Harry Potter Book/Paper Prop Tutorials, Photos + Complete Advanced Potion Making

I originally got a sheet from here Hollander, but ended up scanning parts of it and then printed it out on my own double sided because the one from the site was only marbled on one side.

@ecl as promised i share some pics as soon as i started to work on my Cover for the APM book. If you want to post this in an separate thread please let me know. But i thought it might be of interest (kind of "how to") for other as well ;) Hope it is ok!?

First off, what my goal is to have to book bound in a linen cover, just like the original.

Therefor i simply splitted your great "cover work" (see page 1) into 2 pieces to get it
run through my A4 laser printer. I used a natural linen / bookbinding cloth - light beigh.
Cutted it out and got the 2 pieces back again, using a self-adhasive linen fabbric ("Filmoplast"). I have made the cut at the area were i wanted to make the "destessing/aging", so it should'nt be a problem at the end.

Here is what it looks so far:

And a detail shot of the linen:

What happened on general is that the colors faded out and some details gone lost. But for the very firs test i am pretty happy :)

Will give it a try to add the "silver" on new a pcs of linen, with heat-transfer foil. Hope this work and then will try to get the colors back on cover.

Hope you like it so far.

By the way, does anybody have already some experience with LASERPRINTS on a bookbinding-linen and is willing to share some knowledge? Whould be great. Thanks.

Murdoc that looks really great! I really like the texture of the linen. Looks very similar to one of the references I've seen.

There were several versions of the potion book, each made with slightly different materials. I've seen one like yours with the linen texture, and others that have the fabric pattern printed on a smoother paper surface (even satin-like and looks likes a dull shine under certain light), also a few on different fabrics. Pretty interesting with all the different variations, and each has it's own character. I think it's pretty normal for the detail to be kind of lost on the linen texture, maybe coating it with some kind of primer might help with the fading.

Here's a shot of one of the more linen looking versions from the film:

As you can see the details look more bumpy/grainy also with this material. Nice work you did with yours and it's interesting to see someone trying different materials.

I would be interested in hearing how the foil works on that. My experience is the foil is very picky about which surface it likes to work with. Would be excellent if it does!

Thanks for your feedback Sonicfreak and ecl.

@ecl: the shown pics is exactly what i had in mind ;) The silver foil thing is working
with the linen as well, but in the same way as the laserprint in general is working. Meaning
a more faded out kind of "style". I will try to catch up the result with the cam.

I got a better result with the laserprint using different a driver setting. The linen does have about 180gr in weight and thats what i used in the setting so far, paper/carton + 165gr.
I now print with "heavy" paper 100 to 165gr, which turn out better. I do not want to reducea this setting further as i do not want to risc any problems with the printer itself.

Pics to follow as soon as possible ;)

@MurdocXXL Again, your doing amazing Artwork! I like the look of the cover.. maybe the color should be a little bit stronger, but this material seems to be the right one :D

Thanks Vossart :)

Here is the result with the silver foil. It worked pretty well... the black print on the linen did came out the same way as the color print, meaning faded out and less detailed. That
leads to the effect, that the silver foil not got stucked on the entire print areas. At the end it matches pretty good to the general appearance. Already have a pre-distressed optic in general. Enough words....here are the pics:

And the first and second print in comparison:

As stated before the 2nd print came out better, due to a diff. driver setting. The pic above does not judge correctly. It looks better in real. You propably see the differnce at
the pot at the front (left 1st - right 2.).

As i already bound it to the book, it now needs some further distressing ;)

Very nice! It has a nice look to it and should be even better when distressed a little! Looking forward to seeing more.

I went to the craft store yesteday, and found some cloth paper that can be used in a regular printer. I bought some and may try it out too. The texture is more fine than the linen, but could be interesting.

Many thanks ecl :)

I will post pics after the final distressing!

Congrats to your find. Looking forward to see some pics ;)

Finally got the aging done on my APM Book.... Here is the result:

Hope you like it.... many thanks to "ecl" for making this possible. Without his
work, my APM book would not exist.

Murdoc, the book turned out really good!! I like the way the worn parts on the edges of the cover look frayed. What a nice book to have in a collection :) Nice photo too.

Many thanks for you kind feedback vossart and ecl :) Realy happy that you like it.
Hope to motivate somebody else to post there results ;)

Been working on a copy of the Adv Potion interior for someone on the forum, complete with notes on every single page. Still some more to do on it. I will take more photos when it's done!

@Jhadha: I used some screen references of the real prop and used that as a guide for formatting the pages. All the images and text were from old 16-18th century works about alchemy and potion stuff I found around the internet. All I did was fit it into that format...about 300 pages of it. Lots of stuff!
