Harry Potter: Tales of Beedle the Bard

I've noticed an increase in the number of "Forum Sheriffs" lately. Or perhaps "Forum Vigilantes" is more appropriate, since they are inevitably self-appointed. A close cousin to the dreaded "Conan the Grammarian", the Forum Vigilante can usually be identified by the puny size of their baskets, the thinness of their skin, and the surpluss of free time necessary to battle the never ending danger of the "sematics".

Their mating call sounds very much like: "Oh--Tee! Oh--Tee!"

WHy is it there is always one jerk to ruin a perfect discussion about a very beautiful piece. It in fact IS a prop and from the looks to it a sought after piece for any Potter fan. Get a grip dude. Nobody likes a whiney little tattle tale. After reading this thread I'll try to find this for a friend who's a huge fan. If you don't like it go to another thread and quite making waves.

Let’s not get personal here, gentlemen. The brief debate between Tripoli and me was a simple clash of opinions, not exactly an unknown occurrence here. Although we perhaps got a bit heated, no true malice was intended, and neither of us lowered ourselves to name calling, which besides being a RPF rules violation, is just plain rude.

My husband just gave me the copy of this he got for me for Christmas after seeing this thread. It's a beautiful copy and I'm very much looking forward to reading it. As a big fan of both Harry's adventures, and Jo herself, I find it obvious that Master_Shake just hasn't bothered to actually look into the subject of JK Rowling before bashing her. She's done a lot of humanitarian work with the money she's brought in from Harry Potter, and donated a lot of time and money to children's charities in the UK and abroad.

She had talked to the fan who had that website, told him she was planning to publish a lexicon, and ASKED him to stop. He refused so she took the only course of action left to her: legal action.

Honestly, I wouldn't read it. Look at it, put it back in the box, and then buy one of the standard editions to read that. That's what I did. If you read the collector edition one it'll just start taking damage each time it's read.

I suppose it depends on why you bought it.

I'm honestly not interested in buying the collector's edition because it uses a font, but I think it'd be nice to have a fully handwritten version. With the knowledge I have from making grail diaries and such, I think it'd be fun to try sometime. I wonder where the cover decorations could be sourced from?

I got one for my wife for Christmas (which she loves) about 3 hours before amazon sold out. Checking the prices they're now going for on ebay, I'm very happy I got it when I did. I should have bought 3 in fact!

We're both going to read the collectors edition though. It hasn't been bought as an investment, it's been bought as a book. And I like to read books.

no just stories on the news. Her sueing the guy who created the potter encyclopedia page and winning. as if several billion weren't enough for that greedy cow.

Furthermore, had Master_Shake bothered to do any research whatsoever, he would've seen that every penny brought in from both editions of the Tales is going to charity to help children in need:

The Children's Voice Campaign

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is published by The Children’s High Level Group (CHLG), registered charity number 1112575, a charity co-founded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Emma Nicholson MEP to make life better for vulnerable children.

All net proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Children's Voice campaign.

The Children's Voice campaign is run by CHLG. It campaigns for child rights across Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe where over a million children and teenagers are growing up in institutions, often in unacceptable conditions. In most cases they are without adequate human or emotional contact and stimulation, while many only just survive without life's basics such as adequate shelter and food.

CHLG's Children's Voice campaign helps around a quarter of a million children each year through education activities; outreach work in institutions; and a dedicated telephone and email help line.

Oh, yes. Obviously, she's a very 'greedy cow' indeed.

I know this thread is almost dead, but I wanted to chime in. I'll say up front that I'm biased. I work on one of, if not the, biggest Harry Potter fan sites out there. I met my wife through that site. So yeah, I'm a bit of a Potter nerd. :$

My friend Melissa, who owns the website I work for, has actually spent time with JK Rowling at her house. Melissa's book about Potter just came out, and Jo actually wrote the preface. Jo doesn't care if you write a book about Potter, so long as the content of that book is original. What she doesn't want is someone taking her work, re-arranging it into chronological or other order, and publishing it. That's what Steve Vander Ark was doing. As noted, the proceeds from "Beedle" all went to charity. Jo has mentioned in the past that the proceeds from her encyclopedia would also go to charity. If another version of the same thing exists, it can be argued that this would interfere with sales of her book. I think anyone who sees her as a greedy cow 1) doesn't know anything about her and 2) is jealous of her success. Who here wouldn't love to have that much money?! God. The props I would have if I had that kind of cash!

And in a sad attempt to keep this on topic, I also have the delux edition and a regular paperback version to read (once my wife finishes it, that is). I agree with everyone else. I love the cover, packaging and everything. I was a bit disappointed in the jewels, though. I would think that, for $100, you could at least use some sort of non-precious or semi-precious gem. Little amethysts or something would have been better. Still, I think it's very well done and very close to the hand made versions she did.

Just a quick addendum: That is a common misconception. She didn't sue the guy (Steve Vander Ark), she sued the publishing company. I know, because Steve is a friend of mine.

And the book IS being published, in fact, first copies came out yesterday. The book was modified so that it used less of her direct quotations and descriptions and more "in Steve's own words". Rowling had no problem with this and did nothing to block the publication.

I'm not posting the name of the book or the publisher, because this isn't a plug, just an information correction. Now, I have a blaster to get back to work on.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I was just pondering if this book, the one that looks like the collector's edition, will make it into the last couple movies. Or perhaps a replica of the handmade version that Amazon bought?

I was hoping it would have been identical to the one in the last film, but its totally different.
