Gremlins Bathroom Buddy

So are we assuming it was carved in wood as a master and then cast in wood colored resin?

Awesome pic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting.

Not to sound greedy,.......but more:p:p:p:p:p:p
I’m not entirely sure how it was done. It looks like it was carved out of the resin… if that was possible back then. Unfortunately the guy who made it is long gone.

I always assumed it was wood too. Once I got my hands on it I knew it was NOT wood. It was alot lighter way back when. Over the years it got darker. I assume from Joe handling it... oils... sunlight.. all that stuff.

The toothbrush says "PRO"

Thank you for that! And there you go lonepigeon you were right!

anchoredprops I am still surprised at how small the Bathroom Buddy is... The size makes sense as a practical invention, but when I first started mocking up the body (years ago now, before we could pour over your beauty shots), I had it a good 30% larger.

Jamesfett I think I am going to concentrate on a cad-designed body with the routes and channels pre-cut that can then be SLS printed. That becomes the master that can be molded and cast in solid resin, and then these casts can be hand-worked, drill the holes for the tool pins and hinges, that kind of stuff. I can sculpt the hand-carved/rounded edges into the 3d model, or the resin casts can be hand-worked with a dremel.

At least a couple are going to be in wood, as I already have a shop working on THOSE prototypes. You know from way back when we thought it was made of wood :lol::lol:

One of the most fun parts about this place is that your individual adventures often kick off a re-watch to see the item in use!

Never hurts to have a Gremlin's re-watch!

Sounds like a solid plan :). I actually have to thank you and this thread. The original BB was missing the metal floss piece. I was googling around and managed to find all your work on the replica and purchased a vintage Johnson and Johnson floss dispenser and was able to complete the prop :).

What is the "grain" on the body. If it's not wood, is it the natural texture of the resin, or did they apply a brushed/scratched surface finish to it?

Looks like resin with sanding marks on it.
Exactly. Little scratches in the surface, looks like it was sanded. The carved into areas where the different toiletries fit into look smooth and a lighter more “original” tan color. Btw not sure what those little marks are on underside of the mirror. But you can spot them on screen in me wings shop early on in the movie. As well as rhe matcching zebra (?) pattern.

So wood for the prop, carved to look like he made it himself, then cast in resin?????

My brain is melted so I can't remember if this has been suggested.

Or the sand marks are just from the process of shaping the resin.
This is my thinking as well. It makes sense to me that the prop dept. might have used a block of Ren Shape, it’s basically a block of resin which has no bubbles and is the same density throughout. Ren Shape is machinable, and would easily look like wood after sanding, discoloration due to age is also right in line with that train of thought.

Okay my 1/1 Gizmo is on the way from Sideshow.

I got lots of personal hygiene and grooming equipment.

How are the Buddy bodies coming?

Thanks

Tom
I had to take a hiatus due to some Health concerns, but hope to be back into the swing of things by the 20th.

I have the NECA Gizmo, not nearly as nice as the Sideshow but he was cheap (and he sings)

Any thoughts on display ideas for the Buddy?

Okay, well I guess your health is more important than my prop.

One displayed open, and one with everything closed.

Maybe cellphone holder for display.

Kind of what I was thinking. I would like to be able to display mine in a way that it can be put out opened or closed, and I like the clear acrylic look. I also like the idea of a Peltzer-branded display base that the Buddy can just sit atop with an option of slowly turn-tabling :)

Quick update! I have a lot going on right now, but I should have a custom order of orange buttons, black buttons with correct domes, correct Clive branded dental mirrors, and prophy brushes (mystery pink tool) showing up this week. I also have a set of translucent Vistron toothbrushes (new old stock) arriving this week too; they are correct save for the base color, but I think I can dye the handles to get the accurate red finish. I'll post updates as I get this stuff in.

A few other things:

-If anyone can source 22mm round mirrors, I could be in the market for maybe 20. There's an ebay seller in India, but his look to have a lot of edge chips. I also have a bunch of metal-handle mirrors with correct glass, but getting the glass out is not easy;still experimenting lol

-Next up to order are those uniquely shaped vanity mirrors, I will have 20 cut (minimum order) so should have extras.

-I've got a decent collection of almost correct vintage Revlon clippers now, but many have either the stamped 'R' or cursive Revlon script on the handle. I'd love to find a few more without engraving. I'm willing to buy, or can barter other Buddy parts possibly.

-Not until next week, but I have a custom die coming to stamp replica floss dispensers. Probably overkill but I have been paying $12+ each for originals, so I thought I'd give this a shot. The new die is worked up to produce the replicas in .012" stainless steel. I really hope they work out well, But if not, at least, I'll get some use out of my dusty 6 ton press and some experience stamping for future projects.

- Did we ever confirm the comb make and model? I thought the ace 88 was considered to be pretty much it, but thought I'd check.

That's all for now, looking forward to getting this custom order in! Just those mirror handles has been a long revising process to say the least.
