Not sure where you got the info about the original pieces being "Gold" but it's inaccurate.
Del Toro himself said on the movies interview that they couldn't afford gold so they were cast in silver and gold plated.
I have several behind the scenes pictures of them being plated as well.
Also, the thing about the drawing is that it's supposed to be the alchemists beginning design, sort of a concept sketch. The details of it are, for the most part, not present on the actual device.
The dial doesn't have two heads, the needle is not wavy and over-all there really is much more detail than what shows up on the actual piece.
I wasn't aware he had had nine made up after the fact. In the interview I saw he said he had yet to have any duplicates made...guess he finally got around to it.
