Not sure where you got the info about the original pieces being "Gold" but it's inaccurate.
Del Toro himself said on the movies interview that they couldn't afford gold so they were cast in silver and gold plated.
I have several behind the scenes pictures of them being plated as well.

Also, the thing about the drawing is that it's supposed to be the alchemists beginning design, sort of a concept sketch. The details of it are, for the most part, not present on the actual device.
The dial doesn't have two heads, the needle is not wavy and over-all there really is much more detail than what shows up on the actual piece.

I wasn't aware he had had nine made up after the fact. In the interview I saw he said he had yet to have any duplicates made...guess he finally got around to it.

Ah, OK. I read online that they were gold and melted down, but I guess you shouldn't believe everything you read online. :lol

I agree with you that the wavy needle and the double snakeshead on the drawing aren't present on the actual prop, but I'd say that the rest of the images and details definitely are there on the finished article.

If you compare the drawing and the hi-def image of the prop:

You can clearly see the "horned lizard/toads" with the long tongues and taloned feet beneath the crystal. The jeweller did not sculpt these on the replica. You can also see the long feet (with talons) that curve in from each side below the "lizards" that are missing from the replica.

The long tongued "horned lizards" above the crystal, either side of snake dial, can also be seen on the finished prop. A lot of the detail for these, for example the taloned feet, is missing from the replica.

Please don't get me wrong, your replica is awesome. It's just that I noticed this stuff when I can drawing it out and looking for get reference images.

The nice thing about having actual molds for the piece is that I can now inject waxes and pull pieces that can be detailed. Pretty sure I mentioned that I already have a leg sculpted.

Del Toro had 9 exact replicas made that he has in his possession. Apparently, if he meets anyone he wants to live forever, he gives them one. Harry Knowles (AICN.com) has one.

In retrospect I must say that this decision didn't age well. :unsure
That being said that's an awesome replica from an awesome and bloody underrated movie.
I really hope someone will pick this up as I would love one to add to my collection (with the added bonus of living forever of course).
