Han Solo ANH - No Budget

Ok i am looking to do a Han Solo costume for halloween this year and I want it to be as accurate as possible

I read the guide on here, and I saw a lot of modifications of existing clothing, however I wouldnt even mind getting something made from scratch versus modifying existing clothing. I will be paying a seamstress/costume maker to modify anything that i purchase regardless.

So i was hoping that I could get some top quality recommendations for:

Boots: I think MotorCowboy seems to be the best for ANH, but would love to have someone prove me wrong they are expensive...but seems like worth it. Can anyone tell me if they are well done? Are they Comfortable?

Blaster: I seem something on blast tech but i cannot tell if that is even a real site...will be wearing it in a holster

Holster: Who would be good to consign to make this from scratch, my main concern is having it done properly to ensure proper weight distribution so it is COMFORTABLE

Underwhite Shirt: It seems a stretchy material is there someone that makes a shirt specifically like this? I have ordered from Magnoli clothiers before...they make great stuff...is there anything better

Vest: Is it better to mod the Dawn vest or have someone custom make it

Pants: So many questions here...anyone have any luck with someone customizing for them

Hey there and welcome. I'm making a Solo ANH as well to join the Rebel Legion.

Check out this link. It is a pretty comprehensive archive of photos and has many links to ebay for different products, such as boots.

Rebel Legion :: View topic - Han Solo Archive and Links

The MotorCowboy boots are very expensive. The boots seem to be either vintage equestrian riding boots or german officer boots. Either ones would work (as long as they are knee high) but IMO the equestrian boots are closer.

Blaster: Yes Blast Tech is a real site and they make nice parts for the blaster, as well as a complete blaster for $20 more. There are a bunch of options for this though:
Hasbro toy painted, Wilco models (resin), Master Replicas (pricey)

Holster: Try MP Filmcraft or Wade Egan Both are nice and both cost ~$350. You can make one yourself, but it involves wet forming leather, cutting, etc

As far as a made shirt, I believe Magnoli is the only one who specifically makes this. I am using a cotton/poly blend material to make mine.

Vest: The Dawn Anderson falcon jacket pattern can be modded, but the only thing the seamstress can use is the basic pocket design. The pocket shape and size are completely different.

Pants: the originals were made of a brushed denim material (according to Dressing a Galaxy, I believe). Your best bet is custom. Bloodstripes can either be embroidered or you can use some of those iron on/transfer ones.

CostumeBase costumes can be modified to look decent, but you are better off starting from scratch. CostumeBase is exactly that: a costume. Not very durable from what I've heard.

Here is another reference site:

Kay Dee Designs - Star Wars Han Solo Costume

This is not an easy costume to accurately put together. The rebel legion lists it in the intermediate category.
Have fun and ask a lot of questions. I've learned so much in the two months I've been working on mine.

Magnoli makes most of the soft parts of this costume and they look very good(he even makes the 2 colored gloves).

Model A

The only thing I don't like about the magnoli stuff is that the blood stripes look off. They are too big. Or at least they seem to be.

Overall though, for a one stop shop it is clearly the best option. Great quality.

so, no budget means you want to spend close to a grand on it?

wheres the "here's an alternative for this!" etc. i found a pretty cool chef shirt at good will the otherday. its not double breasted like they usually are.

I have a pair of Han Boots from Motor Cowboy and Caboots. Both are nice. I am planning to sell off my MotorCowboy boots though because I personally like the Caboots better.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I agree with GoneSolo about looking on ebay for the vintage equestrian riding boots. I just purchased a great pair for less than $100. It took awhile to find a pair that would fit but it was well worth the wait.

I’m also working on a Han Solo holster at the moment. This holster is designed to fit the old laser tag blaster that was sold about ten years ago and is made from 6 oz. leather. Unfortunately, I may end up purchasing the MP Filmcraft buckles since I have not had the time to have the buckles made. The Solo holster and blaster will most likely end up for sale in the Junkyard in a few weeks if you are interested in them.

If you are looking for a cheaper route for the blaster you could use the old Kenner style blaster with a new paint job. Here is a holster I made similar to Luke Skywalker’s in Empire Strikes Back that will fit the toy blaster. Let me know if you have any questions about the boots or holsters.

Actually, the pants shown on our site were our first run with the new embroidery machine, so it was a bit tricky. Luckily, these pants were a larger size, so proportionately, the stripes worked fine. The next pair will be smaller though.

