gave me a sob story about cancer and blindness, I was very nice and let him rip me off for a long time. What makes me mad is my mother had cancer at the same time ( had it 14 years before also and recovered) and she just passed away a few weeks ago after an 11 month battle. Not once did she use her cancer as an excuse to hurt people or take advantage of them. The Falcon kit owner is slime, and a disgrace to all the great people out there battling cancer and other terminal diseases.

Hi Findingforever, my MPC is still a WIP, but I tackled the cockpit cone here:

I later discovered that I had made the diameter too large, so later in the thread I do it all over again, there are some measurements there also, which were expertly advised by Falcon expert Ozzy:

If i can help in any way, gimme a shout

I began reworking my 14 year old MPC kit 6 months ago and because the likes of Jaitea, ozzy, scratchy now I can't stop. It's a great kit as it looks good as soon as you've cut of those 5 mm or so on the sidewalls. (I just did it with an x-acto.) Then the more you scratch stuff on it the better it will look. I've messed up most of what I've tried to do on it. But then again it's supposed to look like a piece of junk.

I'd recommend this page:
Sci-Fi Group Build - Millennium Falcon

Thanks for the replies guys really appreciate it, I think step 1 when the kit arrives will be to rework the cockpit then adjust the sidewalls as per J's and Ozzys guides. Im not too bothered about it looking identical to the film model but the adjustments do make it look better.

I think the lights will have to go on the back burner for now too expensive and too difficult. Favourited all the links you guys have given me and thanks for the offer of further help J you may get bombarded with messages in the next few months :lol.

On a side note whilst bidding on the falcon Ive started bidding on the boba fet craft Slave 1...dont tell the missis!

Lost bids on both the Millenium Falcon and the Slave 1, prices got far too rich for my blood. Gutted

Well, don't give up yet, there's plenty of them out there if that's what you're after. I only paid 60 dollars American two years ago and that was from amazon. Most of the models ive built have been Internet finds, some expensive, some not. Two great hobby sites are in the Uk.frontier models, andcomet miniatures. Chin up. An, not over yet. Keep calm and hobby on! Cheers!

any ideas of where i can buy these model kits theres nothing but revell models or high cost ones from the usa or is it a case of just keep checking ebay etc

cheers
