Goonies question: The Octopus lie

In the end when the kids try to explain for their parent about the adventures they just had, Data just seems to totally lie when he starts talking about the Octopus that they "encounted"

Sure I know its a deleted scene that features the octopus and Data saves the day by stuffing the beak with his tape player. But because it was never included in the movie I thought as a child that Data for some reason just made it up.. But why? he was not the lier type , Chunk was.

What did you think about this when you saw the movie and did not know about the deleted scene?

It bugged me for years..

I could have sworn the octopus was visible, but not for as long as intended. It's been forever since I've watched Goonies, but I have a vague memory of someone pointing it out in the corner of the screen, just a few legs sticking out of the water. I knew it was part of a deleted scene, but I've always been under the impression that they needed some of the footage where it was still visible.

I caught it on TV once and it was strange. Although, I guess I was already prepared for it because there was an octopus in the old Commodore 64 Goonies game. You're right, it would have made more sense for Chunk to have said it since it was a deleted scene.

I seem to have a knack for catching stuff like this.

I know, that I saw that scene as a kid. I remember watching the movie again, and not seeing it, and then thinking maybe it was a different movie and that I just got them mixed up or something.

Also happened with Phantom Menace. Went to see it opening day at this brand new "super" theater. Saw like, all of the deleted scenes right there, in the theater in the film. Then, upon seeing it again, wondered where half the stuff I remembered went.

People also remember seeing Biggs and Luke on Tatooine, or the shark leaping out of the water to grab the chopper in JAWS 2, yet neither were in any cut [made public].

Now, I love The Goonies, but even I wouldn't call it a lie -- I'd call it an editing faux pas.

I always chalked it up to youthful exaggeration and didn't know anything about an actual octopus scene being filmed until the DVD release.

This sceen is a 100% real. The disney channel use to show the goonies and the octopus scene is included. It starts out with an octopus leg touching steffs butt and she yells at mouth to stop. Then it happens again and she slaps mouth for it. Then the octopus pops up and attacks everyone and data turns a song on his walkman and shoves it in the octopus' mouth and it sort of dances away. It's totally real and I've seen it several times.

could have sworn that i put this link in my original post :confused oh well here it is again..YouTube - The Goonies-Deleted Octopus Scene

Yeah, nobody is debating it isn't real.

****, I even knew that as a kid -- I had the trading card, after all!

Before I knew about the deleted Octopus scene I always got a good chuckle when Data mentioned it, I never interpreted it as a lie, just him as a kid deciding to exaggerate the adventure and playing to the reporters' gullibility. The other kids jumping on the bandwagon with him reinforced it, I always thought that was hilariously funny!

I think this was in the movie at some point before. I don't own the dvd and never owned a version of this but I remember seeing it as a kid after watching the YT clip. I didn't know it was deleted but I have seen it before as a part of the movie.

Danish television had a nag with showing alternate versions of movies. Also aired Superman the Movie with even more scenes than there are in the extended dvd released some years ago...

Same with Superman 2. There are scenes still missing in both the Lester cut and the new Donner cut that was shown in the tv aired version.

Also caught The Terminator with nearly all the deleted scenes as part of the movie. Got mad at Danish tv and when I bought the dvd when those scenes were not included in the movie, but left as deleted scenes.

And Danish tv aired Last Crusade with the "Jew" comment about the treasure the German's offered the prince in exchange to cross his lands.

I HATE later edited versions. But also dislike extended versions where the added material is a waste of time and does nothing for the story, like the Star Wars SE's.

Thanks Contec for the utube link!!!
I have never seen the deleted scene untill this very moment wow!!
Glad they deleted this from the movie...
But i still love this movie and hope they make a Goonies 2...