If you're looking for a blaster, I strongly recommend looking for a resin version. The resin blasters out there look extremely accurate and if you're going to be wearing it in a holster, it's going to be soooooo much lighter & more comfortable. A few pounds of metal strapped to your thigh gets heavier than you think after a few hours in costume. Not to mention it banging & bumping into things. With a good paint job-- the resin blasters look just as accurate & I guarantee you'll be much happier at the end of the day. Even the toy blasters can look pretty good with a couple of minor mods and a re-paint.

Accurate Denix conversions from Blastech and other sites are made to be displayed on a wall, not to be worn in a holster.

Ok, I did a "low budget" Solo ANH years ago that still works pretty well. It's certainly a damnsight better than what most people on Halloween will be wearing, which is basically the only time I wear it (I don't go in costume to cons, although I've actually only been to one con). Anyway, here goes.

I'll start by saying that I know my out fit is NOT "SA" (screen accurate). You give that up when you go budget, unless you're willing to spend a lot of time. I was not, when I put this together.

Boots

Search Ebay. DO NOT get the "German Officer" boots that pop up. These are typically surplus east German officer boots with a treaded sole. They're too low. Only about 12-13" high and you need something that comes up to the top of your calves. I recommend RUSSIAN officer boots which are usually around 17-18" high. You can probably find 'em for around $60-120, depending on your luck and how well you hunt. These boots will not be perfect. They'll look "flat" and they can easily be flattened down on the uppers. But, they round out when you wear them. Still, the shaft of the uppers won't have that perfect cylindrical look to them. It'll look more "wrinkled" It still works, though, in my opinion.

Pants

I used a pair of blue Dickies work pants. They fit just fine. For bloodstripes, I basically took red hem facing, cut it up, and folded it over some blue fabric (I forget what kind). I glued that onto the fabric, and then had a tailor sew the fabrick onto the pants themselves. In my opinion, the hem facing is too wide, and I spaced my bloodstripes out too much, but maybe you can find similar material that works better.

The pants cost about $30 or so. Tailor costs depend on where you are. If you're good with a sewing machine (or know someone who is) this may not be an issue.

Shirt

Originally, I went with a JK2 shirt. I later got in touch with Corellian Exports. Dunno if they're still around. DO NOT wear a white button down shirt. You'll look like a *******.

As I recall, the shirts ran between $60-100.

Vest

I found an old black BDU jacket, and used a seam ripper to remove the sleeves completely. I hung on to them for spare material just in case. I then removed the pockets and brought the vest up a bit, and had it tailored so that it was less boxy. I had the pockets re-attached on the front.

The BDU jacket was relatively cheap from an Army/Navy store. I think it went for around $40-50? Something like that. It's been a while. You may be able to find a cheaper alternative. My vest also does not have the back panel pockets. I don't think I had enough material from the sleeves to make those work. Most people don't notice, though.

Gloves

Guy named Russ did a run of those on here YEARS ago (took forever, too). Ran me about $60. I'd go with Magnoli and save yourself the headache. After that, I haven't paid for a "project" on here since.

Blaster

Tons of dealers out there, or find yourself a Denix Mauser and a kit and put it together yourself. I got mine from Boba Debt.

Belt

Got mine from a guy on here back in '99 named Jason. Went by the handle of Dash Rendar. I got, literally, the last belt he ever made. So...um....don't bother trying to find him. There are dealers around. You can try to manufacture your own, too, or search Ebay. If you want names of folks, give a yell and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction.

Droid caller & Greebleis

You can probably find a makeshift flashgun online (Leitz maybe). Or try to find someone here who does resin versions. I recommend a resin version, personally, but that's also because my droid caller clip doesn't really hold the thing in place. You can find other belt tools and such from these folks as well. Or make your own out of dental floss containers and some electronics bits. You can almost certainly find a micronox cylinder somewhere (just be sure you bleed it dry before using it on your belt!).

Tips for Costuming

Here's a few things I'd recommend. First, when you get a gunbelt, make sure it has multiple snaps for the leg strap. You want the thing to move some, yeah, but ideally not completely flop around. Try to find one with a solid clip for your droid caller. Mine is a rather flimsy clip that never quite holds things in place. If possible, try using some sort of adhesive to hold the droid caller in place or find a good way to wedge it in.

Your boots may need to be stretched at the calves. You can find boot stretchers online, if need be.

The gunbelt and blaster are easily the most expensive parts of the costume, depending on how accurate you want 'em to be. You can always get a hasbro toy gun, though, or try your hand at making your own. Denix mausers are under $100, I think.

