Hellboy Rasputin Mecha Glove project?

Haven't located the exact brass, though I've confirmed that it's train brass. Likely fencing. there are three types of train brass. The brass in Tube number 3, the brass in tube number 4, and the brass that backs the rear hinge box behind the scorpion case. I've included a reference.

My idea about the insta-cast to finish the ring sides for the spinning ring worked like a charm today at lunch. I hot-glued the ring to an aluminum plate. I poured in some insta cast. It set in a couple minutes and at the end of the day, I chucked it into the lathe and cut the two holes to fit loosely around my 6" tube. The entire thing isn't perfectly round but I didn't expect it to and it's close enough.

Final pic is the ring tonight. Still to go: cutting the detents for the cages at the four spacer pieces (I'm not going all the way through- I only need registration). Priming the thing with some plasti-kote. Sanding and filling until it's ready for casting.

I sculpted a mummified frog from Super Sculpey, we'll see how it primes. Pix soon.

Thats looking great Adam.

Thanks for the tube pic. It will come in handy when i go to the train shop. Did you notice if the mesh at the end of tube 4 is the same mesh thats used in the turning ring resesses?

Just about ready for 3d printing! Modeled in seven separate pieces. I've already made a start on the cages.

Wow- you guys are really moving on this. Looks awesome. By any chance would you be willing to share the model file? I'll hopefully have my printer finished soon- I'm building the extruder right now.

That model is pretty damn impressive, is the final piece going to have the rotating interior? Just wondered because I thought that silver jobby on top was a servo casing.
Cheerio

The top casing is hollow, as is basically the entire thing, so electronics could be added. I haven't decided whether or not I will be doing so. (We can talk about sharing the 3d file a little later down the line.)

Adam is working at insane speed on this. I'm just sitting in front of the computer clicking a lot! :lol

Kick ass project, can't wait to see it finished and can't imagine this prop is going to be a breeze to make! The detail on that thing is incredible!

Fascinating project. I was at Kit Kraft in Studio City today and saw this. Not sure if it's correct, but looks pretty close:

Yeah, actually now that I've gotten home and looked at my photos, it seems pretty dead-on. And it looks like the center three strips rolled into a cylinder will give you the contents of tube 4 (according to Adam's diagram). And the two smaller sections on the side assembled in a triangular formation will give you the contents of tube 3.

Woo hoo! 1,000 posts. Never thought I'd see the day.

BTW, you can order that brass fence directly from Plastruct. Just go to Plastruct, Inc. - Home and type in "FEN-42" as the catalog number.

DON'T EVER PAINT SCULPEY WITH OIL-BASED SPRAY PAINTS!!!!! It only takes water-based acrylics. Or else it'll never cure. Sorry, just don't want to see your hard work go to waste.

Don't know about that. I've made HUNDREDS of Tiki Pendants from Sculpey, primed with automotive primer and base coated with flat enamels. Works great, no complaints.

You're lucky. I guess it all depends on the brand of paint, the size of the item, bake time, etc. But there's definitely oils in sculpey that can interact with certain paints. It's happened to me and others on another board I frequent. Sometimes the effects don't even show up until months later when the paint gets tacky.

Pay Dirt! That brass is spot on. I ordered 10 of them just now. This is exactly why I love the RPF. I've had the sculpey paint thing. Hell, I painted a vinyl mannequin hand with spray paint in 1986 and that sucker STILL isn't dry. I know because for some reason I still can't throw it away.

Now I'm gonna search plastruct's site for the brass on the back of the servo cover hing back from the scorpion (or should I say Vinegaroon) case.

YES! The RPF is like a huge detective agency. (I just wish my contributions would be more prominent- the downside of living in a small Scandinavian country is that you don't have easy access to a lot of the materials, bits and bobs used in our hobby.)

So... one package is enough for one glove then?

The holes look to be about 0.5-0.7mm (Don't know what the nearest imperial gauge would be.) The height of the entire piece, including border, looks to be around 38mm (give or take a couple mm). The mesh under the lid looks very close.

What are the approximate dimensions of the brass screen behind the scorpion box?

Here's the progress. I've got the tubes and tube bases about 90% done. The ring is coming along, I need to prime and fill it.
I got my lasercut gear ring and some motors today. I found these nice little 80 rpm 12v gearhead motors on ebay that are a little tall, but dead on in terms of width.
Faulhaber Motor + Gearhead + Encoder Combo - 92RPM 12V - eBay (item 230296397592 end time Feb-15-11 15:19:16 PST)

The tubes look good with the templates, though it's clear I need to re-draw the top one as one of the tubes is a little large.
