Han Solo in Carbonite: A novice build

Hi QCWolf,

For what it's worth at this point, I was able to hang my HIC on drywall with simple 200b rated toggles. I used 5 of them to mount a french cleat to the wall. I then used a 2x3 and L brackets to secure the cleat to the HIC. My HIC has a solid plywood back but I'm sure your bracket system will handle the weight just fine. My HIC weighs in at 119 lbs. The 3rd pic with the LED strip is a side shot that shows the cleat on the wall attached to the 2x3 that is bracketed to the back of the HIC. Your hollow mount should definitely work especially if you were able to screw into the studs. If not, then I would recommend the toggles. I have metal studs so I had to rely on the toggles handling the weight.

Awesome Build!!!

Thanks for the compliment and ideas. Yours looks amazing! The solid back is fantastic.

The TV mount worked out great. It took the weight and was super easy to install. The top of the box is at a height of 8'-2" and the bottom is about 17" off the ground.

Great Job! Next build you have to change the title to Expert build though! I know I want one now.

Thank you so much! If you have the means, I highly recommend this build. It's been so fun and rewarding.

Wow! That looks awesome! I really like the spotlight on the top. Great job!!

Thank you. That light was the cheapest part of the whole build. Ha!

Thanks man. I really didn't know what I was doing when I started. I learned a lot about many different aspects of prop building with this project.

Awesome, awesome, awesome...

Thank you! I'm so happy with the way this turned out in the end. There are many things I would do differently if I had it to do over. I'm sure I could cut the build time in half if I just made a few small tweaks.

It looks like a great learning experience for sure... I'm about to start the build and appreciate your trial & error so much! Between your orange backlighting, the panel electronics and the overhead lamp, you've got such a gorgeous and impressive display. The licensed iterations of this prop look like such clumsy toys compared to what you've put together! You must love it every time it catches your eye. It's really something to be proud of!

I really appreciate your compliments. Working on this project has tremendously boosted my prop making confidence. Late last night I found myself just standing and staring at it. I still can't believe it's completed. I had doubts about getting it done the way I wanted it. There were frustrations for sure, but in the end, I think that by just diving in head first everything worked out. If you can't hide it, feature it!

i love the tv mount idea! the back lighting is awesome as well!

Thank you! The one I used is a "Cheetah" mount. It was less than $30 from Amazon and it seems to work great so far. I was originally going to use a more expensive mount but I wanted to try something a bit more budget minded. I like this one because of its slim profile. I'm sure there are better solutions and better mounts, but this one worked for me.

yes i am not afraid of the budget brackets either. i have my girlfriends 50" on a 45 dollar setup, its pretty solid. never thought of using it to hang a han though! ingenious!

I wish I could take credit for the idea. In my year long research period, I came across someone who had done something similar and it seemed like a simple solution to the problem. I have had good luck with the installation and I would recommend it as a wall-hanging solution. Simple and effective.

We hung about 20 screens at our office building with those same Cheetah mounts from Amazon. They've been fine and sturdy for a couple years now. I'm with you, there's not much in a more expensive mount unless you are using the articulation constantly to move it.

This thread has pretty much inspired me to take on a HIC as my first build now that I've moved into a new house and got my garage all set up. Looks awesome.

I'm glad this thread has inspired you to build your own HIC. Several years ago, I wanted to build one but I was too chicken to start. I did several smaller props first and finally built up the confidence to attempt it. I am so glad I did. Good luck with your build and be sure to post your own progress. The RPF has been such an amazing resource and this community has been so supportive.

I love the effect the USB light has on it. It might as well be hanging in the Hutt's palace.

Outstanding Sir! It came out perfect, congrats, you should be proud!

Thank you!

Thanks, man! I like that feature too. It's attached in a way that I had not planned on, but the attachment point is in a place that is impossible to see so it doesn't bother me that I had to drill into the top.

I'm getting close to the end of my build before final paint, but the texturing is driving me nuts and hard to get just right. I just got my touch ups in sanding done last night and stood it up to get an overall look and for the most part am happy with it, but I still feel I need to add a little more wood glue to the textured surface to smooth some of the more sharp details out. And thoughts overall? I know it's never going to be 100% perfect and I think that's what bugs me, hahauploadfromtaptalk1431190917556.jpg
