I thought i'd share with my fellow Halo fans these bad @$$ armors. I took these day 1 at E3. I have close ups of each suit, so if you're curious let me know if you need close ups for your own creation.

The statues are very impressive. The creator had mentioned that the statues were milled out of foam and then additional details were scultped. I wonder how much of the figure was milled from foam using a CNC machine. Maybe the CNC machine is the new way to go about making suits? :)

I think the reason we don't see much CNC work is it can be much more expensive than sculpting or pep or something similar. But I think it's a process that's a lot quicker, too.

I'd love to see more pics!

The cost of the CNC machine may be expensive at first, but if it can pump out that quality of work within a week, you can practically pay for the machine itself by selling milled suits with a little added detail work/paintjob.

Had me self a NerdGasm! What is the one with skullface called? anyone know?

The guy with the skullface is called Emile.

Yep, I saw these unveiled via Halo Waypoint today . The company that made them is Idea Planet Inc. from Austin Texas. I laugh about how theres always this little dance around the terminology whenever rapid prototyping is used for this artisic stuff. They refer to it as 'sculpting' when really all they do by hand is surfacing and detailing the forms after the mills prototype it out. Gel coat, sand, and presto, artwork! Think of it as 'rich man's pepakura'. ;)

I did the same work for the Smithsonian on their bronze triceratops skull back in 2001.. a rapid prototyped model that had to be redetailed inch by inch, but we had to section it back apart, cast it in metal, weld it back together then hide all the seams.

If you haven't seen, theres a video interview with a represenative of the company, Johnny Fisk out today:

YouTube - Halo: Reach E3 Noble Team Statue Artist Interview

And for the record rapid prototyping is very commonly used by industry to quickly do what we hobbyists spend months or years doing. And as the tools have become more widely distributed to the public more people are getting access to use them, even building their own axis mills at below manufacturers costs. Several people here have access to these machines or own their own.

I was told years ago that this was the way of the future and that sculptors like me should stand aside, but still we're here co-existing like neanderthals among homosapiens.. I'll hold onto these abilities as long as time marches on, I've spent my life on this, what else can I do?

What were we talking about... oh, yeah E3.. neat statues they made, huh? They've got a whole lot of soul for milled foam, eh?

Guess they'll probably end up at Bungie or Microsoft HQ's eventually... I can't imagine them being manufactured and sent out to retail as was suggested.

;)

I also saw some people without badges hanging around E3 wearing a certain helmet and a certain suit. LOL. LOLOL why go to E3 and you dont have a badge? LOLOL

Looks like they have finally done female armor. Cant wait for somebody to sculpt/pep that. Would love to have a suit for my wife.

Wow, I hope they have that set up at Comic-Con. I would love to see it in person. So amazing seeing the full sized pieces. Thanks for the video link and all the information.

If you're refering to who I think you're refering to I ask you now to stop. I don't want drama in my thread.

They are really opening up the floodgates by allowing anyone to create their own style of armor, I love it.

I love how the female one has one robotic arm!

Something about these looks really static to me, I think it's the uniform matte finish, nothing is glossy, like the visors, they should shine. I guess it could be the camera?

not to defend my camera or nothing, cause i have a pretty decent camera (LOL) but the armors were a bit flat in color in person. but still cool

Just keep in mind (according to what we've seen of the videos so far...) that the "skull" on the faceplate is just a paint effect in the game/videos. The sculpture looks like the skull was carved into the faceplate.
