I am blown away by the leather effect you have achieved there, very well done!!

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Agreeing 110% with everyone else here. All of your hard work definitely shines through, and doesn't go unnoticed!! I'm a huge fan of leather, as it's my side gig and you have seriously set the standard for texture, my friend. I can't wait to see ho much of your detail transfers to the first pull. I'm already wanting one of these for myself. :cool

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Thanks guys!

Fett, that leather texture caused me a lot of grief, trying to figure out how to do it right. I finally found a website with a nice tutorial on how to achieve skin textures. Basically, it's a combination of small rakes, wire brushes and a cat brush, then used brushed on baby powder, mineral spirits and/or alcohol to soften it. It took a lot of trial and error before I got the different looks I was after. I'm glad ya'll like it.

Propazoid, I will definitely be offering pulls in the junkyard after it's molded. I'm hoping that'll be in the next couple of weeks.

do you have a link to that tutorial?

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Wow, I really appreciate the compliments---thanks! I should be able to order the ultracal in the next couple of days, so it won't be too much longer . . . :D

Kommisar, I had intended to post a link last time and forgot. Here you go:

It's pretty long, with lots of pix, but well worth the time to read it.:thumbsup

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about Tom!

You had your mind set to what you wanted to sculpt and you kept at it until the textures fit what you envisioned.

Good work 'cause that looks great!

(y)thumbsup

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

I think you summed it up well, Rob---thanks for the compliment!

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

LOVED the Gotham by Gaslight book.

You are killing it on this project man! Those pics are insanely cool.

Great work. :)

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

I think I peed a little when I saw that, impressive sir!

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

What a fantastic sculp.

The stitching around the face, and the texturing is absolutely amazing.

Anyone who is a bat fan needs one of these from your run!

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Thanks guys!

Ultracal has been ordered, so I should be able to get this molded in a week or so. Can't wait!:D

hellome, the basic process starts with the sculpt, like this one. Since I'm doing the cowl in latex, I'll make a two piece ultracal (hard form of plaster of paris) mold from the sculpt. After removing the mold from the sculpt, I'll put the two halves together (securing with bungees or duct tape). Then I'll slush a few coats of latex into it, and let it dry over night. Open the mold, and there's a latex cowl waiting to be trimmed and painted. That's a simplified explanation, but it covers the basics.

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Very excellent detail, dude! I've always loved the Gotham by Gaslight version of the Dark Knight!

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FINISHED SCULPT

Thank you for the information. I was always wondering how people did that.

Re: Gotham by Gaslight Cowl FIRST PULL

I finally have the first pull! I got it trimmed, cleaned up and Plasti-Dipped---I have to say, I'm pretty damn pleased with it:

The texture came out better than I'd hoped. Besides doing these in solid black, I'm going to try adding a little color to it to match the comic. I'll leave the face area black, but give the main body a coat of translucent blue and give the large stitches a touch of brown. I'll post some more pix when that's done, and also a few of me wearing it with a gray shirt and black overcoat to get an idea of how it should look.
