I said it on you junkyard thread and I will say it here; you are truly an artist. This has turned out better than I could have ever imagined. Keep up the amazing work

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

I really appreciate all the feedback!

I hunkered down and finished the duster this evening, other than weathering. I'm pleased with how it turned out:

Re: Hellboy Costume - Duster Jacket is Done!

I dropped off my boots at the shoe repair store today! I'll have them back in 2 weeks, and they'll add a little over an inch to my height and take away $190 from my wallet.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Duster Jacket is Done!

In between casting a mask today, I've been working on a lot of the little things.

- I have the tail 3/4 finished (sorry, no progress pics); I built a framework for it out of PVC, which I wrapped in foam, then wrapped in nylon, and am in the process of brush coating with silicone.

- I figured out and partially wired the electronics for the locator. Tomorrow I will make yet another trip to Home Depot to get the proper hardware to bolt the front to the back, and then I will give it a paint job. I hate electronics.

- Ordered the parts to build the reliquary and all the rosaries. Should have everything by next weekend.

- Ordered my contact lenses. I'm crossing my fingers that they arrive in time.

I will try to get some pictures tomorrow!

I struggled with the lenses as well. There's a lot of different directions you can go. You can do yellow lenses, you can do brown lenses with a yellow sclera background, you can go with an oversized lens.

The lens I really wanted to get was this one: Hellboy $154.99 ea.

But honestly I just couldn't afford over $300 worth of lenses right now, and I'm leery of getting sclera lenses as I've never worn them before.

The lens I ended up choosing was this one: Buy Palpatine Contact Lenses Online at Lens.com

It's more orange than I normally see people using, but I honestly think it's the right direction.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Duster Jacket is Done!

Locator beacon is done! I'm glad I finally figured out those electronics. Having never done anything like this before, they were really fighting me. Plus having to solder something that small proved to be a PITA. But I'm happy with the results. I put a small switch on the top to turn it on and off, and it has 4 screws in the back for changing batteries. I may do a black wash to it yet. Haven't decided.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Duster Jacket is Done!

Today is just ridiculously productive! I finished the rosary that hangs on his belt. The cross is a found item off of eBay. The chain and rosary beads were made by me. I started with wood balls which I drilled and inserted eye screws into, and then stained black. Then I added 2 links of chain between each ball.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Hair punching!

Can't wait to see this in person! I'll be in my Freddy & would love a pic together.

That would be a movie to see. Freddy VS Hellboy: The fight to the finish.

Since Freddy IS a supernaturally powered being if falls right up the BPRD's alley.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

More and more awesome. Can't wait to see the whole thing together!!

Thanks! As soon as I get the boots back, I'm planning to put the whole thing on to see how things look...assuming I get the RHOD done by then. Hoping to work on it this weekend.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

So I wasn't happy with the tail I had made. It just looked weird the way I built it. So I'm starting over. I bought a huge piece of foam from the fabric store ($40), and will start cutting it out tomorrow. Then it will need a LOT of shaping and smoothing, and then it will get a coat of rubber. On the first tail I made I used silicone to coat it, but I didn't like the way it looked. So I will pigment my urethane and give it a shot that way.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

WOW! What an amazing progress thread! I'm totally blown away by your sculpting skills and your tenacity to get this outfit completed!

Did a HellBoy myself, several years ago! It's a real crowd maker!

For my tail, I drew up a full size pattern and cut it out of red material. My mom stitched it together. (Thanks, Ma'!) We turned it insideout and I fashioned a long metal wire to run the length and placed it inside. Then we stuffed it tight with stuffing and sewed it closed. Made an internal loop at the top, so a belt could go through it. The tail can be bent to any shape we liked. (I couldn't "wag" it though!:lol) Painted it to look like red skin. Works great!

I'll post pics of it if you'd like.

You've done an outstanding job and this is a very entertaining thread! I'm going to watch this one!

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

Thanks!

I picked up my boots today. I'm very pleased with how they turned out. They were a bit pricey at a total cost of $220, but they give me the extra height I need. I still need to give them some scuffing with a fine grit sandpaper, but that shouldn't be too hard.

I also finished the shirt. I opted to use a burgandy 3-D fabric paint instead of having it tailored.

On tap for this upcoming weekend - the Right Hand of Doom!

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

So far today I have finished the reliquary. I began by getting a vial with decorative ends on Etsy. I made the bone out of Super Sculpey, and filled the vial with colored water before sealing. Not completely happy with it (the epoxy dripped inside, setting the bone in a fixed place), but it's such a minor detail I'm considering it good enough. I have about $30 invested in it.

Re: Hellboy Costume - Working on the small details!

So I officially gave up on making the Right Hand of Doom have movable fingers. I could have pulled it off with more time and the proper equipment. So now I'm in the process of reassembling it using WAY too much epoxy putty.

LESSON LEARNED: MAKE SURE YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH THE FEAT BEFORE CUTTING THE FINGERS OFF A $250 PROP.
