Han's ANH GK DL-44 Blaster

Well I've asked these questions, about these blaster before, but since it was always in one thread, I never really got a clear answer (or any answer in some cases) , so I'm braking them up into more then one thread this time.

Ok, I know the gun itself is not supposed to be black, but rather have a "blacked" or "Blued" look. (kind of a real dark gray) Does anyone have any suggestions on what paint/technique, to use for this.

Also, and this is my big question. ARE THE ADD ONS (SCOPE MOUNT, GREABLIES, ETC.) SUPOSTED TO BE PAINTED BLACK, OR ARE THEY THE SAME COLLOR AS THE GUN? (That dark gray color) I'm not asking how to paint them, this is purely about the color. I've never been able to tell, and since I want to get these done in the next month, or so, I really need to know.

Also, on this blaster, Do I just remove the foreword sight, and install the flash suppresser right over the barrel, or do I need to remove some of the barrel like on the other DL-44s?

Thanks
Jason

If you want movie accurate, you remove quite a bit of the barrel.

I liked mine with the long barrel look so I didn't take off very much.

I believe the mount was completely custom so it's painted.
The scope came painted. The grill was probably a heat sink that was made black anodized.
Suppressor - parkerized?

No idea if the barrel was cut down. I haven't built mine yet.
The barrel is barely visible inside the suppressor cone on page 89 of Chronicles.
I'd grind off the front sight, fit the suppressor to the correct length according to the side views of the gun and then rotate it to the same view as the Chronicles pic. If it sticks out too much cut it down.

So, just to be clear, by "painted" you meen black. Corect?

Yes black.
The black finish of the mount is a little deeper than the blued (or similar finish) of the MGC body.

Use Krylon Semi-Flat Black for all your blasters. It's not too flat(dull) and it's got enough sheen to give a suttle satin look to it. It drys fast, resists fingerprints and doesn't run. It also cures nicely. That way you can "play" with your props. :)

Yeah, but if you look closely at the pics of the real blaster, it's not really blacke. (at least not as black as the add-ons) It's more "blackend" or "blued" Kind of a very dark gray.

I think black looks better, but I'm trying to get them correct.

Well, honestly, I don't know what you mean by "correct." Correct would be getting a Mauser that is blued and then adding the parts to it like they did in the movie. I don't know if you can make it 100% "correct" by painting a kit.

Just do it the way you like it, that most captures the look onscreen.

I know black and white pictures don't help much, but remember that the flash hider is Pakerized dark grey and the grips are dark brown wood :)

Here is one (pre-complete weathering, sorry) that I built a while ago on a MGC with repro grips and the wrong scope:

I get that mine wont be 100% accurate. I just can't afford it. :( But, I'm a perfectionist, so I'm going to get it as close as my budget allows. (and still not be happy with it. :lol ) I put all sorts of work in to my props, and I always here the same thing. "That's way off". So, I do my best to get it as "right" as I can.

Thanks for the pics. I'm not worried about my flash suppresser, it's a real one, and it's already the correct color. My heat since is anodized black. (I forget who made it, but it's on of the older ones, done by one of the guys that was a mod for a while) My scope mount is one of Bowjunkies (or however you spell that) It's really nice, right now, it's flat black. (actually a very, very, very, dark gray, I wish I knew what paint he used, it would be nice for the body of the gun.). I don't have my scope yet, but I'm not worried about that, 'til I get the rest of the gun done. I have my Denix stripped down, and I still need to drill the holes. (I'm REALLY nervous about doing the drilling. I always mess that kind of thing up. :( ) I have removed and filed down the hammer and trigger pins, and am pretty good at getting them back in, so once the drilling is done, I'll put those back in, and fill the holes to make it look more like a MGC. I also need to fix the hammer to make it look more correct.

I would just "blue" the Denix, but since I'm going to be filling the pin holes with bondo, I would have pink dots. :lol I may do a blueing/paint combo. You know, "Blue" the gun, then paint over the pink with a close color, and make it look like it's weathering.

I was going to suggest blueing the gun but , you're right... you have to match the bondo....or, how about filling the holes with propoxy 20 or another metal putty?that cured to a grey finish which is pretty close and might take the blueing too...I haven't tried it though.

This is what I've used...

Here's one I made with various parts supplied thanks to the talents of the various RPF parts artists....

Where do I get "propoxy 20 or another metal putty"? I've never heard of those, but they sound great.

I've used "Perma Blue" and "Aluminum Black", I I really like both of them. (except for the smell)