Regarding the pants, one of the biggest pet peeves I had when first trying on my costume was their tendency to "blouse" at the knees after you walk around. I solved this problem using one method, but there are one or two others you can try. For me, I fold the pants up at the ankles so they're tight on my ankles and lower calves. I then put on a pair of men's dress socks (thin ones) OVER the pants. This helps avoid the pants catching on the boots as you put your feet in, and riding up. Another option would be to sew some kind of stirrup into the bottom so that your feet will hold them down. If you're too cheap to do that, though, the socks thing works great. What the hell. Maybe Han did that himself. We never DID see him with his boots off...

For the shirt, try to get it tapered a bit. I have relatively broad shoulders by comparison with my waist, which means that shirts tend to be boxy on me. This means they blouse out at the waist quite a bit, which can look funny peeking out from under your vest. A tailored/tapered shirt will help some here.

Hope that helps. I'll try to find pics to post later.

I agree with GoneSolo about looking on ebay for the vintage equestrian riding boots.

I was watching those, but since I just purchased some of those Russian parade boots and the price skyrocketed at the end, I stayed away. Great boots though. :thumbsup

That makes sense. I can't wait to see them.

When I first decided to tackle this costume, I didn't fully realize the magnitude of it (to complete a very accurate one). I will admit that I can't sew and that makes it tough. There are a lot of subtle nuances like riding seam and pin tuck in the pants. I guess it is taken for granted since its a cloth costume. At this point, I think it would have been easier to build a stormtrooper kit, though that's not as cool. :love

The costumebase pants can be modified nicely by a tailor if you can find some good bloodstripes. I don't recommend Kerezman. They're nice stripes, but I think I was lucky to actually receive them. I attached stirrups to the bottom of my pants and they work great. It's a pretty simple mod, especially since it doesn't have to be pretty.

I really need help on the gun...I am unclear on the difference between a resin and metal gun, and who makes the best one - there seem to be alot of great choices for the gun

How much lighter and comfortable will the resin gun be?

I will be wearing it for a 4+ hours at a time for a party, however if it gets some rough treatment or dropped i dont want it to be smashed into dust

Where is the best place to get the droid callers...is correllian exports still around?

Going with MP for the holster...that guy does fantastic work, and will go with MC for the boots...they are very expensive, however if they can customize them for me the comfort will be worth it

I like Indy for the pants and the vest, but im not 100% on the shirt, on the site it looks like a tunic or blouse, however on the movie screens the shirt seems like a thin stretch knit...anyone have the falcon shirt that can comment?

Or maybe its more of a linen rough hughspun deal...advice and experience here would be great

hard to say...

One other thought...

han has a belt on as well as the holster...does anyone have a good picture of the belt he has on underneath his holster? Is there anything special about this belt?

A resin gun will be lighter than metal. The resin gun that Wilco Models made for me is about two pounds. I've read that full metal blasters are between eight and ten pounds. Like you said, comfort is key. Here is a picture of a Wilco:

I apologize for the lack of detail, but I can assure you that it is a fantastic piece. For about $50 you can get just the kit, but he paints for an extra $25. Well worth it IMO. If it gets scratched up, the resin under is black, so you won't have to worry about white/yellow resin showing thru.

Correlian Exports is around and they do offer all of the tools for the belt. But for about the same price (at least for the Droid caller), you can go to doopydoos, from the UK. They offer paint services for the caller and their quality is top notch.

I don't have the Magnoli shirt, but I am using a cotton/poly blend fabric in a cream color. It is stretchy. If I remember correctly, it is this one:

Sew Classic Knits- Ponte Roma Solids MANY COLORS : fashion apparel fabric : apparel fabric : fabric : Shop | Joann.com

The pants belt is a three hole belt like this:

Three Hole Leather Belt

All you have to do is remove the center prong, leaving the ones on top and bottom.

that sounds perfect for the blaster...exactly what im looking for and will spare 300+ in cost

How do i contact wilco models

i didnt see anything for them online / ebay

doopy seems good for the droid caller...what about the other pieces that go in hans belt...is there anyone that offers a paint job for the other pieces other than just the resin kits?

thanks again for all the help...i want to have everything mapped out before the spending spree :)

i forget the site but there is a place that sells blood stripes, both red/blue, yellow/brown and blue/brown for about 20 bucks.

the shirt is a 70's style shirt.

the boots are motocycle cowboy or german officer boots/black cavalry boots

the pants are pretty specific, with a riding seam up the back.

the belt can be made for about 30 bucks or so from leathers bought at tandy leather and a hasbro blaster works fine.
