Had a double dose of Judge Dredd today -

Gone but not forgotten.
So my son and I sat down today and watched both the Karl Urban version and the Stallone big budget offering. Both me and Jr LOVED the new one - (though I did have to shield him from a couple of scenes, namely when Anderson takes a trip inside the head of the perp) but other than that the movie was a good time. It did begin to feel a little claustrophobic as it went on and I wasn't a fan of how Mega City was handled (in either version) but it's safe to say Urban's Dredd would have Stallone's for breakfast. Not to completely bad mouth the Stallone version - his uniform was more of a literal translation of the comic - as was his bike (Lawmaster - right?) but Urban kept his helmet on which earned him mega-points in my book - and the Robocop violence vs the 94's whacky sidekick light comedy - shows Michael DeLuca's fingerprints. I only hope if there is a sequel Judge Death makes a show .

And if anyone knows where I can score some Slo-mo.... looks like fun.

I was thinking that if Ma-Ma wanted to REALLY make an example out of those guys she would have hit them with the SLO-MO before the skinning, not before the 200 floor drop.

Stallone's Judge Dredd was about Facetime for Stallone. Karl Urban did it five times as cool with just his lips and his voice and most people won't even know who he is. Urban _IS_Dredd.

Man, since the Urban version just came out on Blu-Ray and DVD, I have been to the rental store every night to see if it's in and it never is. I am dying to watch this movie!

I've never seen the original Stallone vehicle. Should I subject myself to that one just to see what the fuss is all about before watching the new one? Or should I just pretend it doesn't exist and watch only the new one (which is, by all accounts I've seen, far superior).

The Stallone movie isn't a bad film. It's just more of an action comedy and from what I've heard, only visually true to the comics in terms of outfit. It's not a fantastic movie... but you don't need to gouge your eyes out after seeing it.

REDBOX! Just go to the website and do the rental online, so a copy's held for you at the kiosk! ;)

Oh... wait... you're in Japan? Well, in that case, JUST BUY IT! 'Cuz I have no clue if you have anything like a Redbox over there.

It's worth a look for the ABC robot alone;)

I always loved the props and costumes from the original 1995 version admit the side kick and helmet were annoying but still wortha look for the props :)

I almost mentioned that I believed the only reason Stallone's Judge Dredd is remembered at all by Sci-Fi nerds is the ABC Robot and they liked the Judge pistol, whatever it's called.

No ABC in DREDD, but no Deuce Bigelow either. I'll make that trade any day of the week. The gun is cooler in this DREDD also, IMHO.

I believe the first one might have actually kept viewers away expecting a remake of a lame Stallone film not a reboot of a worthy concept.

From what I've read around the 'net, that's exactly what happened.

As is typical with most adaptations, people don't realize when something is actually based on a book or comic or whatever.

Granted, I'm not familiar at all with the Judge Dredd comics, but I do know they exist, and I'm going into these two films already knowing that one is a more accurate translation than the other.

I rented it the other day and my GF asked if it was a sequal of the Stallone movie and I told her no it's supposed to be more like the comics. This one was a bit more bleak. I liked this Dredd. He was by the book and strict but he wasn't all that coldhearted either. A second Dredd would be nice. Seeing more of the city would be cool. Seeing the ABC droids would bump it up too. Glad this version kept his helmet on too. I like Rob Schneider but not in Judge Dredd. The comedy really took away from the movie, IMHO. I'm sure it was to get the kids in to see it. Judge Dredd wasn't a BAD movie I just liked this one better.

Hearing Sly say "I AM DA LAW!" was alone worth the price of admission for me.

The new Dredd is five thousand times better than the original IMO, and I liked the original (while realising it wasn't a great movie). The one thing that stood out for me was the Dredd outfit - I love the military style armour Urban wears, and specifically, I think his helmet looks much better than the helmet from the Stallone version.

We just watched Dredd last night and I absolutely loved it. We'll definitely be picking it up on bluray and I would be highly disappointed if we don't get any sequels.

Okay, I sat down and did the double-shot today.

The 1995 film was entertaining in its way.. it reminded me a lot of Demolition Man, and seemed pretty much like other films of the era. I do think it's funny that the only thing that people manage to take away from that film is "I AMB DA LAW!!".. sounds like a caption for a lolcat.

As a film, I definitely agree that the 2012 version is far superior. It... moves better. It felt like a pounding drum, deliberate and punchy with the action, but quiet and slow in between beats. And a much more straightforward version of Dredd himself, without all of the backstory and drama that the 1995 film tried (and failed) to give us.

The 1995 film is a good example of how a straight adaptation of a comic book uniform just doesn't work. Running around with big gold bars on your shoulders? Sure thing, bub. The 2012 film at least looks like a working tactical uniform. Ammo pouches, first aid kit, body armor, etc. Not real keen on the new helmet, though.. the big "X" in the middle kind of throws it off. Realistically, that's got to obstruct his vision. I think it would have looked better if they'd lopped off the bottom of the "X" and just allowed for more glass.

You know what I liked about DREDD? Well, ONE of a great many things, actually. The LE aspect of his job. His interaction with that homeless guy. It's a petty misdemeanor and he's not a real hardass about it. But when he comes back and he hasn't been cooperated with the iron comes back into his voice. And five seconds later we find out the reason for the law and why Dredd will only put up with so much pushback. Because there IS a reason for the laws.

Just a small moment, but it felt like the serious but simultaneously absurd nature of law enforcement to me. Saving people from their own stupidity whether they like it or not. A small bit of the movie, but one that felt right.

The Stallone movie wasn't bad for what it was: a Stallone movie of the 1990s just like Demolition Man. The new one looks good and i hope it does good enough for a sequel.

I'm hoping the DVD/Blu-ray sales are good. I've been to 3 best buys this past week for various reasons, and I noticed that the Dredd blu-rays were sold out at two of them, and they only had a few dvd copies still on the shelves. Either they're selling like hotcakes, of the studio/distributor isn't sending out enough copies to stores...
