Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 20APRIL2011 Helmet is 99.9% Done

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 27NOV Helmet painted!!

Well I got something extra for christmas this year...the rest of the armor!

As of right now, the chest piece is a snug fit, but I still gotta grind down the sides a bit. I definatly want to lose some weight before I really get into actually trying to wear it at the momet. I was NOT able to get my helmet with me on the trip down for my leave, but I'm gonna be bringing the visor back up and install it into the helmet.

I did get the "liner," which, was miss-advertised, and turns out to just be the very top pad portion of the helmet and that was it :rolleyes ...so I'm gonna need to get extra padding to actually fill out.

What are you using for a liner? I've used automotive headliner fabric in mine and then added padding between the fabric and the inside of the helmet where I want it thicker.

I had ordered a motorcycle helmet liner off a site. I wanted to get that nice snug fit going on inside the helmet, but keep it professional at the same time.

Crap...I still need to put lights in the helmet.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 01JAN2011: Last of Armor In!

Back in AZ and decided to get back on this thing, sort of. I have the visor in hand and I'm going to have to figure out what I'm gonna do.

The visor I got curtousey of Sean, and it's amazing to have a well produced and accurate visor!

Now onto it. The only thing about the visor is that it's not gonna be 100% flush if I were to install it right away. There is some gaps between it and the helmet. I've managed to get it pretty close, but still a gap. I'm considering doing what sean did to his helmets and bondo/fill the gaps and re-touch up the paint. The only thing is that I need to hold alot of preasure on the visor to get it to sit where I need it to.

So anyways, Here's me holding the visor in place. Gotta be careful thought, the mirrachrome is painted on the inside, and fingerprints can take it off the acrylic!!

I also decided to do a small detail I think looks pretty good; I went out and got some car door rubber trimming to add to the inner edge of the helmet. I didn't get the sides that slant up only because the rubber would have looked kinda "off" and wouldn't bend the way I'd like it to, but I'm happy with it

Oh yea, and here's that "liner." I mean, I can use it, but I need to add foam underneath it and foam all around it. I really was expecting to get the whole sha-bang, but eh...

Stay tuned...

Awesome, and I think you could get away with using the liner, how much and what kind of foam do you need? I've got some foam I was trying to sell in the junkyard but it's not selling, so I could always ship some to you, my treat.

That would be great. I need to fill the top a bit just to get the motorcycle liner in there properly..the way it is right now won't do me any good. I was thinking about lining the inside of the helmet out of normal foam then do a "professional" looking foam over the filler foam.

Anyways, I decided to do some quick grinding and make the trim a completed portion.

Cool, well, I'm sending a PM with a link to pictures of the foam so you can let me know if it's the right stuff.

/\ I agree, now lets see a picture of the armor on you a bit unless you had to leave it back here in FL, As far as the foam, consider it sent, I mean it isn't sent right this second, but I'll be sending it by next Friday hopefully.

Bah most of it is still back in Florida. I have all the lower body pieces here, bit nothing is really assembled. The only real thing that I can "put on" is one of the shins lol

haha, I figured as much, guess I'll just have to wait until you get back.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 05JAN2011: Getting ready to put that visor in!

Gah! I want to get this visor installed this weekend, but I'm not sure what material to use to hold it in. I'm thinking of using some of the two part epoxy to make like holding points to grab the edges. The thing is that the surface is too smooth for adhesives to grab onto, so I need to use the edges.

I think I'll take a look around radio shack for some lights too. I really want to finish this thing..

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 05JAN2011: Getting ready to put that visor in!

I would suggest gorilla glue, It holds well to visors, but check out the 450th for better options, as far as lights, I would suggest these:

Also, are you going to do just one side lights up or both, I believe only one side has ever lit up in the game, but I could be wrong, halo 3 ruined Master Chief for me, it's all about Noble 6 now, :D

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 05JAN2011: Getting ready to put that visor in!

Hmm...might be an option. I haven't used gorilla glue in awhile. The only thing I'm worrried is it's expanding qualities, but now a viable option. I'm thinking that if I use it, I'll put the glue on the inside of that polygon shaped piece that sticks out to the sides of the visor area, because the acrylic visor sits really close and tight to that portion. I do have some clamps which may be long enough to assist me on this...

As for the lights, I am trying to steer away from conventional lamp style, because the ones that I have seen have not appeared accurate IMO. Another thing is that it's too clear. I guess I'm getting too picky....

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 05JAN2011: Getting ready to put that visor in!

Actually, looking at the pictures again, I wouldn't suggest it, I though you had more of a lip in places like the snout, but you really don't, that glue needs some surface area, you also don't have enough room for caulking.

Re: Halo 3 Master Chief WIP UPDATE: 05JAN2011: Getting ready to put that visor in!

I typically use epoxy or just casting resin for mine. If you need a better surface to stick to, try drilling some small holes around the outer edge of the visor where they won't be visible. You can also try taking a file or a dremel and just scoring marks into the margins of the visor to eliminate the smoothness.

For some reason I though I'd already cut notches into the edges for you.

Yea, I just figured out why those notches were there :$ It'll work out I think. I'm not gonna try to get every edge with adhesive though.

Hmmmm, I can't remember the drying times for gorilla glue :/
I have a couple clamps which appear to be able to reach far enough for me, so I'll have to get the visor centered first and locked there before I can continue putting more adhesive on.

The side portion that I mentioned in my previous post has a good ammount of surface area that will work to at least get it in place well enough
