You certainly argue a lot for someone who doesn't care.Frankly, I don't really care if it's scratched on or not. Refractive index's canceling each other out making it perfectly clear or not. That only shows a bottle in pristine condition. Now, if it's all scratched up, the light hitting those depressions should cause distortion. If what rundown said is correct it seems more probable then taking a blade to the helmet, and looks more like some kinda explosion could cause that anyways.
Care to prove that the depressions would cause distortion? It would be really interesting to know how you magically change the refractive index of a material by altering its shape.
rundown said "battle damage turned into an artistic terrifying mark", which would mean that he did take something to his helmet in order to make the final shape. Or did you expect the blast or whatever actually made a skull shape? That would be one awesome grenade.
