HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread (helmet rebuild begins on p.19)

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Now that you mention it, I do remember reading about your whole casting of Red vs. Blue, hence why your armour is "light red". That's alot of pulls from your moulds. An Agent Washington would be very nice, but are you going the whole hog and using the Halo 3 patterns instead? Can't remember if the rest of the crew changed their armour too...

There's a joke going around about Obama's own flavour of Ben & Jerry's ice cream - "Yes PeCan". Along the same lines but for the other side could be "Tali-banana".

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

...are you going the whole hog and using the Halo 3 patterns instead?.

In Reconstruction, Caboose is wearing a Mk5 (Halo 1) helmet with the Halo 3 armor while the rest are wearing normal Mk6 (Halo 3) armor. The only real differences I've noticed between Halo 2 and Halo 3 armor are some details on the helmet and the shape of the handplates. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

It's not much of an update, but this afternoon I was back in my shop:

While I was in there, I hacked apart my old bicep armor pep model, mushed up a bunch of clay, and then made the outside strip of upper arm and shoulder:

More to come sooner or later.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

I'm still fine-tuning the bicep armor and I don't have any pics of that yet. At the same time, I've been tinkering with these parts:
3905738541_ab1596324c_o.jpg

I've also been upgrading the space diaper:
3905738479_9c3056d71e_o.jpg

3905738417_8eec2ae80e_o.jpg

There's a few other things I've been tinkering with, but the thing I'm most proud of is my visor progress. I've never liked the look of the doubled-up motorcycle visors. They only really bend in one direction and the Master Chief's visor is more bubbled. I've been trying to find a way to match this compound curve and I think I've finally cracked the code:
3911179015_3f17d3a6d9_o.jpg

I'll need to grind the helmet opening down a bit more to fit it better, but I think it'll do:
3911178905_a4a6326371_o.jpg

The visibility isn't perfect, but you have to sacrifice a few things if you want it to look the part. Here's a shot of the well-lit shop through the visor (I'd feel comfortable driving while wearing this helmet):

I haven't perfected the methodology for making and metallizing the visor yet. When I do I'll try to explain it.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Mad props for cracking the visor mettalization connundrum.. thats a sweet looking visor there! Any plans to implement the recess pattern?

Either way, that the best color and shape match to date.. Cheers!

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

For the recess pattern I'm thinking I'll use a clear adhesive vinyl cutout laid on top of the formed visor. That should look just about right. I'm also not 100% thrilled with the color. I think it needs to be a bit more yellow to match the in-game model.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

I've seen the clear vinyl applique done to the front by someone over at the 405th, and it looked excellent. I'm sure it'll look very good with your visor.

The mettalic orange you have is much closer than the yellow gold visors most of us use.. it's still a major improvement even if you concede it's not perfect.

Anyhow.. it's a breakthough. Can't wait to hear something about the technique.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Finally a post with some decent pictures.

Here's a buddy of mine (who will be Grif whenever we finish this project) modelling the upper arm armor:

This is me test fitting my cold-cast aluminum chest and ab armor:

Here's my current progress on the calf armor (the tricep armor is in the foreground):
3942965166_09bddc2563_o.jpg

I've done a lot of fairing in the last week or so. Here I am working on the forearms:
3942504742_e27cf3ea9f_o.jpg

And finally, here I am test fitting my ab plate v2.0 and two of the six pieces that will make up the space diaper:
3941725153_8b223318a1_o.jpg

I've also done a bit of fairing on my MkV helmet:

Comments appreciated. Stay tuned for further updates.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

I've been doing some fairing on the bits in progress:
3946598477_815e27d522_o.jpg

I even went so far as to prime them to see how much work is left. The upper arm armor looks pretty good. A few more minutes and I should be able to mold up the tricep and bicep parts:
3946598825_01c2b50338_o.jpg

I'm pretty happy with the forearms too, but the calf armor has a long way to go:
3946599073_e80b715716_o.jpg

So at this stage I'm almost ready to make molds of the butt plate, cod, and belt parts. I still have to fabricate the thighs and belt boxes.

Stay tuned. More to come.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Thank you all for the compliments once again. I did some more work on my gauntlets since the last update and had a friend snapping pictures all the while so I can explain my scoring technique.

Here I am using a laser line from my jigsaw to make sure I'm making straight lines:
DSC03592.jpg

Once that's done, I cut along the lines using a hacksaw:
DSC03598.jpg

Using the hacksaw cuts as a guide, I make the cuts wider and deeper using a spare jigsaw blade:
DSC03600.jpg

Here's the top of the gauntlets as they look right now:

And here's a comparison shot of the bottom against a reference image from the gallery:

Clearly they need more work, so there's more to come. Stay tuned...

i would love to know your methdology when you get it done.....cant wait for that

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

Not much of an update, but the front half of the space diaper is just about ready for molding:

Also shown in this picture are the tricep and bicep parts as well as a detail for the outside of the gauntlets.

Stay tuned.

Please tell me this has a collection pouch :love

Please tell me this has a collection pouch :love

No, but I was toying with the idea of a funnel and drain tube...

Ever since I nearly slipped a disc trying to fold myself through the back of my spiderman suit in a rush to use the toilet, I've made waste evacuation options one of my highest design priorities, right after screen accuracy.

In this case, I'm settling for making the codpiece removable for in-costume restroom necessities. There is no real provision for getting out in a hurry if you need to sit down though. If I were going to be wearing it for long periods of time on a regular basis, I'd work in some sort of quick-release toggle. That way I could run in, yank the ripcord, and let fly. Since I won't get that much use out of the suit, I'll save that bit of engineering for some future project.

True that. I think one of the best designs for this was in a rubies supreme vader, was built in right where ya need it lol

Perhaps you can make a hook and catch system that can be placed on either side of the cod piece, where the pouches are so that the whole thing can un-hinge or come off.

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

The plan is to use snaps and straps to keep everything in place and make kep parts removable as needed.

UPDATE: I've finally got my gauntlets ready for molding. Here's a shot of the tops:
3993762830_38891a4e8f_o.jpg

And the bottoms:

I'm not 100% thrilled with the details, but if I keep tinkering with them I'll never get them done.

In other news, I've started the codpiece mold:

I should be starting the molds for the bicep, tricep, buttplate, and belt pieces this afternoon. Stay tuned...

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

I think the forearm details are pretty close. ALOT better than most I've seen. I know from the 3D model, that even those smaller details get fuzzy and end up open for interpretation

Also, I may have missed it, are you attaching the rest of the details seperatly on the top-front section of the forearms? I noticed it's missing some details

Re: HALO Master Chief Costume Progress Thread

You got some mad talent brother....watching and waiting for the final results
