Halloween costumes air mag conversion

Finished modding one shoe with EL and new side LEDs. Here are side by side comparisons. This was my first Mag mod, so it involved a lot of learning (rework). Took about 20 hours to get one shoe done. Now to start with the other....

The new ELs look sweet. They only change I'd make is getting some new straps without the stitching. Are you using Mark's decal set? And how did you get the side ribs so flat?

Yes, the decals are from Mark, very nice and high quality rubber decals. I'd recommend them. I flattened the side ribs as much as I could with an iron and damp towel. Still not as flat as I'd like, but better. You're right, it would look better if I bought new leather for the strap. I'll get to that at some point.

How are you powering the EL? Did you rewire the insides and do a 9V rechargeable setup a la the V2's, or did you go a different route?

Ok I only have enough cash do throw at one thing so what do you guys think matters more el soles or el straps? If I el the soles I'd jut have a unlit nike strap but if I el the strap
id leave the LEDs in the soles

did you buy aqua el or green el becuase all the aqua el I look at dosent look like what you have but green el looks like what you have here

US size 10 why do you ask?

I'm still considering my toe mod, and I think size 8's have a blunter toe which could mean more cloth to work with if I went with a sock toe.

I'd actually like to see a US8 steam modded too, not sure whose done that yet.

The sock toe mod was the best thing I've done the shoe feels so much better and looks like a billion times better side note new mods I've done to my shoes is shaped the heel cups to the rounded fatter looking cups like the movie shoe I also dd a new splatter pattern that's more like the movie shoe where it's more consentrated splatters rather then the trailing splatter were all used to seeing on the replicas

I'm still probably gonna steam-mod it first. See how I like that. I'm not going for any particular look, just whatever features I like from the various shoes.

I don't know what I want to do with the heel cup, I might even just paint the letters on.

I need to see what my new pair will look like before I know how I want to deal with the spatter. Especially since there's some talk about midsole color and spatter pattern change at the factory.

Yes, I went with the 9v setup, I followed the V2 directions in my post on that thread.

I went with aqua el. I bought a 5x6 sheet off eBay that came from China. Took almost a month to arrive, but works great!

I assume you are mainly interested in how the unlit EL looks, here are some close ups. Looks a little rougher up close. I definitely learned a lot doing the first one, hopefully the right shoe goes easier. Planning to start on it next week.

After cutting a space for the EL on mine, I started having doubts about how well the stock strap is gonna hold up in the long run. I'm planning on changing mine out if I can find the right vinyl to make a replacement strap. Anybody else going that route? If so, do you have a good resource for the vinyl. I tried several fabric stores locally, but couldn't find a match.

joannes fabric is the closest i could get to the right white its slightly off but its not really noticeable you really can only tell the difference against the tongue because of the different material but im making a new tongue out of the same vinyl so that should fox that problem

how did you pull the sole away at the top did you use a hairdryer?

I checked there, but only found off-white vinyls. They sent me to a local place which had a HUGE selection of fabrics, and I couldn't find a match there either. If I can't find a something close, so be it, but there has to be SOMETHING out there that will work and could be obtained via internet.

I got my white vinyl at Hobby Lobby. $3 or so for half a yard.

I've also heard people mention marine vinyl.

Basically. It wasn't nearly as easy as the videos of the V2s make it look. I used a heat gun on low, specifically this one. Even with that it was incredibly difficult. I wedged a flat head screw driver in there to pull at it with heat applied at the same time. I probably spent 4 hours slowing opening it up. There was some tearing of the sole foam through this process, but minimal enough that it wasn't too noticeable.

I then had to use "Goof Off" (basically acetone) to clean the remaining glue and paint off the clear part of the sole. Be careful though, as that stuff will not only remove the glue and paint but start to melt the clear sole itself. Use as little as possible, it was a necessary evil for me though since the old paint and glue would have covered the EL partially.
