My favorite Half-Life enemy is the hunter. I love the way they look, the sounds they make, how they move, and I love to fight them. Years ago, when I saw the original Stilt-Spirit costumes by Melissa R, I wondered if a Hunter costume could be similarly engineered.

Now that the cosplayer Spiritwalker has made more accessible tutorials for stilt costumes, I’ve decided to start engineering a Hunter Costume loosely based around his designs. In this thread I will be logging my progress, asking for feedback and advice, and hopefully show a finished design one day.

I plan to use EVA foam for most of the costume’s construction, as I’m most experienced with it. Some parts will be painted, others will be wrapped in fabric to represent skin.

A Hunter’s front legs do not bend the way human arms do, so I plan to connect them to the body with “false” arms. My real arms will poke through the sides of the body, and operate the lower legs.

At the moment, I am unsure if this will work perfectly. In my concepts, the front stilts arch, whereas most of Spiritwalker’s designs have straight front legs. This might make them harder to balance on and control. The false arms will also need some kind of internal support so they won't flop around as I move. I’m interested in hearing what others think.

I also still need to pick a size. I could easily fit into the body of a game-accurate 8 foot (2.5 m) costume, but it might be difficult to operate and maneuver. A 6 or 7 foot costume may be more achievable but have a more cramped interior. More details on this in the linked video.

As this costume is very ambitious, and is still in its planning stage, I am open to all criticism and feedback. I hope to get back to you soon with another update.
